Gran Turismo 2 review
Platform: PlayStation
Release Year: 1999
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment
Improving on its predecessor in almost every way, Gran Turismo 2 is one the best racers and PS1 games, anyone who is into gaming or cars would've played this at least once. The usual formula of 10,000 to start with, licences to obtain, you must work your way to the top to be the best driver in the world...

if you rub the logo on the disc lightly and smell the logo you can smell car tires, not everyone knows this perk. when they said smells real. they literally meant it.

@Stephen Lee If he's 21 now, in early 2021, he was probably born in 1999. So he'd be 4 or 5 years old in 2003-2004, the PS1 was at his grandparents' house because they had the newer PS2 at their parents' house but still wanted something to play when visiting the g-rents (my Genesis was at my grandparents' house for a while). Over all, it works, but this seems like a tough game for a 4 or 5 year old.

Yes! Also there are cars and tracks from GT2 that unfortunately never came back again in the other GT games… By far one of the best GT games + the intro! I love it! Especially the european version with ''My Favorite Game (Faithless Remix)'' I think it fits so well to the intro! The way it flows along the intro… ;) Pure Nostalgia… The US version has the original ''My Favorite Game'' song, which is still good, and the japanese version has the ''Moon Over The Castle'' song, also really good! ...but I still prefer the european version, it's the best one! ;) I still got the game and the PS1, which still works fine after all the years! I've managed to get GT2 glitch only once, and it was quite magical. I'm not sure what exactly caused it, but I basically clipped through another car and both of us kept on driving while being stuck to one another. Not only that, but the game interpret it as the two of us constantly crashing into one another, so it wasn't very pleasant to listen to.

There aren't many games I can confidently say I could re-play every single year but man, there is just soooo much to love with GT2. I love this series to death but GT2 especially. It's sorta incredible how well this entry holds up to this very day.
This game has some features that were way ahead of it's time. I I played it for the first time last week, and been playing it since then. The only game in recent memory that got me hooked like that was The Witcher 3.
Gran Turismo 2 was awesome. They put awesome muscle cars in it. 67 Plymouth GTX, 71 Plymouth Road Runner (Plymouth Muscle Car), 67 Merc Cougar and many more. I loved the Seattle track.
Keep up these retro video game reviews!!! So many awesome games that people never go over them nowadays
Mines Skyline R32 babe GT2 was amazing with so much content that it took me years to finish it also GT 2 was made for the hardcore only, they cut out the casual gamers entirely which they admitted to also getting all gold on the license tests = rare cars that you can keep or sell for wads of cash and was worth it, also while it may seem stupid completing the license tests teaching you how to corner properly, if you don't corner properly you're not going to do well on the hardest difficulty, I've also never had a problem with the rubber banding because the AI was slow, very slow.
Wow, fantastic review! Deserves way, way, way more views.
Amazing review! I’m gonna watch em all :)
I'm here because I've got an itch to go play this again. I found this on a classic game shop shelf for $10. At first, I wondered if it was worth it, since I already owned the first game, but then I heard they substantially upped the number of cars, and after brief consideration, I just couldn't resist. That was $10 well spent, it's just an incredible game.
just found your review. that Yellow Stagea though, my favourite wagon of all time! Use cheap 90 Box Supra until you can get the Stagea as prize car, then amp it up to 600hp, adjust gear ratio. feels nice for drifting on Seattle Circuit hahah.

Awesome review, again! I don't know why but I really love your reviews. Anyways it's good to see that GT2, right? Is improving upon and adding more content from the first one. I know almost every game triple A game in 2019 does that. Like the sports and COD games like you said. But also like you said Polyphony put a lot of additional content in this one. Even though it's very similar to first one it still gave you a lot talk about. And that's amazing. Thanks again. Can't wait to watch your GT3: A-Spec review. See you next time!

Also the soundtrack... cannot remember if it was GT or arcade disc - but heck The Cardigans - my favourite game is a Song I listen to on a regular basis thanks to GT2!
in GT1, you can put R33 GTR to the 930HP, but severely limited with 5 gears only transmission. In Gt2, R33 GTR max power were limited just to 630HP and also fixing highly-tuned turbo cars taking longer time to spool up. Handling sometimes going whack when using ABS brake control, traction control and even active stability control.
Speed is the name of the game speedways, raceways, road courses, rally and endurance.
There's no rubber banding my dude. The AI cars are catching you with a combination of slip-stream and the fact that you're braking too late and/or sliding all over the place like a madman instead of taking the proper smooth racing line. I've played these games a lot over the years, and if you race well and maintain your line and speed its absolutely possible break away from the AI beyond the range at which they can get the benefits of slipstreaming and even lap them if the race is long enough (although obviously this becomes easier or harder depending on the relative power of your car to theirs). The games are intended to be a simulator (its in the name) so the idea that they would put rubber banding in there is kind of antithetical to what they were going for. Its not rubber-banding, its just punishing your mistakes.

