OLD Kitchen Table Makeover Light Grey Stain | beginner friendly, step by step how to

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I show you how to diy grey stain so you can makeover a dated table and remove those orange tones.
We are using a white wash stain and a warm grey (here I'm using BriarSmoke by Varathane)
Table top Products used:
Sandpaper grit 80, 120, 220: amzn.to/3bxhu2M
White wash pickling stain by minwax: amzn.to/3bveh3N
Briarsmoke by Varathane in gray: amzn.to/3bA1Js1
Wipe on poly by minwax: amzn.to/38r46vj
Chairs and table skirt products:
Primer: (you could use but I didn’t on this project) Zinnzer bullseye Bin1-2-3: amzn.to/2PFa3hp
Paint: Pure white by Sherwin Williams: amzn.to/38r4z0x
Waxes used: Blend of white brown and black to get desired color, this was a pain!
Try Gray Barnwood Wax By Craft Smart, you can buy from Michaels instead for $7
Wax’s I blended
In video were: white wax by Behr chalk paint line
Special dark wax by Minwax: amzn.to/3ccKdZS
Ebony wax by Briwax: amzn.to/2OHTKQl

This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. kzread.infoUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.

SO AWESOME!!!! I'm the fearless 76 year old that is doing my first piece, the ENTIRE dining room set including the table that seats 10. I've considered many colors including seafoam, blue, green and turquoise but decided on a soft dove grey with metallic silver accents and doing the top of table exactly as you have demonstrated in soft but natural wood grain finish. I'm a resent widow after 5 long years of my husband's brain injury hospitalization and i was in a very dark place of the heart but God's perfect timing has raised my spirits up and I'm feeling very much looking into the future and following my artistic self again. Thank you for the inspiration ❤

@@alebronlebrona6886 Thank you for asking. My vision seems light years away from reality! Initially planning on white base then grey and silver accents for a traditional look. New vision going to pale aqua with silver and gold accents plus using the Rustoleum Metallic White Pearl over the entire white dining room. Sadly i live in Canada specifically Mississauga (part of the city of Toronto)and the supplies are extremely difficult to hunt down. Besides the aqua and pearl wash i was planning to paint a garden with grasses, butterflies, birds and flowers on the sides of both buffet and sides. It's a challenge mentally and physically hunting for supplies of even basic paints very much unlike the beautiful and blessed USA. Most often because of covid the brick and mortar retailers have empty shelves and online shopping can be disappointing. God bless you for thinking of me. Not sure if i can send you pictures of my progress.

One tip of advice I'll give about the wipe on poly. Pay attention when purchasing to whether it is a clear gloss, satin, and there was also a warm gloss or I think a warm Satin. I do not have a clue what the warm finishes look like? And if you do not want any shine or gloss I recommend varathane three times the thickness matte finish. Don't be afraid of the milky white color! It dries to a clear flat matte finish. That is what I used on my barn doors

I love this, I have this table, it does have that veneer too. I'm going to give this a shot. My questions 3 mos. later, are, did you sand the chairs 1st and could I use a water based paint instead of oil? I have never worked with oil based paint. Anyway, you may have answered this already, I'll look through the comments in the meantime. Thank you for such a beautiful design, especially the trim work!

I scuff sanded most used parts of the chairs with a 220 grit sanding pad. The white paint i used for the chairs is water based, the only thing that was oil was the grey stain I used on the table and I had to use that because it was the only stain I could find in that color. A lot of furniture painters use a paint wash technique instead of stain to avoid chemicals. The way you do that is to mix water with your water based paint and then apply the same way you would apply a stain. I need to do a video on that! Hope that helps! General finishes makes a water based gel stain called ''no pain Gel stain" check that one out!

Amazing process, I loved the finished look.I have a table very similar and want to do the same thing, painted base and stained top. A question for you- did you use any of the grayed wax on the base to tie in the color? On a different note, I recently bought an oak gentlemen’s dresser for my bedroom. It is pretty old so I want to clean it up and revamp the hinges and handles. What product do I use to clean it up. I’m not intending to refinish it or repaint it.

I am newer to refinishing furniture and there is so much info. Am I correct that you should remove all old finishes to stain but a light sanding is okay if painting?

  • @blacksheephouse

Hey Sue, you’re right there is a lot of info out there 😅 but you are correct that to stain you’ll need to strip the existing finish off and then stain but to paint, all you need is a scuff sand and a primer like Zinnser is great to add before painting also. It’s a fun hobby, enjoy your project!

@@blacksheephouse ...how did you get into the grooves where the 'J' curves from the back of the chairs to the seat.

Zane Blane I just flipped the chairs over and used my paint brush, then flipped them back and did the same, there’s a lot of angles on those chairs! I just assume anything I missed doesn’t show when the chairs are sitting at a table. Chairs are definitely a pain that way 😅

This is beautiful! We actually just got my husband’s grandmother’s old table & it is beautiful but I want to paint the bottom portion of the table white & the chairs have this beautiful floral detailing on the back I really want to use your idea with the wax to create that contrast between the white & the grooves of the detailing so it doesn’t look so stark white but I don’t want to paint the seats of the chairs. Just the backs & legs. What’s the best way to cover the seat? I’m afraid of using painters tape because I don’t want to damage the seat. It is solid oak but the has laminate on top of the wood.

Thanks, that will look stunning! I would use frog brand painters tape, they have one for delicate surfaces it is the yellow one from frog tape

I’ve made a bunch of rookie mistakes and about to sand down and start over for the third time. I can’t very close to perfection this time but when I put on the wipe on poly stain it took up the dark stain. So did I not let the dark stain dry long enough? I did not use the gel version of Varathane Briar smoke but I did use the oil based stain by the company and added a bit of an oil based minwax gray to get closer to the color I needed.
