You should watch a performance of this titled “Maynard and the fan, don’t push it”. A fan jumps on stage and walks up to Maynard. Maynard does a judo hip toss, takes the guys back and sinks in a rear naked choke, singing the whole time. Eventually transition to the mount and continues to ride the fan for the duration of the song. Truly something to behold lol

I think everyone needs to appreciate the fact that this album is 24 years old and we’re all still just as happy today to enjoy the pure complexity and ingenuity of this music. What a great time to be alive for sure.

If you’re a Zeppelin fan, then for sure listen to Tools cover of No Quarter. It’s mind blowing.

A musical brother of mine said that "No Quarter" had long been a favorite Zeppelin song for him. Then, driving home late in the rain one night, the local college radio station played Tool's cover version. It was new to him, completely blew him away, and legend says he is still driving to this day.

I couldn't agree more. That album blew me away. They recorded the bass line in analog at Abbey road studios And it is so smooth and powerful throughout the whole album. Absolutely a 21st century masterpiece.

Excellent track. Can't wait for you to get to the Salival live version. They re-interpret the song musically and it gives a completely different experience. I'd say it leans more into their Eastern influences

I love the live version of "Jerk-off" from their first album - Opiate. Nobody ever wants to react to that song, unfortunately... That scream in that track, and that was live performance. Perfect!

Now do the Salival version of Pushit. It’s a totally different arrangement and vibe. So much softer and intimate, and also brutal at times. I think you’ll really like it after hearing this original version.

on Ænima his vocals were really powerful, Eulogy, Third Eye.. etc. Although some of my favorite vocals are also in Undertow - Bottom and Flood.. And of course The Grudge, Ticks & Leeches are up there among his best vocals.

I have never had the experience to see them live. I am working hard and saving money to see them in Sept. For louder than life. To see them live would be a dream come true. The songs are genious to say the least.

Once you’re done dissecting the music, I recommend revisiting Maynard’s lyrics and vocal patterns. Even just on your own time. It’s an entirely separate rabbit hole that can not be set aside

11:00 my thoughts exactly. I love that someone else so appreciates the way their bass can completely sway the ocean of mood behind the repetitive guitar riffs that Adam plays. Love peoples reaction to hearing Tool for the first time, then needing to hear more decades after the songs were released. Your body and facial expression are exactly how we all reacted the first time we heard them. Your Analysis is great and genuine intrigue brings in the fans and views. A band that disappeared for 13 yearsish and then releases an album that reaches No.1 is a testament to the depth of this band and their talent and the reason for so many dedicated fans. Im 44 and got stoned to these guys so many times in my teens lol

His little laugh followed by “wow” is the way I still finish most of their songs and I’ve heard them 100s of times.

This is by far my favorite tool song. Hearing you break it down the way you did makes me appreciate tool that much more. Which is hard to do considering they are my favorite band of all time and Maynard is my unnatural obsession🖤🖤

Danny is great at tricking your sense of rhythm. I think you'll really dig the song Aenima. Just to hear someone say "Fk L. Ron Hubbard" The song is about California falling off the face of the earth after an earthquake. "See you down in Arizona Bay" ala Bill Hicks. Great input brother

They are masters of building tension and then releasing it in the most epic way.

@John yeah that's what I thought at first too, like I would listen to it even 4 times, and don't get me wrong, there are some great moments, the music is great.. But as you said the lack of Maynard's legendary screams, and also the build up and there is no explosion, if you know what I mean like the climax, it only always goes on and on the instrumental sections, and it doesn't lead to some grand finale like Third Eye ending, I cannot say this album is a masterpiece..

@John I think it was a conscious choice for Maynard to dial it back and enhance the music in subtler ways. The album, to me, showcases Adam Jones in particular in a way no other Tool album does and I appreciate it for that and many other reasons.

I first heard Pushit 9 months before this album came out. I was at the 3rd annual Primus New Years Eve show December 31 1995/Jan 1 1996, and Tool played an > hour long set as the 2nd opening act. After like 3 songs, Maynard asks on the mic "You guys don't mind if we play some new stuff, right?" and then they launch into AEnima songs. As I noted at the start, this show was literally 9+ months before the album was released. So, those of us at that show were literally some of the first people, anywhere, to hear those songs. Still my favorite Tool song, and even after all this time, still the best concert I've ever been to. (Because even after 1+ hours of Tool, including the new stuff, we still had something like 1.5-2 hours worth of Primus still to go yet to ring in the new year.)

I love how Tool can make very simple sections so impactful and sound more complex than they are. Some of it is engineering, but mostly genius arrangement.

Definitely the best reactor on KZread. I greatly appreciate that you dive into what makes a song great from your unique perspective. Every time I see a new video by you it’s like finding a jewel while sifting through the sand. Keep it up, I’m loving your work. And please do Tool’s Third Eye for a mystical experience.

You need to hear the live reimagined version of this song on Salvial. It's magic.

Tool - Disposition Reflection Triad

When you talk about how you view the vocals as an instrument, and the singer as a musician using that instrument... Thats literally exactly how maynard talks about his job as a singer, with those exact words. he knows he needs to make his vocals work with the music just as much as the music needs to work with his vocals, its all part and parcel. You and maynard seem to have a very similar ideology about what a bands singer is bringing to the table in relation to the rest of the band.

Check out Rick Beato if you haven't already. He has a series called What Makes This Song Great?. Very detailed break down of many different rock songs. Does a couple of Tool tracks.

You need to listen to the Salival live version of this now that this is fresh in your head and hear how they change the first half for the show 🤗
