    A few tips for people that want to copy Greg's setup: 1. You need to sand / grind away the anodizing on the sandwich plate where the post extender presses against it (right under the hex feature). This is necessary to ground the oil temperature sender to the block. This step is not necessary for the oil pressure sender, because it uses a separate ground wire. 2. You will need a bias / pullup resistor to connect the oil temperature sender. Typically 2.49KΩ is used, but any resistor in that range is fine because you can specify the resistance in TunerStudio. I used 2.2KΩ. 3. Connect the oil temperature sender to an analog input pin. I used Options Port D (Analog In 1). Then connect the pullup resistor between the temperature sender signal line and Options Port H (+5V Ref). 4. In TunerStudio go to Tools > Calibrate Thermistor Tables. Select "Custom#1 Temperature Sensor". Enter the resistance value of your pullup / bias resistor. Then enter three known temperature + resistance datapoints 5. The datapoints for the VEI Systems Temperature Sender are: 32° F = 6000Ω 124° F = 578Ω 200° F = 129Ω 6. Then go to Advanced Engine > Generic Sensor Inputs, select your analog input, name the sensor, and select the "Custom#1" transformation curve.

    He is 100% correct about the temps. I wait until my Miatas lifters stop ticking, wait for my temps to rise to almost the middle, then I still drive around for 5-10mins of "warm up driving" before i even start being rough or having loads of fun, simply because tires, drive train, oil all needs time to warm up. Just taking it easy and cruising around like a BAMF for a few mins is worth it! Great video man! Love looking at that clean engine! Its so beautiful. OCD or not, doing it right is the way to go man the only wait to achieve perfection! Never cut corners on things you love. OG Homie! Greg, clearly you love Miatas, but do you have passion for other JDM machines (love for other manufactures?), If so, which ones? Do you have other hobbies /things you love to do, that you do aside from cars and driving?

    First off, as always, thank you for taking the time on this vid. But man, I got so many questions! 1. How are you getting a ground on the oil temp sensor? Normally they ground through the housing/threads, but you're using sealant on the threads. 2. Same question about grounding, but this time about what looks like an anodized aluminum piece that's probably not going to conduct well against the block, right? 3. If you run a separate ground wire, how are you attaching it to the temp sensor? 4. I looked at the particular sensor that you ordered and it doesn't have a calibration table. How'd you configure Megasquirt? Did you just stick it in water at three known temps and measure resistance or something? You rock, thanks again for all you do, and hope your summer heat wave ain't treating you too bad!

    For the Q&A: Since I'm building a supercharger build for my 1.8 VVT, I'm curious on your thoughts on superchargers, Greg. Everyone and their grandmother seem to love the turbo. It's cheaper, sounds better and gives you that kick in the pants. But do you dislike superchargers? Or is it simply that you like turbos more? Why? For what reason do you prefer one of the other? For my own sake, I like the supercharger for it's relative uniqueness (here in Sweden, I'm one of *very* few Miatas with superchargers over turbos) and the complete lack of lag and massive low down torque. It is, however, much more expensive. I could've done three turbo Miatas for the money I spent supercharging mine.

    Note to everyone, you can't run an oil feel line from a sandwich plate to your turbo because the oil pressure would be too much. it will cause the oil seals of your turbo to leak and will either start burning oil via exhaust side or the turbo or be sucked through the intake.

  • @brandonb8598

    @brandonb8598

    7 жыл бұрын

    Well I want to give you my opinion, you can have ITB'S with a turbo or a supercharger, all an ITB kit does is just it allows more air to flow in the motor so I would suggest getting bigger injectors to compensate for the amount of air going in the motor. Which you would also need to tune your car so the ECU knows what your AFR should be. And with super chargers vs. turbo, it depends on what you want. If you want full boost all the time you should get a super charger, but with turbos if you have a small one, it will spool up pretty quick so a lot of torque at lower rpm range but you won't get a ton of power in the top end, as with a bigger turbo it takes a little for it to spool up as you accelerate but gives you a lot of top end power to push more HP. Hopefully this helped!

