Michael Landon Letter on Dan Blocker & Exposing Real v. Fake Autographs

Jeff shares how he received a letter from Michael Landon revealing his thoughts of his deceased friend and Bonanza co-star Dan Blocker. That letter and later an encounter with Landon in December 1984 taught him things about his real signature and about the flood of secretarial signatures which have flooded the autograph market.
Jeff was recount how his baby son had an encounter with Jennifer Landon at the filming location of "Highway to Heaven."

That last pic you had of him in the car, you thought was maybe his last, he looked really thin and not well. I think if a fan writes to a celebrity, they should expect an authentic signature. Jeff, I met Pernell Roberts in 2006 and he indicated to me that he felt he was more of a close friend to Dan Blocker. I think it is very sad that people take advantage of people's ignorance on people's signatures. I used to collect baseball signatures years ago as a boy and when I saw some of them at shows later on I know what you're talkin about; I knew they were fake. Especially when I actually like you did talk to the people and they actually signed them in front of me. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and I did like Michael Landon but I will tell you that Pernell Roberts was a real Class Act, when he came to my home when I lived in Dearborn, MI to see my mom. He did not go inside because my mother had just had cancer surgery and he was afraid he would tire her out. Both actors were a Class Act and I really thought people like Pernell Roberts really was Adam.

@@jbenziggy when I was visiting the Henry Ford Estate where I used to work my friends had allowed me to have lunch for free. They had paid for my lunch because they knew my mom was so sick I wasn't eating. So I met Pernell Roberts at the Henry Ford Estate with his friend who actually was a writer for Have Gun Will Travel which I found out after he died. So I told him how sick my mother was which I did not know Mister Roberts was also sick from cancer. So when I told him how bad my mom was, and was a fan he asked for my address and he found my home and came to the home. Now the one thing I think is interesting Jeff is that Mister Roberts did not tell me he hated Bonanza. He really enjoyed Bonanza he told me and he stated to me that he missed it along with Dan Blocker. He also stated to me that he enjoyed Westerns so maybe that was a comment he made many years ago but his attitude towards Bonanza changed very drastically. He also indicated to me that he was not real friendly with Michael Landon I don't know what the problem was and I didn't ask.

Really good piece Jeff. Enjoyed it very much. Years ago I wrote to Mr. Landon right after he started his production company about a story that I thought may be in his wheelhouse. A well known hobo at the time by the name of "Peg Leg Locke" spent a portion of the year here in Paducah, KY, and most of the time could be found in the rail yards close to my home. Peg Leg was a colorful person with great local interest and always lived year round outside in a large cardboard box near the tracks. So by contacting Mr. Landon I thought that he may want to film a story here. Several weeks later I received the signed form letter that you showed thanking me and that was it. Never heard anything more. . .

Although I did not watch Little House or Highway to Heaven at the time, I have grown to like them in syndication. Also his before Bonanza credits are noteworthy - Cheyene, The Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive, GE Theatre , etc. His movies were entertaining as well. He was the albino in "God;s Little Acre" (classic watch) and Teenage Werewolf (which also starred Guy Williams as the cop). His Tonight show appearances can be found on KZread. He was also on Hollywood Squares and sang on Dean Martin & Hullaballo ! Finally, his made for TV movies were also enjoyable - "Where Pigeons Go to Die" w/ Art Carney and "Sam's Son" w/ Eli Wallach. They put out an album of Bonanza songs - one actually has the lyrics to the Bonanza theme!.......

Hot cup coffee and a rainy California morning with Jeff about one of my favorite actors. I was a fan of Bonanza and Little House. I visited Laura Ingals house in Missouri in 2009. I didnt know about all the local areas where Michael was filming in. I would visit Tulloch Lake and La Grange growing up in Waterford. My father remarked one day he saw Michael Landon "Little Joe" going through Oakdale one day. Great video Jeff.

