After a little while I actually found hipfiring in Insurgency *easier* than other games-the bullets go to where the barrel of your gun is pointing, not to the center of the screen. I don't really know how point shooting works in real life, but here it lives up to the name: in close quarters, I shoot by pointing my gun to where I want to land the shot. It seems pretty natural for humans to figure out where a 3D object is pointing in 3D space, certainly a lot more natural than figuring out the exact center of the screen without a marker! It took a bit of time to adjust to this just because ≈every other game does it differently, but it works really well after that.

  • @eadbert1935

    @eadbert1935

also, if you're shooting multiple times, it's not that unrealistic you might adjust your fire because you get some indication of where the first bullet went. i don't know how visible the shots are in insurgency, but just from seeing where shots impact you can adjust as a person who's never held a gun, that's how i play paintball nearly at the level of my friends who actually did get some gun training.

I definitely prefer less HUD elements, but for Apex, I have to argue that almost all the HUD elements are required pieces of information. Of course, having the option to toggle certain elements would help a lot, but I think the type of game it is, with a lot of cooldown mechanics and battle royale resource management, with quick information about your teammates' statuses, I think the crowded HUD is excusable and almost necessary.

I agree, I have always disliked the amount of space the hud in Apex takes but you really do need all of that information. I feel like there is probably some way that they could have designed it so that it didn't take up as much space though and provide a same amount of information. They all take up a lot more room than they need to imo as there is a decent amount of empty space in each element and the elements thst are just displaying that you don't have any heals etc. Should be hidden or have the option to be hidden unless you have those items. Could also do better with the minimap by making smaller and less colorful, don't think a just radar minimap would work.

I remember once going back to Half Life 2 after playing a bunch of shooters that had complicated/busier HUDs (including objective markers) and thinking to myself, "Man, am I gonna be able to know where to go?" Once the game got going, I actually appreciated the minimalist HUD (crosshairs, ammo counter, and health bar), and the level design was good enough for me to always have an idea of where to go without big glaring signs. Sometimes less is more, and if I make a shooter (which I hope to do one day), I'd like to go a minimalist route.

Sandstorm HUD (or lack thereof) makes sense when you consider the type of game sandstorm is. Not to mention, the HUD IS there, but it is hidden behind a key/interaction. For instance: You wanna see the map? Press tab. You wanna see how much ammo you have left? Hold the reload button. You want a "crosshair? Use a laser sight. Personally I love sandstorm HUD since it gives you the Info you want when you need it and it doesn't constantly obstruct your screen with info you might not need most of the time.

Sandstorm sounds like a well-designed game. Even battlefield1 cannot compare to that kind of design, when all you really NEED to have on-screen is a minimap and your bullet count. I wish more games strove for a minimalistic HUD design, because it really does add to the experience when you're not surrounded by a bunch of information you don't need to see at all times. Hell, even bullet count isn't that important, you can more or less get a "feel" for how much ammo you have remaining by how much you have been shooting.

I like my HUD customizable. Many games allow you to change the HUD size in general. PlanetSide2 allows you to change the size of the minimap. Then, depending on the style of the game, knowing more or less adds to the flavor of the game. A more realistic game would have less info, while a more fun/casual game would have an element showing your ammo for example. For the minimap again, it makes more sense to have it round instead of square, add the compass to it instead of having a huge compass bar at the top of the screen, and seeing a map of the place instead of a blank background really helps getting a sense of distance of your targets (e.g. what side of that wall is the blip coming from?)

Not a FPS, but Dead Space has by far the best UI in any video game. Everything is represented in world, the health bar being a light bar on the back of your suit, and your inventory being a hologram that your character deploys, can even move the camera around it to see it at different angles. It's always possible to work "gamey" stuff into your lore.

