I used to have breakfast with Melvin Belli at a little restaurant on Jackson Square, San Francisco around the corner from his law practice. I last saw him at Clown Allen near Jackson Square he was being sued by his associates and thought I was a process server, and then he remembered me. Fond memories. Thank you for the video ... well done.

When I was 19 yrs old I saw Belli interviewed on a television show. I had already read several books and articles about him and found him fascinating. The television interviewer in my opinion did a horrible job, got facts about his life wrong, and totally dropped the ball. Belli remained gracious to her throughout. I was so annoyed by the stupid interviewer that I went down to the hotel Belli was staying at and left a note apologizing for her performance. A week or two later I received an airmail letter from Belli in which he thanked me for my note and invited me to San Francisco to fire off the cannon on his roof. All these years later I have assumed he was being apocryphal, but found out later that there really was a cannon. Loved your video!

Melven Belli and Danny Jones wrote at least two books, one, Law in Japan and or China. Danny was a best friend of my stepnfather, a chief of detectives in Compton, California. He inherited that cannon when Danny died. He was a pilot in world WW2. Dec.12 he turned 99 years old. He is still alive, in Arizona.

My dad was an attorney in Modesto and knew Belli. When I was a kid we visited Belli at his big Victorian house in San Francisco. He still had an old timey phone with no dial and the earpiece hung on the side of the phone. Much like the phones on the Andy Griffith show. He also had TV with one of the first remotes I had ever seen. I must have clicked through the channels for an hour just playing with it.

The William John Hales that you mention in this video of the Sonora Cemetery was not the owner of the lumber company in Sonora. George Webb Hale was in the lumber business and he died September 18, 1915 in Sonora and is interred in the Columbia City Cemetery in Columbia, CA along with his wife and two young sons. His wife was Ida Josephine Spier and her family arrived in Columbia by 1852. Her father Jospeph Spier was a founder of the Tuolumne Water Company along with Andrew Fletcher, Dr. Windler and John Jolly. Spier also built a flour mill in Columbia. He and two other men discovered the pass through the Sierras now know as the Sonora Pass. He was also know for his skills as painter, painting the scenes that are still in the Masonic Temple in Columbia. He, his wife and son, Charles Spier later moved to Visalia, California and established a nursery. He and his wife died and are buried in the Visalia Cemetery. There are no markers on their graves.

I moved to San Francisco from Springfield MA in 1969 at age 19. I've only been to the Sonora area one time in 1972, with a college friend who grew up there. Even the brief shots of town here blow my mind. That the local cemetery has so many old headstones is even more mind blowing. In 1972, Sonora barely qualified to be called a town because it was so small. As we first rolled into town, I saw a sign that said: "Stop at the stop light ahead." I told my friend that the way the sign was worded suggested that this was the only stop light in town. My friend laughed and told me that was exactly correct. This was the only stop light in all of Tuolumne County. As we drove around the area that day, I saw nothing to contradict that. We visited his mother in Columbia which even had less reason to be called a "town" IMO. It was a glorified intersection of country roads. I'm saying none of this to speak badly of Tuolumne County. It would be a great place to live, even in 1972. It's just that the local cemetery has so many people buried there who had achieved such status locally that there is no way that I can square it with my 1972 visit. Even looking at Google Maps today tells me that Sonora is much better developed today than 1972. Perhaps Sonora became depopulated during the early 20th Century, and then revived later. That's the only sense that I can make of it. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

My college friend from Sonora was a stable connection on campus for some great marijuana which he called "Colombian". Naturally, all of us at Univ of San Francisco thought that he was talking about weed from the country of Colombia. It was only on my trip to Sonora with him that day that I learned that he called this dynamite weed "Colombian" because it was grown near the secluded town of Columbia CA. It was great weed, wherever it was grown. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

I met Melvin Belli back sometime in the early 1980s. I was a Deputy Sheriff when he walked up to me outside the county jail where his client was being held. We spoke briefly. He seemed pretty arrogant. As I recall his client was involved with the Tylenol poisonings that were a huge problem during that period. He claimed his client, the main suspect, was innocent. He was guilty as hell. Belli had a very colorful personal history...

@@jbenziggy I had lots of fun as kid at Sonora & Columbia Elementary schools & Sonora Union High School. I loved school & participated in their Choirs, all Bands ( Pep Band, Marching Band, Concert Band etc), Sports, Creative Writing & other activities. The only things I hated about school was having to wear dresses (they change the dress code until my Jr. Year) & the fact that girls weren't allowed in some of the classes I wanted to take like auto shop, mechanical drawing, architecture, FFA & playing fast pitch baseball, etc. I was definitely a Tom Boy but still a girl since I could walk lol. I even played tackle football with the guys after school & could ride, shoot & fight with the best of them. I was an only child who had boy cousins that always messed with me trying to make me cry lol. I learned early lol. I've also climbed every rock & tree in Columbia when I was a kid lol. Those were the good old days lol. I wish you could do an in-depth series on the history of Columbia & Sonora. Their history was so intriguing & I think that's what started my love of history when I was a kid, through even today. Keep up the good work, you guys do great history videos. Thank you for all of your hard work. Sincerely, Terri-Beth Reed

I'm really enjoying your videos. I lived in that area during the 60's but took things for granted as far as the history of the Mother Lode. History is right in front of your nose but we tend to forget that because we are so caught up in ourselves. My family moved to Mississippi due to the death of my father. I'm a teacher of American History. We tend to teach a according to state standards and forget the progression that its starts on a local level. History effects all of us, starting with our family, to our communities in which we live, and so forth to the World. I have a great love of our local history here but I'm still fascinated with the History of California and the West. Continue to produce great videos.

Love your comment! Yes, we do a horrible job in our schools of teaching history. It literally is the story of how we came to be. All of our ancestors had a contribution in our genetic makeup, of how our streets and towns developed and so many other things! I'm working on more videos as long as people can appreciate them! Thanks for watching and I do hope you have or will subscribe!
