Oil | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix

On the latest Patriot Act, Hasan Minhaj analyzes how America became the number one producer of oil in the world. Hasan examines how the fossil fuel industry and government, through its goal of "energy dominance," are pushing for greater oil production and what that could mean for the environment.

Solar panels have only a life span of ~25 years and they have highly poisonous chemicals. Replacing them all 25 years and/or leaking those chemicals into the ground is....meeeh. Nope, doesnt work with teh actual status quo. My bet is nuclear fusion or nuclear reactor run on thorium.

Solar panels have life expectancy of 25-30 years but can be replace rather easily. One solar panel isn't as expensive to replace, when you take the cost of installation and how much they bring in. You get your money back after 7-10 years. However this is what I found during a quick Google search between multiple articles over an hour. Nothing in-depth and I can be wrong about numbers lol.

As an old guy (and a longtime Daily Show fan), I'm thrilled with this video. Minhaj is doing a great job getting younger people involved in one of the two greatest threats to our country's continued viability. Dumping the Leader for Life would be the other biggee. (PS kudos for remembering that Jimmy Carter tried like crazy to get us on the right track on energy and the Middle East at the same time. He got the first peace treaty between an Arab Country and Israel, and also resisted the chance to escalate tensions with Iran. Reagan, on the other hand, colluded with Iran to get elected and then illegally armed them to fund his fight in South America. Then he and Bush armed Iraq to weaken Iran...and you probably know the rest of that story. Think seriously about voting Democrat going forward!).

Where's the evidence that Reagan "colluded" with Iran? And while the Iran-Contra scandal was a stain on his presidency, it seems to me that Carter was far worse, given that the Iran hostage crisis happened on his watch, all while the Soviets invaded Afghanistan and international Communism reached the zenith of its power. Iran has proven to be a rogue state that deserved to be weakened through any means possible. A weakling like Carter wasn't going to do it.

(Same things he said about the people living on/around his planned golf course.) I mean - it's Scotland. Not even his own doorstep that he's shitting on. His mother left Scotland in the 1930s. The majority of Scottish immigration, to North America, took place when the poor Scottish crofters were being evicted by wealthy landlords who thought their ugly little homes were spoiling their sheep and shooting experience. They gravitated to the very American regions that are now Trump heartland states. I don't think those people, whooping it up for Trump, remember how Scottish they are any more. Even if they did - would it occur to them the disparity between the reason why THEY went to America and why Miss McLeod went to America... My bet is that it took Miss McLeod a lot longer to get pushed out of Scotland because it had been her ancestors doing the pushing.

Not to mention the pipelines are horrendous for our indigenous reservations. North Dakota is the most notable, but research the ones they're trying to build through the Minnesota rezs' lands. A spill could not only contaminate drinking water, but wreck so many of the ricing lakes, which is a staple food for we Anishinaabeg (not to mention an important traditional practice). For many communities, the available commercial and commodity food is so unhealthy and contributes to widespread diabetes and heart disease. One huge push (across Anishinaabe lands at least) has been to try to return to traditional land use by harvesting traditional food. And it's been helping so much! Mainly in Minnesota where there are abundant ricing lakes. The expansion of the oil trade would make that more and more difficult for communities trying to heal their bodies and cultural traditions. If you want to help, you should go support reservations like White Earth Nation where they sell the wild rice they harvest on their website. They also sell wild rice flour and honey they produce. It's all organic and hand harvested in the traditional way with non-motorized canoes, and it's gluten free for those with celiac. *It makes a great unique present for the holidays coming up*, and you're helping support indigenous communities reclaim their traditional land use!

@sumopit Come back and talk to me about safety after they aren't trying to build them through the backyards and drinking water of my family and my people. Come back and talk to me when they're not diverting the paths of pipelines away from white suburban neighborhoods through indigenous lands because they care more about staying on the former's good side. Come back and talk to me when they're not trying to take advantage of our position as an oppressed people to increase their profits. Our communities are working so so hard to heal from centuries of ongoing colonization and oppression and this is just one of the latest forms it takes. It's not safer for us because when it spills, it's on our lands and in our water. It's in your water too, you know. But we're the ones on the front lines of it. The best things to do would be to work as quickly as possible to decrease oil production and usage by shifting to renewable energy resources.

What we do seem to forget is to consider how much our actions contribute to the problem. The problem doesn’t exist without our voracious consumption. For a less funny but more detailed and in depth analysis of how we became addicted to such consumerism of oil check out Daniel Yergin’s Pulitzer Prize winning book “The Prize: The Epic Quest for Money, Oil and Power.” It’s an older book, published in 1992, but the subsequent events from that date only serve to solidify what he reports about our socially engineered addiction to petroleum and petroleum products.

@sumopit So what ? You'd rather just avoid a tough economic time at the detriment of literally humankind ? Be smarter than that... How about we provide training to people in the oil field so them too can make the switch to working on a different enregy source ? How about we train them to close the oil rigs effciently and with as little cost as possible for the next few years so they can keep working on what they know and we just stop hiring people there so their profession just dies off organically and peacefully ? I don't know man, I'm not a specialist but there are some people out there smart enough to keep people busy and useful WHILE making the transition to renewable which has to happen. Absolutely HAS TO. No one wants to ruin people's lives but that's exactly what we're doing by being backwards thinking with oil and climate change. Only we're not ruining your life right now, just the ones ofchildren in the future. Only selfish people have no problem sacrificing the future for their own comfort in the present. Backing off from the Paris accords was one of the most selfish, backwards thinking, greedy and demagogic thing any administration has ever done.

@@CreativeReaper90s the show he's referencing has a lot of islamophobic tropes yet it's being celebrated and critically acclaimed. Shows like it are not for us Muslims but are targeted to white people who would happily forget that it hurts other people and only see it as good writing. (Honestly it was quite lazy)

What he didn't mention, is that Dawn advertised donating to animal rescue funds for buying their product, when in reality, they only did that if you registered for their site, provided personal information and your demographics, provided proof you bought it (via copy of your receipt showing everything else you purchased) and signed the waiver so they could use your personal info for market research. A giant corporation wasn't doing it out of the goodness of their heart. Shocker.

If not for that courage when some were walking away with their tails firmly tucked, I'm not 100% sure that we would be getting this amazing show.
