The statement that some didn't surrender for decades...I remember when one finally decided to surrender when I was in high school in 1974.

For anyone wondering why the 77th went through TWO years of training in the States, it's because of the lack of shipping. MANY divisions didn't go overseas until the buildup for D-Day because why ship people to England if they are just going to sit and, in the meantime, you have to use precious cargo ships to feed them there? Keep them in the States while you send all the equipment first so you can mate men to material just before D-Day. Same for the Pacific Theatre... One reason the US soldiers were so good once in combat was because for hundreds of thousands of them they trained, trained, trained for f'ing months and months and months before going overseas.

@@bigkevreactsas an aside, in modern day military forces, the only group that gets two years of training are special forces units for each of the branches. This information is via a few different former military reactors who were trying to find a modern equivalent to the amount of training these men had.

What america did was unintentionally train the first special forces, just as an entire division. I only say that because the only training that requires 2 years of is special forces

The U.S. had a really bad habit of building up a military when needed, only to liquidate it almost entirely after the conflift ended. This has caused major ripple effects over time, in my opinion. This has lessened quite a bit after World War 2, which is good overall.

Old dudes in the military is more common....it's called special forces, they just go through basic young and when they have their shit together, they then send them for more advanced/intense training across the country and use those guys as the modern day problem solvers lol

Not a platoon. A platoon is about 50 men. This was a division approximately 15,000 men.
