This song plays while you are fighting in a maze of big screens displaying video music. Remedy (developer) likes to mix videogames and reality in their games.

This game in particular from them was so surreal to play. There were multiple effects they used in certain scenes that made you look like you were walking in two different environments, very trippy and unique to anything I have felt before.

This segment is called "We Sing". For context, Alan is trying to write himself out of a situation and "accidentally makes a musical". It was a very particular piece that Sam Lake wanted included in the game. The thing that blows my mind with not only this segment, but also in Control on the Ashtray Maze (Take Control) is that the segments are looped with triggers. So while these songs are playing, you are "doing stuff". Puzzle solving, light exploration, and combat. And if you are struggling with a segment, the track loops and you'll never notice. It isn't until you progress that the game recognizes forward movement and carries on to the next stanza/section. Seamless.

He doesn’t “accidentally make a musical”, this is all Mr. door. Every section where Mr. door appears is outside of the rules of the dark place. He is pulling Alan into the in between (show) to teach him and guide him along.

@@Sam-vk8xdI am pretty sure Old Gods made the musical after they went to the Dark Place after Dark Ocean Summoning. Could be wrong but they are the only characters that can use the Dark place with their music (that we know about). I think Door sent them to this "moment" because Alan needed to lift his spirit.

Oh hell yea. This is one of the standout moments of the game. For some context: Alan has been trapped in a supernatural place called the Dark Place for 13 years and this musical was a recap to help him remember his life. In game you're actually going around an ever changing talk show set while this footage is playing on screens, eventually culminating in fighting off enemies by the end of it. The "house band", the Old Gods of Asgard, are some a 70's metal band from the game that have supernatural powers who know Alan and have fought against the Dark Place in the past. So in the story, it's not just a hell of a performance but it's literally rock gods using magic powers. In the games "real world" the band are a couple of 80 year old men (the guitarist with the flying V is dead, sadly) so we don't quite know why they're in the Dark Place and young again, but they're absolutely using some kind of power to help Alan. Correction: Should have said "we don't know why they're young again in the Dark Place". We know why they're there, but not why they're not old anymore.

  • @hunterschwarz4715

Actually to add on to the Old Gods part of why they are in the Dark Place, they are in there due to events later on in the game, so its possible that this is the reason they are there seeing as the Dark Place doesn't work on the usual rules on time

As amazing as the songs are out of context, they are best seen in the games themselves, where they are intermixed with set pieces that you have to play through while the music is playing.

He should have watched the gameplay version, not the music video. The track is a perfect example of diegetic music (just like the Ashtray Maze in Control - you should check out Take Control from Poets of The Fall) and is engineered that way to extend and fill in the gaps when you are running/fighting - and never skips the beat. One more cool part of trivia - the gameplay during this section kinda goes through the main beats for the first game.

Whenever I spotted any section where I seemed to be done but was still hearing new sections I'd slow it right down until it seemed to repeat so I could hear as much as possible. 😂. Best section in a game ever. Possibly my favourite game ever - much like the first, and Control (and the sadly much slept on Quantum Break). Remedy figure joint top favourite studios.

"Old Gods of Asgard" is the name Poets of the Fall use when making diagetic music for use in Remedy games, they also did two songs for the original Alan Wake game, one for the short American Nightmare Alan Wake spinoff, and one for Control. All of the songs are integrated into the gameplay and the lyrics are tied to the events of the game. In universe they were a band that was big in the 80s. The Poet and the Muse is my favorite of their songs.

The song ties directly into the main plot, since it's one of Alan's many retellings of his own story. He is trapped in a supernatural place where all types of art and creativity directly influence the environment and this musical (as they say in the beginning) is one of the consequences of his writing. The scenes you are watching in the clip appear to us as big screens while we are controlling the main character walking through an enormous stage, and is SOOOO immersive, it's amazing. The lyrics are about his life and is basically a recap of the first game. Also, the actors clearly had a lot of fun =)

This scene is the trippiest of trippy moments in the game, but it's kind of fan service too because so many people just loved seeing the characters show up in a musical (well, more like a rock opera if we're honest) for no reason.

For a little context as to what's going on, Alan here is stuck in a sort of dark place where artistic creation is manifested into a physical, very real, form. So this whole talk show thing is actually him running through a manuscript he's written.

Nice theatrical feeling to this song accompanied with metal riffs and solo. My favorite from this game got to be Dark Ocean Summoning though. In the game, its literally the song to help you summon Alan Wake out of the lake dimension and it is played while you defend the band from monsters trying to stop them. Very much the kinda game you'd like btw Geebz. Story focused, trippy as hell and a slow burn.

this is part of the gameplay and is incredibly well implemented Also the 80's "comparation" some parts sound so in the style of the Rhyme of the ancient Mariner. its a mixture of band styles, buuuuuut def it has maiden and night ranger are there. fun fact, the 3 acts of the song in total sum 12 minutes, BUT they actually recorded 25 or so so the ingeniering group can integrate the song into the gameplay, so they can loop the song in different parts according to how long the player takes to advance the segments or in which part of the song he is sttugling, so there is more to the song than just the "linear" track, its a real peace of work on the implementation too.

