    I lived in Ft. myers/ Cape Coral for 23 years. I’ve always wanted to take that trip in my Boston Whaler, but sadly never did. I’ve moved back to Michigan 4 years now, who knows, maybe will have a second chance to accomplish it. Great video thanks for posting !

    Thank you for posting your remarkable journey through the Okeechobee waterway. Rolland Martin probably waved from his marina as you went by, he’s such a great guy. People might not realize how massive lake Okeechobee is in surface mass, it’s actually the 10th largest lake in the USA. Imagine all the bull sharks and gators you passed by that were hidden within mother nature’s cloak. With today’s outboard technology this journey could be done on one tank of fuel. Love the Pathfinder by the way. Stay awesome guys! 🇺🇸☝️

    I boat on the inland waterways in Ky & Tn. I take trips like this to Nashville. Down to Pickwick. The scenery that so many boaters don’t get to see. Cause there boating experiences are from the boat ramp. To the beach. All of about 10 miles round trip. Thanks for documenting your trip.

    Thanks for sparking a wonderful memory. I’m a former mechanical/electrical installation technician for Hatteras Yachts. One of the last projects we had before the closing of the High Point NC plant was the completion of the redesigned (for ‘98) 60’ convertible. Final assembly was done in Bradenton Fl, where we installed the fly bridge and tuna tower. Launched the boat there and pretty much followed the same route you did. Once we hit the Atlantic Ocean we would head to Ft Lauderdale to make it to the ‘98 winter boat show. Thanks for sharing your ride with us.👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸

    The Pathfinder is a Bay Boat. Its a cross between a flats boat and a shallow V hull. I can fish the flats for snook, redfish and sea trout in a 11 inches of water but also go 40 miles offshore for pelagics, grouper and snapper. Plus, I can take 4 divers and 12 tanks out for spearfishing. I’ve had this boat for 21 years. It’s been on hundreds of fishing trips, produced thousands of pounds of fish, hundreds of dives and just ran across the state of Florida and back. In 21 years it has never failed me. Granted, I follow strict maintenance procedures. If you take care of your gear your gear will take care of you. It may leave a wild wake in your opinion but I’ll take this wild wake makin, fish slayin, bikini droppin, party barge anywhere and everywhere!

    Thanks great vid. Old friend from when I lived onboard the Karen-Ann on Miami River did the "Baby Loop" up the parts of the intercoastal waterway, Atlantic across the Okeechobee waterway down the Gulf around the Keys and back to Miami. Some people do this as a preview or practice run with hope and aspiration to do the Big loop. Big Loop is up Atlantic, through Great lakes down Mississippi, Gulf of Mexico around Florida and back. My friend Vicente and his wife found the baby loop a great adventure and once in a life time wonderful experience and enough to inform them that the "Big Loop" was not form them. For these undertaking you need a good boat, planning and time. Maybe when I retire if I go back to living on a boat I will do the Baby Loop and who knows from there, though something tells me that would be enough. With time on your side it seems it could be quite a leisurely little cruise for lovers of the water and the Sea very much NOT like getting on a floating condominium and stuffing your face or what people call "going on a cruise". If I remember correctly Vince's boat was a 30 something Marine Trader Trawler with twin Ford/Leman diesels, perfect little toy for that kind of game.

They include things like climbing mountains, hiking around the Grand Tetons, high alpine trout fishing, ship wreck diving, etc. one video, the Mt Whitney video, actually has multiple rescues off the mountain. I personally consider my other videos more entertaining and interesting than this boat across Florida video. But for some reason this video is by far my most popular with over a hundred thousand views! It’s crazy. I’m not even a monetized KZreadr. I make my videos for me. They’re just my home movies. I’ve made this trip, from Ft Myers to as far as Indiantown. It’s pleasant, if not a little boring. There isn’t much to see in between Ft Myers and Clewiston, and the locks are just slow. And of course, the Army COE built this system, and it’s the reason we have so many environmental disasters along the waterway and in the Gulf.

A 30’ sailboat has a draft of 5’-5.5’. So you should be good to go. Just stay in the middle of the rivers and canals.

    Boring Illinois! I’m afraid I’d have to disagree. Adventure is everywhere. You could boat from Chicago north across Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island or Chicago south down the Illinois River to the Mississippi River to St Louis. Both trips are approximately 300 miles. Not to mention you have a few state forests that are great for backpacking. Illinois like every state has great outdoor spaces.

    They started to cut a canal across north Fl many yrs ago, the “ cross Fl barge canal”. Then , after millions spent on staring both ends and putting in locks, they decided it wasn’t a good idea because it would turn Fl into an island, and may put salt water into the aquifer. It was abound on in place and now there are two ends and no middle, and the locks were decommissioned, after they redirected the withlacoochee river.

We turned around in the Atlantic, headed home and took out at Horton Park ramp where we launched from. After all, that’s where my truck was parked.

