One tip I learned about cleaning burners is to sand the face of the burners with 120 grit sand paper. Nothing too heavy. The face of the burners is the ground path for the flame sensor. Any carbon or dirt on the face won't allow the micro amp current to flow through the flame sensor to ground.

I know people must appreciate having a professional who actually can repair their unit. Too many people just want to sell a new unit and don't even try to diagnose a problem. Thanks for all you do . I live in Texas so don't have to deal with severe cold -- most years! I am watching because my gas furnace just quit -- three days after it had its annual cleaning. Now waiting on home warranty contractor to advise on unit. He said metal induction fan failed and he found crack in heat exchanger! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Honest guy. Charges for parts and labor. Always attemps to fix it no matter how old your unit is. Who has 20 thousand dollars for a new unit? There are a lot of crooks out here in the hvac trade.

I do the same thing. I spend a lot of extra time explaining things to customers. Sometimes an hour or more. It always gets me more work, sometimes really big jobs. It's so important to build an honest relationship with customers.

The major issue is the furnace is in a closet, someone did the same thing at my grandmas house for the 2nd and 3rd floor ac unit when there’s cubbies in the attic that would’ve been a better option, it has a slow refrigerant leak in the line set and they pretty much told her wait til it dies to move it. 5 years later still going just needs a charge every spring

The cap provides a phase shift to create a rotating magnetic field to spin the motor. The sizing balances out the current through the windings.

Kind of reminded me when working on my gas dryer, the glow wire lit but the pilot would not stay on. Took the gas valve out of the dryer, after checking everything, I found a ball of lint in the tube leading to the pilot from the gas valve. That was 30 years ago, still runs.

This furnace is an upflow furnace installed upside down. Huge liability! Looks like an early Goodman/Janitrol. . A downflow furnace would have the burners near the floor and the inducer above the burners. The rollout switches would be above the burners, or on the sides, not on the bottom. Many times the flue pipe comes through the blower compartment and exhausts through the top, or the blower compartment is recessed behind the vent pipe. Unbelievable.

The flame rollout switch would never get hot enough to shut down the furnace. Open burners could scorch that wood door, cause a fire or an explosion. How the heck does this thing breathe? Open burners draw in room air for combustion. That furnace should have never been installed in that cramped closet. Unsafe at any temperature.

I thought the closet door was louvered but it's not. Goodman supplier tried to send me an up flo to turn upside down on a gas heat application. Made them find a down draft wasn't gonna answer to my customer for that.

I like converting old downflow mobile home furnaces to Goodman downflow 96%'ers. Just take the PVC vent pipe right up inside the double wall and out the top of the cap. Screw and glue a witches cap on the penetration, done. Thanks for the video, Steve!

In California you need to have vents to attic and/or crawl space/basement for combustion air. Need several inches of clearance on all sides.

At 6:25 The chimney needs a down draft damper because if you let that inducer run backwards all the time, it will need to be replaced prematurely. Plus if the water heater ducts at the same place and a down draft is present, you will get carbon monoxide build up when furnace is not running. Only good part about seeing an inducer run backwards is that you know the chimney is not blocked.

The capacitor boosts the start circuit on the blower motor, or start winding.

My smart gas valve became dumb about a week ago. Fortunately the company I was under contract for a new furnace on Feb 8th came out on Sunday morning and determined that the whole furnace needed replaced. I got a call from them the next day, they moved my install date up to Thu Jan 20th. I'm onto a new carrier furnace now and have heat!!

How can that install possibly pass code for combustion air requirements? The combustion intake is right against the door. Plus, is the return air drawing inside the closet too? Maybe CO into the return and flame rollout! 5 star master keyboard tech here. I must be missing something, but that seems crazy mama!

Do You have to cover the radiator on Your truck to get the heater to work like the Big truck drivers?

the capacitor is to offset the effect of motor drawing too much current when it starts, unless the motor has soft start. The closest analogy is it acts like a buffer tank or anti hammer valve.

That furnace isnt installed right. Usually all 80% downflows have the burners on the bottom and inducer on top.

Houston we have ignition.

I have the exact same furnace except it's not upside down or in a closet. I have replaced ever single part on it except the gas valve which is in the mail as I speak. It won't stay lit as well. Everyone lights as expected but when the fan kicks on the flames go out.. the fan runs for a bit and the furnace relights itself right when the fan shuts off because it's cooled down .. it lights up.. fan kicks on.. flame goes out. This happens 4/5 times before it stays lit. I replaced flame sensors, caps, the whole circuit board, inducer motor, inducer sensor switch, ignitor, cleaned my burners... Everything except the gas valve. I know I could have replaced the furnace for about the same cost but I now have a new furnace once I replace the gas valve.

Eventually the motor will sit there and burn itself up if it goes bad.
