Alan Wake the character is performed by two people. His physical actor Ilkka Villi and his voice actor Matthew Porretta. I loved to see them both on the stage at TGA, with Poretta singing Alan's lines and Villi dancing in the middle. Lovely stuff!

Let me put it like this: Poets of the Fall are the only band I ever bought merchandise from. Their normal songs are even better, all the Old-Gods-songs were written for video-games. Olli, the guitarist is awesome. I attended their gig in Cologne in September 2022 and prior to the gig he was running past me. I shouted at him, wishing him good luck and he stopped and came all the way back and shook my hand. I was so shocked I couldn’t say anything but “thank you” a million times. 😄 Seriously, these guys are fantastic, please check them out.

Same character sings both songs and I think it is rare to video game ost feature tango, let alone custom made one. Also The Game Awards 2019 orchestra performed a part of it with a guest singer too so that is cool imo.

To sum it up, in Alan Wake there are two characters that are senile, somewhat insane old brothers named Odin and Tor, who had the band "Old Gods of Asgard" in the 70s. They are important to the plot because their old songs had clues to the story, and Alan Wake 1 you actually have to seek one of their old songs out to learn the truth. (That song being "The poet and the muse"). Since then they've made many more songs as you have seen, each being important to the lore of the games with their lyrics! It is funny as well because one main premise of Alan Wake is that his fictional horror stories start coming true around him, and now we have a "fictional" band becoming ever more popular in real life! Amazing video and I look forward to you checking out their other songs! 😁

In the Alan Wake 2 game, the song is presented as part of a sequence where as you play through the level the music and scenes you see in the music video develops and play around you. It's a really neat experience, and although Alan Wake 2 is a horror game, its setting including themes around creativity, the dark place, The Old Gods of Asgard, and general use of live action and cinematic style integrated throughout the game allows this music sequence to fit in really well to the game too. As a longtime fan of this franchise and the music in it, it was awesome to play though that first time (and continue to listen to again). It's also a treat that they released the live action parts as a music video and got to see Poets of the Fall and the AW2 cast perform it live at the Video Game Awards. There are a lot of good Old Gods of Asgard and Poets of the Fall songs in Remedy's games, especially the Alan Wake and Control games. The Poet and the Muse (AW1), Balance Slays the Demon (AWAN), Take Control (Control), and Dark Ocean Summoning (AW2) are some of my favorites in addition to Herald of Darkness (which is probably my favorite). Interestingly in Alan Wake's American Nightmare The Poets of the Fall are referenced as well, and a song credited to the Poets of the Fall called "The Happy Song" is in that game. So, both OGOoA and PotF seem to exist in Remedy's Alan Wake / Control universe.

Yey! Finally! I have been looking forward to this... 😃 Poets of the Fall is a whole rabbit hole to dive into (and OGOA have several great songs). I definitely recommend watching a play through video of Alan Wake 2 for the part We Sing (there are plenty on YT), as it puts the whole live performance into perspective (and is insanely well done with huge technical complexity on the background). The very happy guy in the suit dancing is Sam Lake (Sami Järvi), the creative director of Remedy Entertainment. OGOA is made up of the three founding members of Poets of the Fall, which performs with six people. Olli Tukiainen is the guitarist you are referring to (my brother played with him and Marko Saaresto, the lead singer, a long time ago in a different band). Note: the voice actor for Alan Wake is Matthew Porretta, so he sings Alan's parts. Mr Door is played by David Harewood. Obviously Matthew and David are guest performers on this song only.

So the head of Remedy, Sam Lake, was close friends with the members of Poets before they were a band. That friendship is a large part of why Poets has such a close bond with Remedy and gave their performances to Old Gods of Asgard. The Old Gods exist within the universe of Remedy's games and have their own history within the game's lore.

In the live version, the singers to the right are the character voice actors, while the man dancing in the middle is the person who's likeness is used for the character of Alan Wake in the game. So essentially, Alan is played by two actors, one for the voice while the pther does the movements while lip syncing, so they did the same for the live performance.

Their music is amazing, and both variations of the band push out amazing numbers! If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend listening to Old Gods of Asgards first album which released in December, it’s the culmination of all their music in the games for the Alan Wake universe. Unless of course you were planning on waiting to react to them all, in which case I’d love to see how much you like their other songs! Poets of the Fall has been my favorite band since about 2011 or so and I have loved them ever since. The first song they put out there as a band was for another remedy game called Max Payne 2 called Late Goodbye. That's how they met Markus (aka Captain), and got their name out there at the beginning, by working with Remedy. Sam Lake, the creator of Max Payne, Control and Alan Wake is a friend of Marko's and he also appeared on stage and in the music video here, too. Sam plays Alex Casey in Alan Wake. Anyways! If you'd like to check out more Poets songs, I recommend starting out with songs like Carnival of Rust, Lift, False Kings, Angel (look for Alexander Theater Sessions version), and War (another Alan Wake song).