We were just doing it to do it. We took our time with no agenda enjoying the Florida landscape and engineering of the many bridges and locks. You can easily get across in one day. Just be at the first lock at 0700, average 30knts and be to the last lock by 1600.

    great video, thank you for sharing. I have some questions that you probably already answered... 154 miles and 5 locks each way, did you encounter any significant area of slow speed that slowed you down? Each lock will take you about 30 minutes to go through? I am planning to go from Stuart to Sanibel, can i make it one day if leave by 6am? Any recommendation on safety, etc.? Again, great video

  • @stevesalter1138

    @stevesalter1138

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes, there are several slow zones. However, if you are at the first lock when it opens in the morning and cruise at 30knts or faster when permitted and don’t stop to eat you will get through the last lock before it closes. It can easily be done in one day. The Army Corps of Engineers manages the waterway and the locks. You need to check their website for any closures. You don’t want to get all the way to last lock and discover it’s closed for maintenance. I would get the phone number of each lock and call them to confirm there’s no closures. Also, the website states the locks close at 5:00pm with the last “passage” at 4:30pm. It is true they close at 5:00 but if the lock operator doesn’t think he can get you through due to an extreme tide (a 14 foot lift) can close early. Therefore, do not get to the last lock later than 4:00pm. The time to get through each lock varies. If the lift or drop is one foot it’s significantly faster than if it’s 10 feet. Also, you may arrive right after they closed the gate to lift someone else through. If that person was going the same way you were going you’ll now have to wait for their lift then the drop back down to get you. There are variables that can make a lock passage take over an hour. Recommendations, stay in the middle of the canal avoiding the sides, bring a couple pair of work gloves to handle the dock lines through the locks, be prepared to spend the night on your boat if you get stuck between locks. What if a lock closes one hour before your arrival due to a malfunction. You might get stuck on your boat over night if you can’t get to a marina and Uber to a hotel. I hope you have a great journey.

    Naw, the skinny kid with the metrosexual beard was brought along to handle dock lines while going through the Locks. When he wasn’t handling dock lines he spent considerable time hiding behind me and the helm, curled up in the beanbag chair in order to escape the cold. The only part of this video he’s responsible for is crashing my drone into my face as I mistakenly let him take the helm for a moment and he ran the boat forward right as I launched it off the bow.

    I can’t remember how many slow zones, several, about 12ish, but none of them are too long. Yes, you can do this in one day. Just be at the first Lock at 0700, average 30kts and be to the last Lock before 1600. The Army Corps of Engineers website says the Locks close at 1630. This is not accurate. They can close earlier. Call them if you’re not going to be there by 1600.

    One way is 154 miles. My 22ft Pathfinder boat with a 150hp HPDI Yamaha Outboard used 45 gallons of fuel and one gallon of oil. I used Google Maps and the Army Corps of Engineers Okeechobee Waterway website to plan the trip. We stayed one night at Roland Martin Marina and Resort in Clewiston and one night at Pirate’s Cove Resort and Marina in Stuart. No, we were not setup for camping because we weren’t going to camp. There are enough hotels along the way. However, if you wanted to camp or sleep on your boat those are options. Bugs are bad at night year round depending on where you are. You must be prepared to deal with mosquitoes and no-see-ups. If you get stuck at night in an area where the bugs are really bad you’d better have the proper gear or you will be miserable! It’s Florida, a subtropical environment. A mosquito head net and a full body bug suit are what I had just in case but never used.

    did you see any underwater hurricane debris that could have been disastrous or close call ?

  • @stevesalter1138

    @stevesalter1138

    Жыл бұрын

    No. There are some boats resting on the bottom outside of the channel that are clearly visible and not a threat to navigation. There were no significant hazards from the hurricane. More importantly, the Okeechobee Waterway’s website states the Locks close at 5pm and take last boats at 4:30pm. This is not accurate. The Lock operator has discretion based on water level change as it relates to time. It takes longer to lift you 10 feet than 1 foot. So they may close before 4:30pm. If you think you’ll arrive at a Lock close to 4:30 call them to confirm their closing time. Hope that helps. Enjoy your journey.

    Your original question was tough to answer. You asked “What’s the height clearance? And what’s the draft throughout?” Over the 154 mile crossing there are 26 bridges, 5 Locks and 9 bodies of water. I assumed you meant what’s the lowest bridge and the shallowest depth someone would encounter. I was in a small boat and these numbers didn’t matter to me because I knew people take large sailboats with 40ft+ masts and 5ft drafts and others take 40ft cabin cruisers. I knew if they were crossing in those size vessels my 22ft center console wasn’t going to have a problem. When you asked your question I had no idea what the answer was. I simply googled it. It appears the lowest bridge is the Port Mayaca Railroad Lift Bridge at approximately 49ft and the shallowest depth is 8ft. But as with all navigation don’t rely on any one source.

    @@stevesalter1138 Real good answer. I see some tall sailboats in the water in areas where I don't think they can get out of. Do sailers drop a mast to get in and out at times? Just a rhetorical question, no need to answer. I know someone would do whatever it takes to store something and whatever to put it back together when it's time.

    The Okeechobee waterway is an environmental disaster that has an incredible negative impact on both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. On the gulf the frequency of red tide has tripled, many of the beaches are so badly effected, that people can't visit them due to respiratory issues. All the chemicals, nutrients and other crap used in farming is getting pumped directly into the ocean.
