Old School Sega is Back!

Sega recently released a trailer jam packed with new game titles from their past, bringing back popular IPs such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Streets of Rage and went on to mention there are more coming as well. Is the Old School Sega finally back? With Sega returning to making those arcade classic releases that made them the juggernaut they once were in the gaming industry, could this be a turning point for Sega? As a Sega kid and teenager throughout the entirity of the 90s, and with my Sega Saturn still getting more playtime than my Playstation 5, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the trailer for these 5 games returning, and just like all of you, the words "and more" at the end has my imagination reeling with what Sega could release from their old school catalogue, and I think this little trailer is more exciting than any of us realize because there are some sleeper mega hits in Sega's back catalogue that new releases could take the gaming world by storm, so let's talk about it!
So Sega recently released this trailer I am showing which real quick showcases new games on their way, starting with Jet Set Radio, a fan favorite that made it's debut on the Sega Dreamcast and has been revisited since the original Xbox : Others have tried to replicate it's artstyle over the years, but there has been a growing crowd wanting Jet Set Radio to return for many years now. Next up is Crazy Taxi which was a popular arcade hit brought home to Dreamcast to major success : Crazy Taxi is cool because there really hasn't been a game like it, and that's the theme with Sega, they were the kings of releasing quirky titles that presented gameplay that nobody else was even attempting to do back in the 90s. Sega was the bold videogame titan that did what Nintendon't, but remember that both of these titles released in the late late nineties, but then they showed off Streets of Rage which looks fantastic and coming off the success of Streets of Rage 4 recently released, this is taking a bold step in graphics and from the small clips we got, it looks great. Then there is Shinobi which I've been playing the most recent release of Shinobi on the Sega Saturn lately, and with this artstyle, I think they'll grab up a ton of new fans, and then we get Golden Axe, which was the most surprising of all the games shown to me, I never thought Sega would return to Golden Axe and although these clips are short, it does look like a return to the arcade classic that we haven't seen a real release since the Sega Genesis in the mid 90s. And then Sega pulls off the ultimate teaser move and says AND MORE which I think these two words got us Sega fans even more excited because it's likely they are working on big projects that bring back old school popular Sega IPs that they aren't ready to show off yet, and that's going to be a big focus of today's video, what else could Sega have cooking?
I can hope that they are working on some of their dormant RPG series that haven't seen the light of day in decades : Can we get a Shining Force 4? Can we get a new single-player RPG of Phantasy Star in the same style as the original 4? Can we get a new Skies of Arcadia? Can we get a little bit of the dungeon crawling Shining series like Shining in the Dark or Shining the Holy Ark? I would love to see Sega return to some of their RPG games, and the thought that they likely will has me salivating at the prospects.
Sega has a ton of IPs they can dig into, and we do live in a day and age where the video game landscape has changed, there is now a major demand for quirky titles, and Sega could pull off some major wins : Clockwork Knight, Nights into Dreams, Altered Beast, Beyond Oasis, Comix Zone, Ecco the Dolphin, Eternal Champions, Vectorman, ToeJam & Earl, Space Harrier and more : There is only one other company with as rich of IPs and that's Nintendo, but Nintendo has been digging into their popular IPs this entire time, while Sega has left most of theirs collecting dust. I believe this is all about to change, and finally Sega can return with the Mega Hits that made them the juggernauts they once were.

The fact that they released that 90's style trailer AND that "Sega!" scream at the end makes me so happy that at least Sega is sticking to its beautiful and nostalgic magic of the past.

So happy to see SEGA going into their toy chest and pulling out some old school gems. Now if only Activision could do the same with games like Pitfall, River Raid,

I'm overjoyed that Sega is finally showing faith in the IPs that endeared us to them decades ago. We have stayed loyal and have been waiting for you SEGAAA.

I was a SEGA kid, all my friends had Nintendo. Probably why I am a degenerate weirdo. I loved Phantasy Star, Shining in the Darkness, etc.

The first time I played Shinobi was in the arcade, and yeah, HAD to have it for Genesis! ONE of my favorite parts of the game was when you had ninja stars in your hands, and enemies are coming at you from the background...you know the part!
Golden Axe was one of my favorite games as a kid. I would love to smash some Gnomes for mana potions in the 2020's!

OH dude, tell me about it! I remember the first time I played Golden Axe was in our local arcade (bring em back, ya know?!)...riding those hybrid bird creatures, smashing the gnomes, and...my favorite character holding up his sword, and the lightning coming down and...everything obliterated!!!

Loved playing Golden Axe, reminds me of Gauntlet. If they were to do another one or re-release with updated graphics, my all time favorite rpg Shining Force would be killer!
I can’t believe Sega never did anything with Vectorman. That franchise is begging for a 3D reimagining

This is another game ahead of it's time. I wouldn't be surprised if someone fan-made an Unreal Engine (my personal fav) or Unity version of it. Definitely should be made in 3D

The very reason (in 96) that I bought the Sega Saturn in the first place was because I played the demo of Nights at Super Target...I was hooked, lol!
OHH also, Here's my list of SOME of my personal favorite Sega Titles from the past, all of which were massive successes (in their own right): - Altered Beast (The arcade version was the best!) - Disney's Aladdin (Personally I thought the SNES version was better) - Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers - Mortal Kombat (The classic, remade in 3D?! Jaw-dropping...pun intended) - Mortal Kombat II - Mortal Kombat 3 (OR Mortal Kombat 3: Ultimate Edition) - Ms. Pac-Man - NBA Jam - Sonic Spinball - Sonic the Hedgehog (Self-explanatory) - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (...getting there....) - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (...almost...) - Sonic & Knuckles (AHH, that's the sweet stuff!!) - Street Fighter II': Special Champion Edition!!!!!!! - X-Men ...these are just the Genesis titles! This isn't an exhaustive list by no means! BTW, God Bless you too!