This is also missing the aspect that this music video is compilation of ingame "video screens". It's really worth noting that this embeds beatifully into actual gameplay. It was insanely cool experience to see actual music within gameplay that was insanely well put. Plus it really tells in lyrics and parts what really happened in previous game title. In actuality that musical scene lasted for me like plus 15mins. It is insane how well they created loops of music. I mean when you play, you'll see those moves pointing player to correct locations, you'll notice in video there are those kinda hand throws, it's also remarkable that it didn't feel so-to-say repeating at all like loops usually tend to do. So music will loop until you get further to proper locations where really surrealistically video displays pop-up and the song continues. It's really like in this "compilation" video. True chapters. I haven't ever seen such audio/video/musical/storytelling piece/gameplay scene and I wouldn't be surprised if I'll ever see one as this put the bar so high up that it'll take great efforts to go beyond it. It's also funny that the slim guy in dark suit that is dancing is I think "artistic manager" of Remedy entertainment (Sami Järvi/Sam Lake) so one of gamestudios boss is dancing there, which is also quite funny. Apparently he knows Poets of the Fall band head personally really well and POTF wanted to create this Old guards of Asgard name just for Remedy's games. Actually POTF rose to knowledge from Remedys first Max Payne game were their song was first heard in game ending iirc. I suppose this is the reason these two companies match so insanely well. Plus game has internal movies scenes of like maybe for an hour, where Järvi playes parts too.

So to give some context, the Alan Wake games are very much horror games, with heavy inspiration from Steven King and the Twin Peaks tv show. In the first game, which this song is summarizing, Alan Wake is a writer that goes on a vacation to a small coastal town with his wife, while suffering from writers block. While staying at a small lake house, he gets into an argument with his wife when he finds out she brought him there to get help from a local psychiatrist, and shortly after leaving the house in anger, he hears her cry for help and sees her falling into the lake. After jumping into the lake to save her, he wakes up in a crashed car, just outside of town, with no memory of what happened. As the game goes on he discovers manuscript pages from a horror novel he doesn't remember writing, and all the things he wrote are coming true. At the same time, the local towns people are being possessed by a dark shadowlike presence that can only be destroyed by shining light on it, hence his use of a flashlight to weaken the enemies. Now imagine playing Alan Wake 2 which is a much darker story, again a mix of Twin Peaks but also a bit True Detective (and a bit Dark City if you know that movie), where you're exploring a more psychological and introspective horror story. Now Alan is actively trying to write a story that can reshape reality, to escape from his horrors, and the subject of what is real and what isn't is constantly being played with, and then all of a sudden... Herald of Darkness starts playing and you're in the middle of a musical. It's so surreal and weird and perfect.

@@DaneBramageROCKS If you ever do try the games, consider giving Remedy's other games a try as well at some point, especially "Control" since it is set in the same shared universe as Alan Wake, with a more X-files vibe. Some extra info: When Mr Door says at the start, that the song is "about the life of Alan Wake" he means it. The entire "Herald of Darkness" is quite literally a musical recap of the events from the 1st game. Even the 4th Chapter of the song is a direct recap of the DLC Episodes that were made for the 1st game. On top of that, the character of Tom Zane, that is mentioned briefly, is an important chatacter from the lore of the Remedyverse, but I don't want to share any spoilers, in case you ever want to play it or watch it.

Man I just got to say as a writer myself, I loved Alan Wake. It has so many layers. Many talk about how it shadows the creator, but what seems less talked about, but comes across more as for writers we get it (Sam Lake was also a literature major in college, so I'm at where he was) Alan Wake 1 deals alot with writer's block. That much is spelled out, but how frustrating that block can be and trying to find some way around it. And with Alan Wake 2 the "dark Place" also stands for drafting. Alan Wake 2 had alot of trouble being made, it took them 13 years to finally release it. During that 13 years Sam Lake and his team at Remedy wrote draft upon draft upon draft, editing and changing their script. Alan's time between 1 and 2 was much the same. And my own experince going through my Bachelor's and now grad school for my master's is the same. You revise and edit constantly in hopes that SOMETHING will get published. And often what you start with won't resemble the final product. Such a good series for MANY reasons.

I’ve listened to Poets of the Fall since they released their debut album Signs of Life in 2005. They’re an alternative rock band, Old Gods is their heavier, metal alter ego band. Should you decide to dive deeper into everything they’ve created over the past two decades, here’s a heads-up: you’re about to embark on an interesting journey, because they are so incredibly versatile. If you pay attention not only to their music, but the lyrics of the songs as well, you’ll quickly notice that the name ”Poets” is 100% justified. Marko, the lead singer, has such an amazing way with words and writes such deep and beautiful lyrics, that it is fair to say that each song of theirs is poetry. Just as each of their official music videos is a piece of art. And the best part about it all is, they’re producing and publishing all of that on their own tiny label called ”Insomniac”. Marko’s background and previous experience as graphic designer certainly comes in handy here. They had offers from major labels but fortunately they were smart enough to turn them down to retain their artistic freedom and remain independent. I look forward to your future reactions to more Poets and Old Gods songs. Thank you for this one, it was fun to watch, and I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙏
