My Oma use to make this coffee cake and I only had parts of her recipe and most of my family who knew it have passed. This brought back wonderful memories, I can almost smell the aroma from your kitchen. Brought me to happy tears. A very long lost recipe I can now use. My Oma was born in 1897 so it has been a very long time! Thank you for sharing this recipe, it is amazing.

I remember this dessert, I used to buy it at a bake shop on my way home from work in NYC, many years ago. Watching the final assembly of the recipe, brought back fond memories of looking at all of the delicious confections displayed for sale. I never forgot the look of my favorite cake. The bakery closed one day over 50 years ago, and this is the first time seeing a cake from my past. Thank you for sharing this nostalgic recipe ❤️ 💖 💗 💜 💕

I know the Butterkuchen and the ones we would to Buy at a German bazaar in South Africa each year was a bit thinner and not the raw Sugar on top, so I am going to follow this recipe and half the dough into two Baking dishes but instead of sprinkling over raw Sugar actually follow through and spread Sugar and Butter mixture ontop as well (so make more of it) and then Bake it... although I have a slight suspision they used Cream and Sugar ontop because it didn't come out dry but slightly moist ontop. I will be experimenting using the above recipe until I replicate the ones from my childhood.

My family is German and i learned to bake from my grandma, who was a fabulous baker. We had a family tradition that on everyone’s birthday, we awoke to a ‘birthday table’ with cards and gifts and the best thing possible, a ‘Napf Kuchen,’ an almond pound cake that dates back at least to my grandmother’s grandma. I still make the Napf Kuchen. In fact, I had a baking business years ago and that Napf Kuchen was my best seller. These videos bring back such wonderful memories!

That's a Butterkuchen or Zuckerkuchen and it's far from beingforgotten or extinct! It is a highly traditional and favorite Cake in the west-northern Parts of Germany, like Westfalen, Niedersachsen and Ostfriesland. It's an everyday sort of cake, but it is also served at gatherings after a funeral, that's why it is also called " Beerdigungskuchen" in Eastwestfalia. The little sister of "Butterzuckerkuchen" is the "Butterstreuselkuchen", it's the same batter but with crumbles on top instead of butter flakes. They are both equally delicious when freshly served.😍

Looks great! I live in Germany and know that as Zuckerkuchen. It would be baked in a sheet pan twice the size of that form, making it only half as high. This makes for a nice cake-to-crispy-sugar-topping ratio. Oh, and before sprinkling the sugar on top, there would be small knobs of butter dotted everywhere. Yum!

My Gramma never made breads, so this is brand new to me! I'm 3rd gen American and she taught me everything I know about cooking. It was a long time before I felt comfortable making any recipe with actual measures, she taught me to bake/cook with my senses. She'd have a spoon, or tea cup, or small jar, anything along those lines, or she'd show me in my hand what it might be. She taught me humidity was of the devil lolol We live in western NY so it's ungodly humid here in summer (and damp the rest of the year haha) I've tried to write down all the recipes she showed me, with approximations of the measurements. She's say that my baking soda was never going to react the same each time I baked so I needed to watch, to smell, to touch to know how a recipe was going to work. The oven may be fine one day and funky the next, never trust your oven hahaha I make a mean sauerbraten and the 5 days of flipping and "spanking' are so worth it. "Just to let it know who's boss, Chrissy" she's tell me lolol I cannot get a pie crust as flaky and perfect as hers though, I think she withheld something from me lol. Her crusts never got soggy with a chocolate silk pie, but were tender every time. I'm grateful I don't need to cook pork chops like she had to in the 70s. I did learn the best way to make an onion gravy for them though! And I can still cook liver that doesn't take metallic (buttermilk bath and slightly undercook it) Anyone else add apples to their cold potato salad? She swore by it (I will sometimes add jicama which we didn't have back then). Her Thanksgiving dressing/stuffing had wine soaked raisins in it and was pork based. We made it from scratch hand ground the pork, celery, onions, everything. Layed the bread out to air dry two days before (all over the entire kitchen lol) Apple cider vinegar was used liberally on anything she could lol I had no idea other families didn't each canned spinach soaked in vinegar and butter! lol Sipping vinegar for your health before it was cool hahaha Most all my family is from Oberweissenbrun, my mother went back there in 2014, i think, or 2015, and found we're related to most of the town!

Instead of adding plain water to your pie crust recipe, put one tablespoon of apple cider or white vinegar into the water you're adding to the pie crust mixture. Also, if you're using all butter instead of a butter and shortening mix, the crust will be delicious, but a little heavy.

I know the recipe a little differently. Roll out the dough flat on the baking sheet, make dents in it with a teaspoon, put knobs of butter on it and sprinkle the rolled out dough with sugar. When the cake comes out of the oven, immediately spread with whipped cream. Is an old recipe from northern Germany.

Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I found this! This is so close to my recipe that my grandmother called “cucua” (not sure how she spelled it, but probably should be Kucken). Anyway, the directions my grandmother wrote have never been fully clear to me; some of her steps didn’t really make sense in the traditional baking format that I am used to. But watching this video, I’m sure my recipe is probably a variation. Thank you, thank you!

Such a pleasure to see the old fashioned way of activating real yeast. That was how I was taught to do it in the 1960s.

I’ve only seen the the yeast blocks in commercial bakeries. This used to be in the homes?

@@tammcphail1995 Yes. When I was a child in the 1950s and 1960s, it was still very common (dried yeast was relatively new in the 50s) We used to buy block yeast in little sealed blocks from the grocer.

@@tammcphail1995 and this is still in the homes of millions of bakers in Europe - Northern Europe at least, esp. Scandinavia, as well as Germany as you can see here, and in France where I currently live! You can buy it from a bakery or from some grocers, here, esp. organic grocers. The smell is lovely, so much nicer than the dried stuff.. and it’s sold in small packets, about 2oz. each, which look like stock cubes, but much larger! ;) and you use about 1oz fresh yeast vs. 2tsp dried yeast.. I hope you’ll get to try it someday, I love working with it. In a lot of recipes here, you mix the fresh yeast with a tsp of sugar before adding the liquids and it gives you a sort of thick paste, the transformation is quite impressive, from this claylike block to an aromatic paste :) Best wishes!