This band is an actual band but their name in Alan Wake 1,2 and the spin-off game Control is different This segment takes place in an alternative world named "The dark presence", looks like the real world but it can be changed through the writing of the famous writer Alan Wake and his doubleganger Mr. Scratch. This part shows Alan Wake trying to write himself a better version of the story which is slightly less horror than the game, to escape this place through Mr. Door "The host of the show", after finding out that his entire life is only a fictional character that he wrote, and he's only an actor playing himself and is invitid into this show to talk about his next book "Alan Wake: Return" The band's name is "Old Gods of Asgard", and we find out that they are actually the ancestors of the FBI agent that was investigating Alan Wake's disappearance. And at the end of the game, the band went into the lake that soaks people into this twisted world, but didn't show them getting soaked into it, but this song is the proof that they are already there. Honestly, I'm still confused about the story, and a 3rd game should explain all the details.

    1) Definitely check out the entire Alan Wake series! They are hard games (even in easy mode), and they deal with heavy topics such as loss, psychosis, depression etc. - but they are absolutely worth your while if you can deal with a bit of horror. True pieces of art! 2) The music you have listened to here is produced by Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen, a well-known Amiga tracker musician back in the day, as well as drummer of Old Gods Of Asgard. 3) The band is also known by their real life "Poets of the Fall" stage name, where they are six people. The three you see here as Old Gods of Asgard are: Markus Kaarlonen (OgoA: drums/ PotF: Synths) Marko Saaresto (OgoA: Voice, bass/ PotF: Voice, occasionally 3rd guitar) Olli Tukiainen: (OgoA: Guitar/ PotF: 1st guitar). 4) Poets of the Fall are also worth a listen. They are amazing live and in the studio. With the exception of "Clearview", all of their albums are being produced by Kaarlonen, and from him you can always expect the highest standard of audiophile quality the market has to offer at the time of release. So it's great music, great production.

Remedy Entertainment makes some of the most artistically inspired works I've ever seen The writer and game director Sam Lake writes the songs with the help of real world band Poets or the Fall. They're all heavily tied into the lore and game world. Their games also share a universe so you'll have songs that add a huge layer of depth to them. In the game "Control" there is a song from the same band that has portions that when played backwards tell you secrets of the game world and revealed information for Alan Wake 2.

The funny thing about this video is that this song is not only a part of the game by itself (as the main character has to scape from a maze while this song is playing with screens showing real life actors guiding him) but also this music video is part of the meta reallity of that universe. Meaning that We, as spectators, are concious watchers of this talk show musical as it were part of real life TV in a universe where art and reallity merge. We could also say that, in the context of the very same game, it won't be weird if someone referenced the youtube video of the musical or even this very video, as reallity is perceived in this universe in a spiral sense, sometimes knowing that the very game is a piece of art referencing the fictional events that take part on the story, but could actually be real in the context of the game, as it is a universe that reference itself in media of our very own reallity that reference a fictional universe that references a real reallity or an alternate one. They like to mess with meta universe and self referencing paradoxes, mind flexing stuff. Also The Old Gods of Asgard is a fictional 80's power metal band of some non playable characters of the game(in the game, they are seen as drunken 80 year old men who used to look like in this video) that are often referenced a the real incarnations of odin and thor in the game. They made an appearance in Alan wake 1 as non playable characters (there was also a music gameplay section in this game too) and other song of them appeared in another Remedy's game: Control. Apparently even if they age accordingly to the era they are living, the very concept of the band is a conduit of power that try to help the player during hard times, as "gods"so there were 80's song referencing current events. The band that plays the role of OGOA is called "Poets of the fall". Thanks for coming to my TED talk (Sorry for nerding out so much)

Between this, the first Alan Wake, and Control, Remedy has done some amazing work with music in their games. Edit: Because it came up after my comment, reminds me of Ritchie Blackmoore's Rainbow.

This sequence has very little gameplay happening so you can just enjoy the music, the song you will be having issues with is Dark Ocean Summoning cause the music slaps but also there's some intense gameplay happening. Maybe that's why Dark Ocean Summoning isn't as rmemebered

Alan Wake I and II are such a nice experience. The action got a bit of slack back in the day. But the story and the music is the reason to play. Skip the TV series and experience it. The song is a mixture in sound of Helloween and Queen in sound. In Alan Wake I there is a great music section as well.
