The best part about this track is Polyphia didn't slow everything down and play simple rhythm guitar to accomodate vocals, they just got a vocalist who could keep up with their insanity. I love this one more with every listen.

I agree. It's the frenetic pace of this song that makes it interesting to me especially with Sophia Black's cadence matching the guitars.
Since they are impossible to define, Polyphia is now their OWN genre. 5 years from now, you'll hear music types, when asked what style they play, they'll answer - "we're a Polyphia band"

From the first time I heard Primus in the late 80s I thought the same about them.its taken 30+ years for something as unique to occur again and I feel privileged to be able to witness 2 such groups in my life. I didn't expect this track and it challenged and delighted me and I cant wait to hear where Polypia are going

Sophia black only has 1 EP and the rest of the stuff she's done were basically just voice overs for video games so she's fairly new. This was a beautiful introduction to the world for her.
According to the band, Sophia came in the studio and hit that alphabet guitar run note for note. I'd love to hear an isolated vocal track for this song.

Yeah exactly, i don't really know how to feel about this one but it's still catchy as fuck and I'll listen to it over until i figure it out lol. Sophia Black is a phenomenal songwriter. Her song Kissing was the first I hear, and I've been a huge fan ever since.
Was hoping to see you do this one. Totally agree- Polyphia is all about expanding the art. Can’t wait for the new album!
you mentioned their last release was playing god, _which means you missed neurotica_
No one is pushing pop music like polyphia. They are really giving power and emphasis back to the musicians vs rooms of guys in suits. They really need that one collab with a huge artist that will put them over the top in the mainstream.
Sophia Black is amazing! I really recommend the track Real Shit
I love polyphia so much
noone knew who she was... deserves every bit of the success!

I agree. I definitely feel like this is an evolution of Polyphia. How instead of staying one note and continuing to be just an instrumental band, I feel like they took a step back on the guitar or even just the instrumental to let a vocal in. Because all of her parts very easily could’ve just been guitar. I’m so excited to see more from their new record.
That look at the camera made day, along with the thumbnail 😂
Unprocessed is another band similar to polyphia with vocals they've actually done a song with polyphia that would get your brain going lol
Speaking of seeing what their daw looks like, Tim actually does videos on how they made their songs! I believe he's done one on G.O.A.T, O.D, and Playing God. It's a super interesting look I to the bands creative process and it's great for producers who're just starting out. It'd be really cool if you watched em on the channel and gave your own insight into it.
Appreciate you and your takes so much!
Love hearing your take on this awesome tune!

Loved this reaction! Just peeped the track a few days ago so this was a welcome surprise
Very intellectual, mature, detailed explanations. Love it.
I dig this track. Not really my aesthetic, but this is just different stuff. I admire Tim and the boys' panache. They are going to put themselves in everybody's ear, come heck or high water!
In my opinion, unprocessed followed a similar trajectory from prog Metal to prog-pop. Worth checking out some of their newer stuff
I agree, great to see them branch out and try some different genres, etc. -- Just found this channel of yours. Looks like a good one!
Im a diehard polyphia fan, but even in their best (new levels new devils) you could notice that their style was getting a bit repetitive, to this day, even after listening to that album tons of times i cant really distinguish some tracks apart I love how fresh this new polyphia is and i cant wait for more

Prefer inferno and Champaign to anything from NLND but I understand where your coming from regardless
Like you, I hope this will inspire a new generation of musicians... The industry suffered from this washing down, feeding basic stuff repeatedly to the population so that they demand more of it while keeping things dumb... Had the chance to group up with many different genres, exploring and being in contact thanks to family, neighbours and friends and lately musicians too... And I try to pass it down the line to those around me and specially my 6yo daughter... She will chose, but so far she kinda asks for the roots every once in a while.. She already engaged with polyphia with me too thx to your hints 😅
Everyone seems to forget that “So Strange” has vocals.

Funny thing about polyphia, they started as a Tech Death/Deathcore band with Vocals WAY BACK THEN.. Then they transformed to instrumental shreddy stuff, but in New Levels, New Devils in 2018 they found their sound in that mix of hip hop, pop, guitar and this album looks like its continuing to evolve EVEN MORE.
I want that poster, wonder if he can share where they got it lol. Great video also
Very bizarre and different for polyphia but its growing on me to be honest haha

This song is so cheeky
I love that Polyphia is willing to play on this. It's like technical pop music and it's just a fun song. Oh and I had to come back and add this but, Polyphia could be a smoking modern funk band if they choose to.
You should look at Lorna Shore's new song Pain Remains 1- dancing like flames! It's a really good song with great melodies.

The "tabs" you saw at the bottom was actually a mock guitar hero style game look. Basically how the music in guitar hero is represented a 5 button guitar controller. Not real tabs that you could use on a guitar. Still really cool though.

On the topic of not offending anyone of Polyphia, it turns out Tim doesn't like when people call his music Math Rock. I got to attend a Q&A session with Polyphia and someone asked why he decided to start playing Math Rock and Tim had an offended look on his face and said that their music is all 4/4 and by definition cannot be Math Rock.
@joshshultz1250

On a related note... I don't really understand why people consider their music prog either. I feel like at some point the meaning of that genre got lost on people. Like, each song individually imo is in no way prog. The band as a whole's catalog on the other hand has evolved quite a bit but it's not like each part is building off the last in their songs like a typically prog band. It's all 4/4 and mostly repeating themes.
@auradmg
Жыл бұрын
@@joshshultz1250 I think it's "progressive" in that it is actively pushing the art form in new directions, that's why progressive music originally got its name. It doesn't have to be 9/16 and polyrhythms to be prog, that's just a common feature in progressive music.

I mean that’s just to do with time signatures. You can have “mathy” guitar too. As long as they keep finger tapping/playing guitar like a piano and keep their songs under 4 mins they will keep getting called math rock IMO
I’m here for prog pop
The tabs are a Guitar Hero reference.
Sir, you're co af.
might be where the drugs wore off LMAO
So that section of tabs you mentioned wasn't actually tabs, from what I understand Tim commissioned someone from the guitar hero community to chart out the song in game to play and then used the recorded game footage. I know the full chart is on youtube and I want to shout out the clone hero community for their awesome work and Tim's inclusion of the game in his song!

But that's the antithesis of pop mixing. Maybe on a slower whispery thing but this type of stuff the fans typically want vocals front, center and loud.
the lyrics are trash and ruin the song for me and it also informs the delivery, but musically it's a sign of potential going forward with a pop style that has vocals.

What's wrong with them? Sounds like pretty standard pop lyrics to me, fits with the style. New Levels New Devils had a bit of vocals in a couple of songs as well, it keeps things fresh
I’m sorry but this song is stylistically a huge miss. Can we stop pretending like saying the alphabet at 140 BPM is creative? Polyphia has some god tier guitar work…but this song just isn’t it.

You sound like a pretentious metalhead who thinks only 16th notes played in rapid succession can be considered "God tier guitar work" not even gonna lie. It's always the least creative people on the internet who have the absolute most to say about this stuff I swear. Fella probably doesn't even play guitar and talks like he knows what is and isn't good guitar playing. Actually comedic. Who am I more inclinded to listen to ? Steve Vai who has stated Tim's one of his favorite modern guitarists ? Or some random in a KZread comment section with an opinion and probably doesn't even play/make music ? lmao

I’d say that the goal of the simple lyrics is in itself the goal, as an experimental piece like this makes it the priority to match the atmosphere and vibes of each genre. If it’s lyrical complexity you’re looking for, JID or Aesop Rock have some excellent work, but I think the fact that this is hyperpop prog metal in of itself is a testament to its creativity
