Well.....if you love Hip-Hop then you not only "like" some of the West Coast stuff, you love it. Now, before I start I'll say this-I'm on your side mostly-love the East Coast isht, love ....love Erick Sermon's beats and love how he helped more of his crew with classic tracks than Dre did. However, Dre has produced some awesome isht man, you gotta give it to the man, tracks such as Keep their Heads Ringin', Deep Cover, and Let Me Ride have the phat beats of which you speak. I particularly like the tracks High Powered and Standing on Death Row from the Chronic album for the big-ssa bottom on both tracks, just a I LOVE Erick Sermon's 'Lil Crazy and Hostile from his first solo joint for their big bottom ( man, did I bang all this isht back in the days working, living in my first apt, and funnin' with the chicks...ah, those days....). And don't even get me started on Premier tracks-what's fatter than the Jeru's Come Clean? Or most of Gangstarr's isht? ( Full Disclosure-Gangstarr is my fav group, so I"m biased). And damn, Havoc's beats are some of my best friends, Alchemist's also. I get the love for NY isht totally, we haven't even begun to discuss Beatminerz work on all of the Boot Camp isht. The most) slept on rap album of all time remains, Dah Shinin' by Smif and Wessun (followed, imo, closely by Sticky Fingaz-solo joint) And speaking of Onyx, how many beats are colder than the All we got is us track? Ominous start, menacing lyrics-one of my favs...ice cold. As far as intelligent rap, well, Ice Cube's first solo joint was a smart record man, far from being a NWA knock-off, it was more PE than it wasn't. Plus, it introduced a new concept in a female rapper , Yo-Yo. She was a female rapper that didn't sound butch, but sassy. Roxanne Shante was similar-they sounded like sassy black girls rappin' as opposed to say..Lyte. Salt and Pepa did....but they rapped in what I would call the "rap voice", like how broadcaster have that "broadcast voice". So, they didn't sound as authentic as Yo-Yo did. And no, I'm not a part of her family, just pointing out some of WC contributions. Another point about , how their respective music sounds, it would seem that Dre enjoyed the melodies of 70s funk moreso and Sermon enjoyed the rhythms more. So Dre's songs appear to keep the sampled melodies intact, while Sermon tries to keep most of a sampled song's groove.