Never understood the complaints with rubber-banding in this game. I've been playing this game for 20 years and not once did I feel that the other cars were unfairly keeping up with me. Most of the time, I end up with a huuuuuge lead. As long as you get within 50 of the horsepower limit for a race AND properly balance your car (handling, braking, acceleration), you should have no problem blowing away the competition. I think a lot of people just expect that they can throw a bunch of hp upgrades on and win. All the power in the world means nothing if you can't take corners well and rapidly accelerate out of turns.

I loved the review. This is STILL the game I've played the most. I've achieved everything there was to achieve. Too bad the garage had a 100 cars limit. Just some corrections. This was not a hard game. Once you managed to achieved speed, it's not a piece of cake, but close. The hard part of the game is the one you have to race (very) slow street cars. By the way, yes, it's boooring at the begining. But it's worth it. That's where contemporary games, like the Need For Speed's, were obviously more apealling, since you could race fast cars frome the very start. I had no problem with that, though. I am 36 and I really hate how children now NEED to play too easy games so they don't get frustrated. I was really disappointed with GT3 and GT4, since they have many circuits and fast cars available from the start.
If you pass all the B License tests with a Gold rating, that S2000 you get is by far the best first car you can obtain. Without modding it once, many races can be won.
Btw the career section of GTSPORT has the BGM Of arcade mode from gt2
A smelling CD is worth millions today = D
More content than racing games in 2018 with dlc and paltry amount of car to select. Not to mention they are missing the joy of letting you to purchase the upgrades....

Smells real = scratch and smell disc on the blue one.
gtr with initial upgrades and eventually to 1000+hp was the car that leveled me up, and eventually buying the 787b and the toyota la mans.
I think the reason why there's spectator stands in the license test-only tracks is so that the instructors and their students can watch you.

this is the first gran turismo game that i ever played and the one i played the most, not much of an evolution to the original GT but still an excellent game, with the best ost of the franchise imho.
I owe this game so much.
Aaaahhh back when there were no racing lines in games just corner markers. Gt2 even though it was fun the a.i cars were unusually fast! Even if you're using same car as a.i, they will outrun you on the straight as if they have 800-900 bhp!! But I used gameshark codes to modify car weight :)
Back in the day in Japan, this game was a time killer.
Played both and concluded some things: GT1 handling had tendency to fly, GT2 handling tends to grips Actually i finished license test however the save went corrupt so i used gold license tests
There's a scratch and sniff on the pal disc. Smells of burning rubber.
Anyone else remember the playstation discs that you could scratch and it would give off a scent? From memory Fifa 96 was one of them. I bet you any money GT2 was also one maybe with a gasoline smell or a burnt rubber smell
If there's rubber banding in GT2, then it must be a joke, cause there are several factors as to why some boxes can keep up with your Supra. 1. Car weight and acceleration- With how cars are handled in this game, your weight and transmission affect your acceleration, GREATLY. The Supra has decent starting BHP, but the main thing that holds it back is that it's stupidly heavy and has below average acceleration, just a better top speed, but a better top speed only is viable on more straights, Tahiti Road has more turns and chicanes than straights. Those boxes keep up with you because either their acceleration is better, they drive aggressively with you if you drive like shit and don't follow the racing line, or punish you for your mistakes. 2. Handling and understanding of your drive type- Every car handles differently and if you don't try to get a feel for all of them, you will struggle since most of the high end cars are MR type handlers, vehicles that handle well but spin out easier than the rest of the cast. I've driven a lot of cars in this game and if you have a car that handles well, accelerates like a beast, and you drive good, you will literally make a gap between you and the competition. Even if you make mistakes, cause I sure did, I drove aggressively and still followed the racing line and quickly caught back up, the more mistakes you make, the more likely you will struggle in terms of keeping up.

There is a quite sizeable rubber band. Try to complete a race by using OP cars, blast away in front then look at AI finishing time. Then try to do the same, but drive the same speed as AI. You'll notice it. Note : Endurance races don't have rubberbanding I think, as I can more easily leave AI in the dust.
I still love this game
