Oh, my. What a super-beautiful and joyful routine! She puts today's top gymnasts to shame.

one of my favorite routines ever. the only gymnast i've seen who genuinely appears as though she loves what she's doing.

All the grace, all the difficulty, but what always gets me is her smile. When gymnastics looks fun to the athlete, it makes you feel something different, special.

There’s so much to appreciate about her but I just love those opening few moments of the routine where the first thing she does is change her facial expressions. It’s not just that radiant smile but she’s using her eyes and almost coyly winking at the crowd before she gets into the choreography. I love that. Very few gymnasts ever managed to achieve that level of detail in their expression. Love her

Amazing! Beautiful! I never get tired of Oksana Omelianchik's floor routine. That's ARTISTIC gymnastic.
SHE WAS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GRACEFUL AND TECHNICAL GYMNAST THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. BRAVO OKSANA!

She actually did the tripletwist punch front at the 1987 Worlds, and she actually demonstrated a triple twist punch front to prone position at a 1987 USA vs USSR competition. Its here on youtube.

She was alternate in '88, but only because her grip broke during USSR Cup (Olympic Trials), causing her to fall off bars. The error was not a consistency problem; I'd call it "equipment failure." She was better than both Shevchenko & Baitova, & should have been allowed to compete in Seoul. But for some reason I'll never understand, the top coaches made her alternate. They then forced her into retirement in '89, even though she wanted to continue. It was heartbreaking...

I agree with you bro...except for that part where you say "gymnasts of her time...".... That´s not enough Oskana was not only, and clearly, one of the very best of her time, she is one of the greatest names in the HISTORY of gymnastics! :))

I agree 200%!!!! Shevchenko was way past her prime in 88 and I never really thought Baitova was any more than average for a Soviet gymnast. We have yet to see a gymnast like Omelianchik since her reign.

I never ever rated Shevchenko or Baitova. This girl was a rare bird indeed-a Soviet gymnast with real personality and charisma. And a real joy for performing.Just beautiful and the virtuosity and presentation....no more words needed.

I wholeheartedly agree-why Shevchenko was on the team is beyond me, and even Baitova was very average.I think Oksana had a growth spurt after these competitions, and never really got back to her best, but she still deserved a place on the team more than those two. So unfair. Is it true she was forced into retirement???Thats so crap and unfair!!

@TuesdayPillow Do you know why she decided to change her first tumbling pass from a pike-full to immediate back handspring to a Triple twist punch front in 1987? Was she injured or couldn't do the full in anymore?
@nicki44612 жыл бұрын
@Jameshistory Because you can't really do the same first tumbling pass your entire career.. A triple twist punch front is an incredibly difficult move (I believe she was one of the very first to do it), so it is right that she should perform such an impressive tumble instead of a full-in, which is much more common (but of course still difficult).

sorry but she was too weak already by the time 1988 came by. Her skill level and consistency were just not there.