Please bring back Ecco the dolphin @ SEGA ! 🐬 My kids love it on Dreamcast! Sega does what Nintendon't after all. Give us another taste of that beautiful blast processing power!

Happy to see the old sega coming back...but, even though they won't, it will never be the REAL old-school Sega without their own console! THAT was Sega for me (personally)! Still, this is loaded with nostalgia...I'LL TAKE IT!

@@TheNathanNAPALM Bro, so true! Could you imagine... After 23 years after the Dreamcast, they unveil the new Sonic the Hedgehog, true to the form of the first one... Then, some BS to fill in time... Suddenly, they say "... But, you're not going to be able to play it on ANY system on the market." The crowd is puzzled...a few of them "have a hunch." The room gets dead quiet. Then, one of the original Genesis developers walks out with a suitcase. Crowd is anticipating. Speaking with a poker face, he says, "and now, what we've been hiding for 7 years now, I will personally show you what NintenDON'T..." Crowd roars with laughter AND excitement, Anxious to see what they're hyping up. "Introducing...The Sega VisionQuest!" (Erm...or something like that 😎) The crowd loses their minds, Twitch and KZread temporarily experience the slowest bandwidth in both company's history (maybe not, lol), and all of the trailers shown are for this new system. Then they reveal that the games would still be on other consoles, later in the year. Could you imagine?!

Imagine if sega released a new console? They could partner with Panasonic or apple to design the hardware. They would sell like hotcakes if it was gamer centric

I would love Sega to grab up some hardware that is propriety : something made just for them, would give them an edge in the world of everybody just using standard PC guts to build their machines
Yes!!!!!!! I have been screaming for a new Phantasy Star like the originals. Not like the PSO series. The first 4 Phantasy Stars are gold. Also Shining Force is great too. I couldn't wrap my mind around how noone pursues these gold mine IPs

Is could be amazing if SEGA brings a console; if not, some great games like Golden Axe, Street of Rage, Shinobi, James Pond, Alex Kidd, Wonder Boy, Rastan, Dynamite Duke, Altered Beast to mention some.

lol hopefully not, I bet it's 5 different studios making the 5 games, they got the cashflow to do it from all the money they've made from mobile games, Persona 5 and PSO2, so I'm really hoping we get some solid games from Sega
Really got most exciting for golden Axe. I would love to see a new Burning Rangers. also a new Virtua Fighter / Fighting Vipers would be need. Or Eternal Chapions. Comic Zone would also be cool to get reImagine. And for RPG side, Panzer Dragoon Saga. ^^

Comic Zone...THAT was a game ahead of it's time! A video game, in the style of a comic book, and your character leaps from page to page? To see THAT in 3D...dude, I'm done! lol.
Cost in Canada will probably be $30 plus tax.

Aint happening. PSO 2 makes enough money and from the official reports on the segasammy financials they doubling down on it to make it bigger. And before anybody says it will become bigger because if they return it like the originals, there arent enough SEGA fans to make that happen. Were a small and aging userbase. SEGA is after a bigger audience and a younger crowd which is the point of the trailer. Most of the SEGA gamers left after DC or went to the arcades and eventually quit. The userbase SEGA has now are fans of franchises SEGA owns. But they not fans of SEGA as a brand. Meaning sonic fans stick to sonic, Total War fans stick to that series, Like A dragon fans stick to that game, they rarely if at all buy other SEGA titles like what used to happen back in SEGA's golden age. Be excited for the return but some of the games will not be the type of game you want and will reflect what companies think is popular with modern younger gamers.
Eccho was frustrating and slow. No thanks, hard pass on that one.

I certainly wasn't a rich kid, Sega Genesis was same price as Super Nintendo, and became cheaper than SNES within a short amount of time. I remember the Genesis with Sonic pack-in for $99 while the SNES was still $149

I always thought it was the exact opposite. Rich kids always seemed to have a Nintendo and a Gameboy while I only had a Sega Genesis.

I think he meant Sega Saturn, it was much pricier than the Playstation : my parents got me one from by buying off a friend at my dad's work for that glorious Christmas

I hate to break it to you mate but Sega wont bring out any RPGS otherwise wouldnt there be at least ONE RPG instead of 5 crap games? It is not going to happen and I wont be a beliver until I see PROOF its going to happen. Sega will betray their RPG fanbase..ITS IN THEIR NATURE

There is for sure something happening with Skies of Arcadia at least, PSO2 making them tons of money, so Phantasy Star single player isn’t that big of a reach, and if Sega is tapping into their past, they’d be fools not to make a new Shining Force

@@TheNathanNAPALM I havent seen any news on those games or their Exclusives from Japan and a lot of their best was Japan only for Mega drive. I know because I played them in English. Also as much as I want Skies of Arcadia the news on that is nearly 2 years old and no updates
