Brazil And The Amazon | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix

On the latest Patriot Act, Hasan breaks down of the growing threats to Brazil's Amazon rainforest. After a long and welcome decline, Brazil's deforestation rates have begun to rise again, just as climate science shows how desperately we need the forest to survive.
Now, backed by the country's powerful beef industry, the country's inflammatory new president Jair Bolsonaro has vowed to exploit Brazil's natural resources. Standing in his way: the determined indigenous peoples whose domain over the land are the last, best shot for the rainforest -- and possibly the world's climate.

In most of his shows he speaks about “what we can do” and this is one had a very obvious call to action (besides donating money) which is to eat less meat(beef) but except for a few cow jokes here and there, the whole topic was overshadowed by corruption. The industry exists and continues to exploit because there is an ever-growing demand for beef. You can LITERALLY start with-eat less animals. It’s that simple. Or at least boycott this particular company’s meet, but people are so scared of telling people that their food habits may be destroying the world.

I think the better way is to get the population down. Like we just don't have a choice anymore. Anything we do just harms nature. The products we use come wraped up in plastic, The food we eat comes in plastic,The clothes we wear. We poison the air around us by just existing. The existence part of the equation needs to be removed. So I really just thank covid-19 for coming to nature's aid. Enough is enough

Genocide is a small price to pay for what humanity continues to do to ourselves. Forget what we do to nature and other species If u just knew the possibilities of a human life and how people choose to waste it. U himself would be itching to use the nuclear options. U just haven't seen what people have done with everything that is given to them . Beyond there compulsion they refuse to see the consciousness of their actions. It's beyond infuriating. Guyana is part of the Amazon, a small percentage but the Guayna rainforest is untouched and considered a virgin rainforest. Would have been nice to mention that at least this part of the Amazon is protected. A country with recent discovery of oil, and could potentially become another oil rich nation but currently with unstable political interest. Perhaps you can do an episode on this.

Great show! I'm so glad this is back!! Just a thing though: Lula's trial was super shady. Fastest trial in brazilian history, mainly so he couldn't run for president (cause he was projected to win). What they have on him is circumstancial at best, and even if proved to be true, isn't enough to prove corruption, only that he had an undeclared apartment. He went true some pretty bad stuff during the trial period, being denied basic rights. His situation is closer to political arrest (illegal in Brazil) than fair trial.

I didn't say anything about JBS nor did I deny Lula's involvement with them, to which we have no proof of guilt or innocence. Regardless of partisan issues, due process should be respected for any individual, and everyone knows it wasn't the case for him, both before and after his arrest.

This is ridiculous, you say it out loud: up to 80% of the deforestation is due to cattle ranching. In the end of the video you tell us to donate to organizations that help.. help how? Save 2% of the forest for the use of indigenous people? Save it all by not eating beef. It is that simple. No donations, no trials, no suing no nothing, just. Stop. Eating. Beef. Supply demand. If you do not demand beef, there's no supply of beef. This is the single most important step you can take towards saving the earth, not just 2% of it.

So disheartening seeing people, let alone the host of a tv show that spends thousands or more on research per episode pointing fingers instead of acknowledging the fact that the consumer is driving all of this in the first place. did you check the website at least? FYI money always helps! it's about empowering local communities like the indigenous people and other ONG to defend the territory and raise awareness of its value, and to provide economical alternatives so the locals don't allow this kind of practices. That's the real trick. Not eating meat helps as well, but as soon as there's a new demand for something the forest will always been seen as a disposable resource if we don't learn any better. Look it up, soya and quinoa production have caused and continue causing deforestation in southamerica (among other problems), so it's not what you consume per se, it's about where it comes from and how it is produced, but that keeps changing constantly, so you have to keep checking. In short, donate if you can, it helps! and from the consumer point of view go for "fair trade", bio and "rainforest alliance" stamps or support local producers with sustainable practices, and check your sources whenever you can. Too much work? you might as well try and live in the tribes and see your family and friends shot for trying to speak up and defend the mother nature, because that's how it is over there.
