As an 80’s baby I loved hanging out in the CC parking lot after working my day shift at old navy on a Saturday. I had friends that worked in the CC car audio installation and would hook me up with open box items. If a customer returned items that they didn’t want I would get a huge discount as well. Those was the days…. Being a teenager in the late 90’s and booming on a budget.

That box got lucky.... Was stored in a damp environment, but not so damp that the MDF puffed up. For an easy to get plastic polish meguiares plastX (or a darn similar name) will work wonders on the medium and large scratches. It won't get them all out, but it smoothes them over and polishes them so they are MUCH less noticeable. It kicks butt with a power drill, you can't really overdue it, at least in my experience with a small foam pad. Works on radio faces and foggy headlights too, anything plastic.

I love the old school stuff! Reminds me of working at Best Buy back in like 1997. I would love to see the old LA Sound bandpass subwoofer that was part of their display back then if you could find one! I believe it had two 10's in it and one giant port on the top. I saw one for sale in a pawn shop a few years back and kick myself for not buying it. I passed because the surrounds were shot (port big enough to put your hand inside). I'm also always on the lookout for the Parts Express carpeted 4th order bandpass boxes they used to sell around 1993-1995. I used to dream about the 15" version back before I was old enough to have my own money. lol! I can't find any info on those at all.

I bought one of the LA Sound boxes from a pawn shop, it slapped for about 10 minutes until the old subs gave up. I made a replica of that box for 2 RF 10" subs and sealed it all up. That box would slam with nothing but a punch 45 on those 10s. More was better but that is all it took.

  • @KMFDM781

@@D3M3NT3Dstrang3r I remember it sounded pretty good in the Best Buy display and I loved the box design. Doesn't surprise me about the stock drivers being flippity floppity cheapos. lol. That was my thought when I saw the box at the pawn shop....throw in some better subs. I have a soft spot for bandpass boxes and that one was super cool looking and different than any other manufacturers premade sub boxes. Their amps were trash though. I had an old hand-me-down Punch 40 bridged down to 2 ohm on 2 series 1 Punch 12's in parallel (maybe 160 watts RMS?) and it hit harder with that amp than the "400 watt" LA Sound.

My Dad owned a shop back then. To make them hit harder they'd take these bandpass boxes apart, tape off the surrounds and coat the woofers in a few layers of clear resin with ample drying time inbetween to give the cones more mass. They'd also coat the cardboard ports with resin as well because they were prone to falling apart. They'd all use them in their personal vehicles and use their vehicles to show the boxes off to customers to sell them. Otherwise they'd sit on the shelf because no one wanted them. Might be a few very stiff and shiny coned bandpass box woofers still around out there with some tweaked parameters because of my late Dad's techniques lol. They kinda had to do what they had to do back then to get sales.

If you played them on the large showroom floor all you'd here was port noise, I remember this era of being able to demo a stack of different boxes at Circuit City or TweeterEtc. These boxes had to be tucked into a trunk behind a thick 80's or 90's interior to actually sound like they were producing bass, and with certain music they worked ok. However, I don't think I heard a decent sounding ported or bandpass box until JL Audio started building slot-port prefabs. It's a shame, because the same box volume with a few tweaks like a port that isn't made from a discarded paper towel roll, and these old subs will hit hard with far less power. I just picked up a similar pair of JBL 12"s but have yet to build a box for them.

So, added more mass/weight to the cone. Bad idea. Bad idea. And there goes any efficiency they had. Edit- that would change the low FS but not in a good way unless they also changed the volume of each side. Glad I didn’t ever go there. Also, doing that, adds zero to power handling, sound, nothing.

My desk speaker setup at home uses a pair of a/d/s l300s along with an a/d/s sub 6 bandpass subwoofer, which was actually originally designed by a/d/s for their premium sound systems in late 80s/ early 90s land rovers. I had that exact Bandpass with T5500 12’s in it. It pounded pretty hard. Ended up selling it after a year or so and got a set of 12WO’s in a sealed spec enclosure.

Rolled with some terminators in my extended cab s10, with a clarion board in the day. MTX was everywhere (terminators, blue thunders, and the like) when I was stupid in 1993. I had the local “alternator guy” try and beef up my stock alt. That was a fun time, learning on all ends. The Jl Audio line came in hard around that time. A dude came down from the “big city” with his Denon amp and drivers and blew me away with his gear also. (Also a s10, with a shell) Edit- I’m still stupid to this day. ForTheLoveofAudio.

I had the single 12 version of this. MTX TB12. I pulled it apart and added a passive 85Hz low pass crossover. I gave this to a friend who wanted a subwoofer and he pulled the 12" sub and burnt the woofer box... I wasn't overly thrilled with that, but people do stupid things. I also upgraded mine to 14 gauge ofc wire.

As someone that worked in the installation bay at a circuit city. The road thunder series boxes were sold as the box with subs and as a combo with a matching road thunder series amp. This all happened the same year mtx joined "Pimp My Ride" it was junk mostly rebranded power acoustic stuff. I had legit mtx subs in my H22A swapped CRX at that time (kswap not a thing yet) just 2 tens on an audiobahn A2300HCX in 2004. Then in 2006 got a scion XB RS I built for audio you can find that in the 2008 car audio mags

@raymo6795 I think it was the same year Tokyo drift hit DVD that everything turned to shit. It was odd though the higher end stuff was still around, but we got a big influx of budget mtx junk. I had so many people ask me, "Is that any good?" and me saying, "F, no grab the hifonics Brutus amp it won't do rated, but it will at least get in the ballpark. In fact, I had one guy with a 99 Jeep xj he wanted the most bang per watt possible. While hitting the lows hard. I sketched out a box that was a 14in sono tube with a 6in tube pvc pipe I formed into a dual 11in flare port with a pair of dayton 10 isobaric loaded and tuned for 28hz 2.9cuft net. It had no problem taking 1000w rms and doing 149.6db in a untreated xj it broke the rear view mirror off on the first hit and was so efficient that we turned the gain on the amp almost to zero his avic 1 had 5.5v rms rca and the amp was only putting out around 600w but the lows hit so hard the jeep was ripping it's self apart. He was beside himself with how crazy this odd looking tube box just smashed lows it peaked at 36hz at around +9db of gain in the cabin sealed +11 outlaw but got a bit choppy about 90hz witch is why I did proaudio 8in + 5.25in + horns as a 3way in the doors

If I remember, they did the 6ohm driver's so it would make a 3 ohm load for the amp, and with rise it would be the 4ohm+ but pull a little more out of the amp. JL was widely known for this

No, not really.. They can in worst case catch more humidity in the box so it can go both ways. And with plexy glass they are also exposed to the sun etc depending on the storage. Storage and what material the surround on the drivers etc are key. Seen ALOT of drivers beeikg 50+ years old still looking like new and none of them was in bandpass boxes

That wire is fine for those speakers. Length is the key. You are at only about .02 to .03 ohms with that (looks like about 2 feet. maybe 3) for 20 awg wire. Doesn't look very cool, though :). Keep up the great videos. Old school stuff is so good!
