My name is David Boles. Black Bart was Alvy Boles. My great great grandfather. He is buried in the Old Placerville Cemetary. You can find his headstone on Find a Grave.

There is a Black Bart Rd. just off of Forbstown Rd. about 12 miles due East of Oroville Ca. There is a moment along side of the road that depicts the sight of a Stage Coach robbery that was caused by Black Bart who escaped the area after hiding the loot for a later pickup. The old Olive Highway ( Hwy. 162) is said to be the rout that he traversed and hid the loot on his way to Oroville and the river boat back to San Francisco. This old roadway is at the bottom of my property and the area that was used as a stage coach station. I have a pile of large (Car Sized ) boulders on my place and have always fantasized that Black Bart may have hid his loot in one of the crevasses in this large pile of boulders but so far no joy.

This was a very enlightening show. I had no idea that he might have disappeared to Marysville Ca! Wow! I live in Calaveras County and have visited the San Andreas museum where he was tried. The down stairs jail is very haunted for sure! I went into the actual jail cells just to experience the full feel of history. Soon after that, I personally experienced a ghost that followed me back home that was playing around with my kitchen cabinet doors and lights at night just last month in March. Fantastic museum however! I wonder if you guys would ever do a ghost history episode of the gold rush areas? There is lots of paranormal activity here in Calaveras County and Amador county.

Excellent presentation! Two things that should be added; One of the things that made him disappear after each robbery, was his ability to walk 50 to 70 miles with out a horse. His physical shape in the robbery days was a plus. Second, was he was never caught after any of the robbery’s. The Wells Fargo Agent in charge of investigation track him down by the laundry mark on the handkerchief he left at the strong box location after a robbery. His poetry manor was known though this handkerchief. Also on a side note that when he would return to San Francisco his MO was he was a Mining Engineer returning from a. Routine inspection, thus the dirty clothes going to the laundry.

Nice tour! I've seen his headstone, and others from the Donner party pioneers in this cemetery. I believe it is Black Bart. Regardless, growing up, my long gone neighbor Effie Sinclair told the story of back in the day when Black Bart was on the lamb, he was fed by her mom a hugh meal and the outlaw was a Very nice mannered fellow! (I lived in Roseville, outside of Sacramento.) I'm paraphrasing but Bart's supper consisted of a dozen eggs, #of bacon, and a loaf of bread. He ate a Humungous meal and her family was happy to serve him!

I am somewhat skeptical myself but it's a possibility. I totally disagree with their decision to legitimize the theory by placing a grave marker on Charles Wells' grave that declares him the same as Black Bart. That has not proven by any forensic science, only conjecture based on stories repeated from people long since dead.

There are also stories, and a legend, that he buried money somewhere in Southern Lake County near Cobb Mountain. He had told a friend or two where to look, because he said he was too decrepit to find the spot. It was supposedly never located in a mapped out area between Middletown and a hot spring near the mountain where he had lodged.

Very nicely done video, I know that I am doing catch-ups, on viewing some of you're videos, however, in view of this video, it seems to me, that the gold from the Well's Fargo Stagecoaches, he robbed, could be the gold, that was found, near or around, San Francisco, in 2013, in 18 cans, we know, that it could not have been Jesse James, he died, in 1882. They say these coins were minted between 1847 -1894 In my mind, this would fit, the time line of Black Bart.

Going from San Andreas to Mt. Ranch on Mt. Ranch Road there is a marker, at least there used to be, claiming that Black Bart robbed a stagecoach there.

@@jbenziggy If you do it's on righthand side of the road. There is a pull off spot. But be careful. If people drive that road like they used to...... Almost forgot. You also do a movie location series. I don't remember the name of the movie but a scene from it was shot in Mt. Ranch. next Senders Market in the old buildings there. Believe it was a Clint Eastwood film. There is also an historic cemetery there. My sister-in-law Sally Hiner is buried there. She passed in 2005.

Ok I'm a Maryaville resident for 30+ years. I'm a bit embarrassed that our historical society doesn't know that they're is NO 10 MILE HOUSE! It's 7 mile house on highway 20 past hallwood. And 6 mile house going out hwy 65 towards Orovile. Jeez. And yes if you exumed Charles Wells remains there would be enuf DNA to test. Not that it means anything but my daddy's name is Richard Charles Wells his daddy was Charles Wells as was his father before him.

According to the book about black Bart he was suspected of trying to do a stage near Virginia city NV when the guard leveled his double barrel 10 ga on the robber and cut him down. Later the guard and sheriff went to the site and drug a hasty grave and kicked in the robber. Nothing was ever heard of black Bart again. Seems like they finally got their man. Nobody ever came to ID the body so it's said it's still there.

Only the DNA results will provide clarity to the question is Charles Wells, Black Bart. I hope that you have sent a few letters to his descendants about the possibilities. As an avid genealogist, researcher, and the family keeper of the crap (family history) I’d certainly like to know if I were them.

Intriguing but not necessarily convincing. It very well could be him buried there, and considering how he liked to mess with his identity and with WF his whole life, it’s actually likely he’s buried there. The way records seem to have been kept during the time of his death, someone could have absconded with any leftover cash and gave him the $12.00 burial, or he could have hidden it as the legend states, found by someone remodeling his house at some point, or never to be found, or not even to have existed. Intriguing, interesting, plausible, just not convincing. Great mystery-history.

Yeah I am not convinced but it’s possible! It’s weird Boles disappeared. Maybe he fell victim to foul play or committed suicide. Or maybe he really became Charles Wells! The world may never know!

I can see him changing identities again and maybe even creating more mischief or just settling down to a normal under-the-radar life. Not suicide though. He would almost be admitting defeat and that “they” won if he did that. He leaves a great story behind this way. Just his style. Thanks for the reply.