Jeff, thanks again for another unique and interesting production. Like many things this is an example of buyer beware. You have educated yourself as others should. I am a fan of Michael Landon’s work. I have a lot of respect for him. I experienced sadness when he was sick and dying. It’s a strange thing to feel like that about someone I never met. I doubt I would have enjoyed being in his company because his personality was so different from those I’m comfortable around. I don’t like to be around smokers, pranksters or narcissistic people and he seems to have been all of those. Thanks again, keep up the great work. I look forward to the next one!

I have always enjoyed watching Michael Landon and still watch him every morning when I get home from work. I work nights, get off at 0600 and if I go straight home I catch the last half of Dr. Quinn medicine Woman and then an hour or so of Little House. Then I flip the channel over to watch a couple of episodes of Touched by an Angel. It doesn't get much better than that in my opinion. And I have always enjoyed watching anything Michael Landon did and always will. Glad you got to meet him. I have never been an autograph collector, but last month I just had to send Carol Burnett a birthday card and letter. She really is the Queen of Comedy and a pioneer for Female comics and in my opinion she never really got the recognition she deserved for that. I asked for a photo print and possibly a autograph to pass onto my granddaughter. She is very young but when she starts to come visit and stay weekends with her Grandma, I plan on introducing her to Carol Burnetts comedy, it's hysterical, clean and wholesome. I don't know if I'll be sent anything, but I did send her publicist a letter requesting it along with an self addressed envelope for a return photo in addition to sending $5.00 for any additional postage if needed.

Really informative video. I collect exclusively Richard Hatch signatures (Battlestar Galactica) and like you, can now spot a fake instantly. Unfortunately there are heaps of fakes out there featuring his signature as well (Although his is are lot more common and still relatively affordable). Started to become an issue after he died in 2017. I loved the photos you showed. Richard was never too busy for his fans and signed thousands of autographs.

3:59 ML/em at the bottom of your letter--'em' represents the initials of the secretary who typed your letter. It is lovely that he signed it...the mistake in the typeface--that letter 't'!--takes me back to the days (1975!) when the 'X' key on the new-fangled IBM Selectric typewriters was GOLDEN, and added hundreds of dollars to the price of that time-saving machine.

I was a huge fan of Michael Landon, there are a lot of actors who don’t like to sign their autographs. Brought to mind: around late 50s & 1960 (the only time I liked Mr. Landon’s shows), every good-looking guy with nice hair (Landon, The Virginian, Lee Majors character, etc) had to go through some kind of physical wounding/torture-before surviving and prevailing. Ugh! It turned me off those kinds of shows very early on in TV history. Thank you, Jeff, for asking!!!! Love these Sunday morning adventures.

At the time it was rumored that he had died of a heart attack. In either case, it was such a tragic lost. I also remember how heartbroken I was when Michael Landon died. I love all the autographs and pictures that you have collected. I also like that you did extensive research regarding the authentic vs. the fake autographs. If it's not the real deal why bother? Hello Jeff, greetings from Hong Kong. I have just now come across your video which I find most interesting and informative. I would like to share that I watched a lot of US TV shows, including Bonanza, while growing up. I wrote to Michael Landon and received a picture postcard of the Bonanza stars, minus Pernell Roberts. This was after PR had left the show. Over the years, I wrote to many stars and was lucky enough to have received personal letters (some handwritten) and personally autographed pictures from most of them. They are among my most prized memorabilia. You were very lucky to have met ML. I also enjoyed watching LHOP and Highway to Heaven. I now watch Bonanza on KZread and I must say that I also enjoy Pernell Roberts' excellent performance as Adam. All the best to you.

@@jbenziggy I’ve heard very wonderful things about the Blocker family as well. I was first hired as a stand in for Valerie Perrine but they realized I was 2 inches shorter than Valerie so they hired an acquaintance of mine name Kenna Esperson for VP stand in and made me an extra in 3 scenes. I was lucky enough to meet many of the actors (even Jack Nicholson, ValeriePerrine, Harvey Keitel & Dirk) filming and due to my friendship with Sandy Maltz casting director. The movie crew even rented my dads beat up 4 wheel drive for hauling equipment around in the desert of El Paso Texas. It was a really cool experience I’ll never forget.
