ToCA is just pronounced as it is as one word and it stands for Touring car association. It's what run's the BTCC. Loved this game A lot.

First time I actually hear someone spelling it, Toca is such a catchy name, definitely better than Grid, which gets lost between the Dirts, the Shifts, and the Cars.

They actually DID use the NASCAR brand to market TOCA, the renamed the game 'Jarrett and Labonte Racing' for the US market.

AFAIK it was only for the third game in the series (last one from PS1 era), which was pretty decent at the time.

That was only for the third installment, TOCA World Touring Cars.

@meetmeat24hrfitness I'm sure that the game used the names of Dale Jarrett and Bobby Labonte, but If we talk about the cover art for the game: Jason Jarrett and Justin Labonte, former NASCAR drivers. Jason Jarrett is the son of 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Dale Jarrett. Justin Labonte is the nephew of 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion Bobby Labonte.

I remember playing the demo for Jarrett and Labonte Racing back in 2000. I was impressed with the car damage modeling at the time. Later I really enjoyed playing GRID in 2008.

It wasn't licensed by NASCAR. There are no stock cars or ovals.
You actually can turn while braking, it's just none of the cars have ABS, so you need to be very light and gentle on the pedal to keep the front wheels from locking up. Took a while to figure it out back in the day but I figured it out! :D
I wish you would have talked more about the damage model because while graphically, the game is sub-par in contrast to GT, GT did not have proper damage models until the last game.

Agreed, I thought the damage model was great especially in the year 2002 in difference to GT. Also the I feel this and a few other reviews lack structure and information between his opinions and the lack of factual aspects of the game, w/o much elaboration, leaving the video feeling short as you implied. @ColourShedProductions
Cars *can* turn while braking in real life. Unless you lock your wheels, and that's what ABS is for.

One of my favourite games... part of my childhood. I do speedruns for it! What a great channel I just found!
Your channel brings me so much nostalgia! Thanks for reviewing old racing games!
4:16 "Tim Harvey: was out of order!" "Great work! Now try to gain another place!"
I got this back in 2003 for the PS2. I was confused with later installments because this one was called Pro Race Driver.
actually real cars can turn while braking, unless you lockup your brakes, which can be prevented with ABS, or just pumping your brakes
It's one of the only Sim Racers, to have 4player Split screen. And for that reason alone, i put it along side next games like Halo 2 and Rallisport challenge and Project gotham Racing
Oh I loved this game back when I was little. I loved the variety of tracks and cars, and I even liked the career mode! AND I finally, after over 15 years, realised why I kept getting disqualified... I don't know if I knew what I was doing wrong.

When it's easier to "play" through the 2000 DTM season than actually watch full footage of it.
Great review! I love this series.
I used to play this, when online gameplay was new. Loved it.
I kinda have to agree with you on this one. The career mode with the contracts and all that is cool but it doesn't outweigh the bad stuff. The second is IMO the best one. Third is good although I always thought the controls on that are a bit too spongy and the AI can be pretty brutal as well. Like the videos, btw, subscribed! :)
Loved playing this as a kid.
The damage physics were hilarious. You could really bend your car out of shape and still win!!
It has the widescreen option for PS2 - it will read your setting from PS2 system settings and set the aspect accordingly - there's no option for that in game. Also PC version had far superior graphics mainly due higher res and more detail. And you can start without wheelspinning and losing positions, it's just a bit tricky.
I remember having TOCA touring cars 2 on ps1 and enjoying it, i had a demo for this game and thought at the time the graphics were great
Love the jumper "Torn Clothing"
I loved this, i still own my original bought on release pc rom
One of the most fun games to play vs, 4 players on the same PC. With any gamepad. This and micromachines V3 are pure 4 players fun.