    This answered some old question and created new ones: Is it really necessary to cut that threaded rod for the filter in order to put that sandwich plate on? And why can't you still use the old oil ''cooler'' (it's a warmer actually) on there? My thought was that the OEM cooler/warmer thingy helps to get to operation temps much quicker while the new awesome Mishimoto cooler helps to keep them temps down in case of furious track use :D Because then the whole assembly of OEM-cooler+sandwich+filter would fit without the extender, wouldn't it? So my plan was OEM rod+OEM cooler+sandwichplate+filter. Yeay or nay? :D

I noticed when you removed your oil cooler your stud was also very long , but when you installed the sandwich adapter it was short. Did you cut it or change the center post? The long stud on my 1.8 will not allow the post extender to tighten down to the sandwich plate.

This could be a whole new video of you going and showing where to go. This is my situation now and it might be for a few others out there. I just want to have my car fully operationala and every little part of it running good before I start doing the tunning. I feel like if I go, tune the car and destroy the transmission or other parts of the car it would be dumb.

    Which stock Miata transmission and stock Miata differential are strongest? (manual 6 speed trans and torsion dif?) And how much HP will they RELIABLY handle? And how much would you have to build and boost a 1.8L motor to RELIABLY dish out that much HP? To make an MX5 "be all it can be" (and still be pretty much stock)...

  • @TheCarPassionChannel

    @TheCarPassionChannel

    +Wils0n951 6-speed and any 1.8L differential are the strongest factory Miata pieces. They will reliably hold 350whp+, some have gone into the 500's but typically those cars have no traction so they can't break anything. For a 1.8 to get into the 300-350 range reliably you just need rods, pistons (debatable), some form of oil pump protection (damper or better pump gears), and the rest of the supporting mods. Fuel, ECU, big enough turbo, etc.

Also - I had a heck of a time installing that mishi sandwich plate on my 2001 VVT block - the post was too long, so the post extender could not thread far enough down onto the post to tighten the sandwich plate against the oil cooler. I ended up fabbing a spacer to place between the post extender and the sandwich plate, but the issue would have been even worse without the oil cooler in place. Thanks!!!!

    Hi, I have the same oil temp sensor as you but am confused on how to wire it. Will any wire do ? Does it run straight to the ECU ? How does it turn it into a digital reading ? Thanks

    Can you please make a short tutorial video on doing 1.6 oil pressure sensor put into a 1.8 engine? I have the dummy sensor and I want the actual sensor on 1.6 and I already have the cluster from a 1.6 so I just need the pressure sender unit.

    Will the sending unit ground in the adapter? Some anodized fittings that I’ve used have to have a separate ground because they won’t ground in the anodized aluminum like they will in a block. Thanks

    Nice video! A couple of questions. Where do I have to pass the wires to enter in the cockpit? What kind of sensors (temperature and pressure) do I should buy? I drive a 1.8 NBFL Miata.

    Looks like you've decided not to run the oil "cooler". Will you cover why not and the whole coolant routing plan in a future video? I also noticed you are not running the heater core lines as well.

    +Jeff Mendoza Yes I will get into all the coolant routing once it's in the car. I will be running a heater core, just not a factory return line location

    You may have said that, but do you plan to run an oil cooler? I am currently thinking about running one, but that would mean I had to run the sandwich plate solely for the cooler and one sensor (pressure for example) an adaptor like yours from trackspeed for the turbo feed and another sensor (temp for example), wouldn't it? Or do I miss other options? :D Also, I am not sure if I really need a cooler ....

    Backyard Gearhead I'm not running an oil cooler to begin with. I'll have oil temperature to watch, and that will tell me if I need a cooler or not.

    Would ever you bother to build a 1.6 up like you're doing here (unlike the previous iteration)? Also, thoughts on k swaps. They're becoming pretty tempting for me lately and seem to have a ton of potential. Plus, they have a ton of valvecover real-estate for me to paint happy trees on...