I don't know if anyone remembers but that Peter Jackson's King Kong game that launched with the 360 in 2005 had really unique "HUD". It was actually zero HUD whatsoever (without cheats), but you pressed B to hear your character say things like "it's okay, I've got enough magazines" or "only got a few bullets left!" It's neat because it's extremely immersive and realistic and also challenging. Nobody who goes around constantly shooting things will ever have an exact numerical count of ammunition in the corner of their vision. Unless you're carrying a small amount of ammunition for a high powered weapon, you do a brief weight check or make a general mental note of your ammunition expenditure. It also makes the game feel less like a shooter and more like a first person action game, like intended. It forces you to either treat your gun usage conservatively so going dry doesn't sneak up on you, or to use guns as last ditch panic mode options.

But Apex gets away with it in my opinion due to gunfights lasting a long while. Compared to, let's say, R6 or Csgo. In csgo I emptied the hud as much as possible to get every single Pixel on screen because seeing the corner of a head pop up somewhere is the line between life and death. In Apex you have plenty of time to figure out where the enemy is, return counter fire, etc.

Quick (*sure*) note for people saying you can just add ability to toggle HUD elements in settings. I'm not saying you're wrong, this is actually good idea, but it's definitely not the easiest solution. Although it is most straight forward, but also one that requires a lot of consideration. Once you add this ability, you now have to account for all players that toggle specific element. If you give this ability, then you should make it also work in the game, making sure there is other ways to get information from the HUD element diegetively (unless this setting is for difficulty, like less HUD = hardcore difficulty). However this is more about issue of developers relying too much on UI, navigators, map, fast travel for giving players information rather than giving it through the gameplay itself (like when you drive in GTA you never look at the road, you always look at the minimap, and this is bad (though this is partially fault of Sega))

The best minimalist HUD I've ever seen is Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Game. By default, there's no HUD whatsoever and I think a tiny dot in lieu of crosshairs, if anything, and you have a dedicated keybind to checking the ammo in the gun and your stores. Even with the optional HUD turned on, it's very, very minimalist, and I only turned it on to get an actual read of max ammo (which was a failure of the Check Ammo keybind; it only told you "I've got plenty" when you were above half, whereas the HUD showed absolute max, current, and ammo-in-gun, which saved me from a few times running completely dry where if I hadn't switched and my gun was just barely above half I would have, because ammo was scarce)

I completely dissagree- Apex's hud tells you everything thats neccesary for what its trying to do in a stylish manner that directs your eyes to the centers of the screen with its angles. In short the size of the map and Alt charge is so you can quickly parse the info. Your ammo count doubles as your weapon select indicator well and helps looting priority especially for noobs with how the colour coordination corisponds to the gun's class and by proxy ammo. A lot of info is put into you and your squad's health bars- including the character, health and armour charge and what levels of armour are equipped. The kill feed/chat/squad feed again is useful to parse info that you missed, to keep track of kills and provides more info than voice callouts can- this also feeds into accessibility The squares below your crosshair are backpack indicators to tell you how much space have left and only appear when that changes While some things I completely agree should at minimum be changable like the contextual interact button- and everything should be able to be moved and scalled by the player, a lot of the choices made with this directly facilitate and encourage actual squad play instead of lone wolfing. It fits thematically, provides all neccesary info and while yes- transparancy and scalling/moving the hud and having a hide hud button should be choices to say its cluttered and one of the worst huds youve ever seen implies either a lack of knowledge or would betray your biases towards minimalistic huds if your priase of Insurgency Sandstorms basically nothing hud didnt do that itself Now obviously this is also game dependent- as apex is designed for something like this and Insurgency is designed for its hud- and liking different styles of hud is perfectly fine but its like looking at say WoW and saying its HUD is trash compared to say Neverwinter's when they're two different kettles of fish

Adding a crosshair to Insurgency sandstorm would be stupid and spitting in the face of the original playerbase even more than they already have, its supposed to be a grounded tactical shooter hence why many "traditional" elements are omitted. Trying to run around hip firing all over *should* get you killed and punish you for not working with your team and playing the objectives. If you want a point of reference for the muzzle then buy a laser, the very fact there isn't a bloated HUD is part of the core design and a balancing feature. I understand the point but after so many of these kinds of concessions are made its a completely different game. If insurgency had a crosshair, no free aim, obtrusive ammo counter, mini-map, killfeed, scoreboard etc then its nowhere near the original design anymore and it might as well have been a different game from the start.