A few weeks ago I downloaded this game and works fine on Windows 10 X64.
It's quite the coincidence that Ryan McKane appears to be related to Nathan McKane, one of your two main antagonists in the GRID games later on (the ones who drive for Ravenwest).
seen alot of awesome content here. Shoulda subbed 12 months ago lol. subbed
Please review the Midnight Club games!
I remember playing this as an 8 year old back in 2008. For some reason the steering felt distant and weird like with the Colin Mcrae series of that time. Also, I would end 1 race in first place, but then the difficulty spiked like a madman and the next race or 2 I would be last, even on the lowest difficulty. I never finished it because of that. (Also because I didn't grow up with asphalt racing games or a sim in this case, I was more into RalliSport Challenge 1 and 2) But I did always enjoy the splitscreen for the destruction and chaos you could create, the realism and variaty of the tracks and the cars(handling aside)
actually Toca wasn't the only franchise to fully licence the Supercars, there's also a 2002 game called V8 Challenge, made by DICE and published by EA
Great review. However, I remember liking this game!
I love the career mode
The PS2 version does have widescreen, it's based on your ps2 settings, you even were playing it in wide mode but just weren't realising it
Did you play only on PS? should have played it on the PC online! lot of fun! cars flying at the start because of the lag, pieces of cars down the road and lots of people cursing at the chat xD I miss this so much :')
Have you ever down a review on TOCA 1, TOCA 2 or World Touring Cars?
One of my fav games
Love the overall design of the menus tho
ToCA Race Driver 2 and 3 were the best for me, but this one is great as well
Dude, Toe-Ka. Just say Toe-Ka. Nice vid btw.
The nice thing with these Race games...ToCa, ToCa2 ,Racedriver, Racedriver2, was U was allowed to make contact with other Cars. That made racing very fierce ! ToCa2 and after had very smart A.I. for their Days, U hit a Guy, he would certainly try and hit U back at another corner ! I really enjoyed al mentioned above, finished them all !
great review, have you thought about reviewing grid?

If I had any of them, I thought I'd review the 6th generation TOCA games as a compromise in the meantime...
Un jeu parfait pour l'époque , et le plus une histoire autour de la compétition ce que l'on ne retrouve pas aujourd'hui , hélas , pas de bug , de mises à jour , merci pour cette vidéo souvenir.
Does the game have bonnet cam too?
I hate so much that you cant restart a race in career mode. I would always crash and i would always have to eject the disc and restart the game.
Can I say something nothing offensive but is this game already in widescreen it look weird i wonder if it users the console settings
1:23 or the Stock Car name in South America. For the aussies, check it out, 2024 is the final season of the V8 sedans in the sport so don't miss it if you're interested in another supercars-like series. I mean, the races are in the other side of the world and there is 99% of chance that there are no channels broadcasting but there's a youtube channel For context, they're turning the cars into V6 hybrid SUV-based race cars. No, i'm not joking. Yes, the higher-ups are not very intelligent
But I really love this game, even it makes me nostalgia. Thanks to this game I learned how properly need to drive a race car without crashing. Not like some Lego racing, where you just hold an accelerator an pass the race. Also in this game we have to challenge with the pro racers, which back in time it was hard.
THIS MUSIC IS SO NOSTALGIC!!!
I love this game
You can get some practice on the tracks your racing on career mode. In the car setup it saids test drive and you can test the track.
What was the song at the start of the video?

I hate how you couldn't restart. I played this on the original xbox and when i crashed i ejected the disc start the game up and do the race again. I did this quite alot and a got really far into the game.
Can you do a review of gran Turismo PSP. I love that game to death. Some people complain that since it has no career mode it is worthless. But if you think about it it kind of does. AND IT IS PORTABLE (and the licences aren't mandatory) I would love to hear your opinion on it since you seem to be a fan of gran Turismo

On Xbox this and Forza 1 were my childhood. It looked much better than ps2 aswell
This game as a lot of good reviews and I can see why people like this game: it's really good. Also the game called Pro Race Driver in North America.
Ryan McKane is the protagonist? He doesn't have a brother named Nathan by any chance, does he?
That GRID music
what Crountry Ryan from
TOCA is a word :)
I have these games as Dtm race driver 1 and 2 on my xbox. The story is so dark in the beginning
off the pixels could've used the pc version and cranked the settings up and resolution

4:30 the ripped body parts staying on track was a thing in the very first Toca, on PlayStation 1. I couldn't race it due to controls, you spinned around at any touching the grass, far cry from Gran Turismo having no damage and easy shortcuts.
"TOCA ... I don't even know what it stands for" xD xD xD
The damage model on these TOCA games turns me on
The fact you can drive AU Falcons makes this an automatic 10/10 just saying
You can achieve a near perfect start by putting the throttle around 95%
Grid theme in the background
+Colourshedproductions I would agree with you mate, I didn't like it either, I'd stick to either Gran Turismo, and Forza Motorsport. Much better off with those. I had this game, and I eventually sold it.

