Old English Song: The English Varangians - A New England | The Skaldic Bard

Ойын-сауық

Here is another song I wrote and performed in Old English, this time about the Anglo Saxon warriors who were forced to leave England after the Norman Conquest in 1066 and seek their fortunes abroad. The events are based off the Icelandic saga Játvarðar Saga.
The Englishmen sailed down through the Straits of Gibraltar and onward to the Mediterranean, retaking lands for Christendom as they went. They came to Constantinople which was under siege by foreign foes and vowed to aid Emperor Alexios. This was the start of the Anglo-Saxon branch of the Varangian Guard. As time went on, some decided to find a place to start a new colony, which they deemed Nova Anglia, or New England, somewhere in modern day Crimea. Emperor Alexios said that if they could reconquer those lands, they could keep it - and that they did. They named their cities London and York, among others, and maintained their English traditions and language for centuries. This is my attempt at sharing their story.
The melody for this one is actually one my dear brother and I wrote together a good 13 years ago. We never did anything with it, so I thought to make the most of it now.

It's not a theory, it's fact, there's lots of historical written evidence to attest to it. It just isn't widely known about in the English speaking world; as with everything Anglo-Saxon, it gets drowned out and overshadowed by all things Viking. You're only likely to have heard about it if you're an Eastern Roman Empire or Anglo-Saxon history buff.

Great Song and interesting parts of history remaining uknown to most of the people. As a Greek, i always wondered why people focus only in Ancient Greek history and turn their back to the Medieval and Modern times. Anglo Saxons and Norsemen trully honored their oath to the Roman King, many times with their lives, even if as mercenaries could just leave the battle when everything was lost. A song about the Great Greek-Roman Emperor and General Nikiphoros Fokas the II. Thank you for your music and history sharing.

The various khanates in the region raided and sold many people who inhabited Crimea (Russia and Ukraine in general were heavily depopulated by these slave raids) into slavery. That being said the slavic/turkic populations were larger even without these raids and so the English were absorbed/bred out. The same happened to the Crimean Goths although it’s believed they or at least their language lasted longer (some accounts say they were still around until the 18th century).

They are a group of Anglo-Saxons that left England after William the Conqueror of Normandy invaded England. They sailed away looking to raid and become mercenaries and won battles against the Muslims in Spain, then helped the Byzantines win a victory, so the emperor gave them land in Crimea. After 1066 the Varangians were almost entirely Anglo-Saxon until the end of the empire. They were only mainly Norse for the first 100 years or so.

They have absolutely no relation in there except they trying to invade in there as they have done in the whole planet. But they have only losses as far as i know in Russian lands. Now, as to the other thing U say that the Varangians were Saxons, i know that the maybe only writer historian or all of them who wrote about the Varangians & who were they, both in Russia, and in Greek & in fact anyone who did write reliably about them, states the fact that they where Vikings.