the game Deep Rock galactic has a good approach to it: you can customize the amount of info on your hub. It takes the form of option you can toogle on and off: ennemies life, minerals carried, ammo count, compass... You can even turn off the HUD entierly just by holding a button for a second. I wish it was a bit more granular (for a silly example: having your shield bar without your health bar), but as far as I'm concerned, having the player decide what ammount of info they want is the best way! Also, I like when the HUD is diegetic: to keep with Deep Rock Galactic, your ammo count is displayed on your gun (Halo Battlerifle style), so I can toogle off the ammo display on the HUD and still know at all time what ammunition I have left.

As a person who thinks in hand movements when I play smash (right index = jump, left index = shield, right thumb = smacks and grabs on my layout) I actually much prefer the apex layout to many other games. Yes, it's noisy, big, covers way too much of the screen but is controlled into certain ideas that tell you the information you need when you need it. The bottom left corner shows health and shield of your whole team as well as which level shield each member has by the color. The bottom right corner shows my guns, their ammo counts and ammo type I need to be looting with a quick look of the color. The top of the screen represents the game state, player count, my personal kill count, all player kills by which weapon, my position relative to the ring and surrounding geometry). I really enjoy being able to know what I want when I want so I'm not overloaded on my ammo count while I'm looking at my health to see how much I have to heal when I'm running from a huge fight next to the ring. I do agree that there are some really dumb things in the hud that make no sense, the ability, nade, utility (mobile / heat sheild), and ultimate being along the bottom super far away from each other is dumb and hard to read (so bad in fact I've created the bad habit of clicking on the item in my inventory to heal instead of taking advantage of the context based single tap heal button.) The text in the middle of the screen looks out of place and unfinished when you have a control prompt, and huge dumb ring closing notification is useless when I can hear it loud and clear (maybe move it to the top right corner where most other things related to game state are, or the top left so I can correlate the location of the ring to the fact that it is closing.) But overall, I think that the apex layout works really well and the other games that have the same trend (like TF2, which I really enjoy the game state at the top showing your team comp and which players are dead as well as showing the class of the dead players on the enemy team) work just as well. If I need something, I get it fast. Yes it takes some time to know what info you need when, but that comes with experience and I find that you learn the hud as you learn the game, which is super cool. Yes, as first these huds are daunting, cluttered, and overstimulating, but as you learn what you need to focus on when, the isolation it gives your brain to make the choices you need is what wins games.

The Apex Legends HUD does get in the way more often than it should. Some notable examples from my experience are: (1) Not seeing someone standing in front of me because the directional damage indicator was blocking them (2) Not seeing someone because the item pickup tooltip was blocking them from my view (3) Picking up an item at the same time as reviving someone because "E to swap weapon" and "E to revive" take up the same screen space and can occur at the same time (4) Not seeing someone because opaque banners like "You are the new kill leader" and "Scanned by XX legend" block the top third of the screen

The best game HUDs are ones you are able to just briefly glance at to get important information, such as your health or ammo bar changing to red when you are low, you don't need to process and read the actual number in the heat of battle, just red saying "not very much of that" and you know instantly. Small visual elements communicate that very effectively. While, yes, the clean minimalism of a solid color HUD with even spacings and fonts LOOKS nice, it actually isn't very good to PLAY on. Like seen in the video, CS:GO has a stellar HUD, everything is out of your way and you hardly need to mentally process the actual info, there's no extra visual stylistic textures and much of it is transparent backgrounds and tucked in the corners. The little things like what weapon you have equipped being a brighter white and pocketed items being a faded transparent grey to remind you that you have them, but aren't in your way. The kill feed is color coded obviously and even has an outline so you know which kills are yours instead of reading it. The map is solid and contrasting colors with 0 visual clutter. Fast, clean, unintrusive, and informative. One of the best HUDs in gaming and I don't even really play CS:GO.

For me it depends if the extra hud info is actually important extra information to help me do better or manage something. If it's just there for design purpose and I'm losing free screen space that's when it's a problem.

i like the ability to turn parts of the hud off can't go wrong when the consumer makes the choices