Ultimate Purist , Instead of that general dismissal, I'd point you to at least experience that generation's ToCA 3 from an NTSC-U perspective on the PlayStation2 (having used the DualShock2 and Logitech Driving Force GT while not yet utilizing the ol' PS1-PS2 MadCatz2 wheel - the latter hardware, when compatible, has steering range and deadzone adjustment in the wheel albeit while utilizing a small mechanical degree of rotation with rumble \ ~shock instead of force feedback ) ____ Ignore the story in that mode and enjoy the racing, vehicle tuning and upgrades therein. ¤¤¤¤¤¤ ToCA3 NTSC-U features : ___ Widescreen mode exists and has a much improved horizontal field of view while I don't believe the vertical angle gets cropped in widescreen view = simply acquiring more in the horizontal field ( ___ via a stock console's system settings before inserting disc ___ ) ___ A x-player linked arcade-like experience using the LAN multiplayer option ( 'Network' play ) - ethernet networking 2 to 8 PS2 consoles together while supporting USB audio chat [headset\other] or, otherwise, USB keyboard chat all via an old ethernet switch. The simple, cheap setup provides buttery smooth full-screen, widescreen driver's perspective = great fun with an unnoticed affect on the network given the low bandwidth requirements and thus LAN likely runs pretty good over the internet using XLink Kai but haven't tried that yet (depending on bad=high ping connections, no matter the connection speed) . ___ The driver's PoV is great at showing weight transfer say in a Scandinavian flick or under hard braking leading into a switchback corner where one hooks the ditch with a wheel and \ or applies the handbrake to rotate the car as an example in one of the rally races. ____ ToCA3 currently has a fan-made server for racing using the original "Play Online" menu option - not the same as LAN \ Network play over internet via XLink Kai - and the fella has the DNS address to the server including regions supported somewhere in the descriptions of his KZread videos of online play of ToCA3 among others like CoD3 , CoD2 , Tribes: Aerial Assault, Flatout 2, Crash 'n' Burn, Twisted Metal: Black - Online, Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge, etc. ... mostly in Portuguese but does offer some English
6:08 I think you might change your mind for that If you play R: Racing Evolution.
I know it as dtm race driver^^
Its pronounced Toe-kah
This game was fun until the career mode got too difficult. 😢 You have to drive literally perfectly to even get close to a podium finish.
6:57 Okay, so what are the redeeming qualities then? I miss that part of the review.
Wait... Was that comic sans?
literally no one calls is Tee oh cee ay, it's Toca
Who else gets annoyed with him saying T.O.C.A. instead of TOCA...
I only like this game cuz of the 2001 DTM season (only appearence in a game ever (and only on PS2 :(( ))
This game made me a better driver
Cars can obviously turn whilst braking in real life.
1:52 ??? What ? Most of ps2 games are 4:3. This means you never played many ps2 games .
4:51 ABS is a thing
This game is shit, thank you for this video. I spent the last hour raging at it just so i can watch your video and laugh my ass off knowing i'm not the only one who suffered.
mate this video had 420 thumbs up..........I just added it to 421 Shwaked
It's TOCA (say as one word) not T O C A (seperate letters)
Damn, his dad crashed and died in Michigan? Tough luck, this place blows lol
Just say TOCA ... for the love of God dude.
Based TOCA geo-specific game names tricking V8/stockcar/DTM bogans/rednecks/elitists into playing a real racing game.
1:05 why atari?? 😂 Toca 3 is codemasters
toe-kah
"Tokka"
nope i dont
