Oil Painting Grand Canyon Tutorial and Quick Finish Event
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Follow along as I do an oil painting of a cowboy and his horse looking out into the Grand Canyon for the 2018 Mountain Oyster Art Show quick finish event in Tucson Arizona. Along the way I share my thoughts and techniques for painting this challenging subject and show you some scenes at the quick finish event. In a quick finish, you have a limited amount of time (2 hours in this challenge) to complete your painting and then have it offered for sale to the audience.

When I’m struggling with rocks I come back to this video - thanks. “When I like the painting I sign my name, when I don’t I use someone else’s”. Feel free to use my name on all the ones you don’t like Steve. 😃

(1 min mark): "I really do wish that I can show this to you in real time but unfortunately I don't think many people who would be willing to give up 3 days." I DO! Great video and painting Steve!
Another great lesson. I keep checking every day for your next video. I’ve improved my broken color techniques by watching you work. Love the stories as well. Can’t thank you enough.
Very nice painting! Love that you occasionally use the brushes that your parents gave you, AKA your fingers! I do that too, and I think of them, and thank them for the encouragement they always gave me to pursue art!
Very, very beautiful painting of a captivating canyon. Bravo on the quick-finish!
This was fabulous. I absolutely love the painting, and it was especially nice to see you finish it at the quick finish, as well as see the people who purchased it. The colors are so beautiful. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful work and painting tips.
Your demo of painting the rocks, along with your commentary on the cool & warm temperatures, was invaluable to us beginning and intermediate artists. Thank you for sharing! Congrats on the sale. I know they will always enjoy different parts each time they view this painting!
Stunning! If I could paint like you I would be soooo happy. Thanks for the video.
Wow, you are so blessed. With talent and good friends. Great painting, congratulations on the sale!
a magical work and a magical artiste
Real good! The shape of these brushstrokes are also what made this painting nice!
Love your explanation of your process...very helpful to this new developing artist (me) who is still trying to figure it all out

Hello. I've only just found your channel. This is the first of your videos I've seen. I always love watching people paint. Mainly as I'm drinking my morning coffee sat in the studio before I start working. Cheers. Look forward to seeing more
Wow.. need to rewind this video.. loving it thanks SO much.
This video was just what I needed today! I have painted in acrylics for about 5 years, but I live in Montrose, CO where the air is very dry. I finally became so tired of fighting the drying time issue that I made the leap to oils recently. I have a lot of head knowledge, but just can’t seem to translate it into brush knowledge! Grrr... Your incredibly well done videos that not only explain your process, but remind me to keep painting, not get discouraged, and have faith that it will come, bring me back to center - thank you! I hope to meet you someday to thank you in person! I understand that making content like this takes a lot of time and effort and I truly appreciate your giving and kind spirit!
Great advice. Love your tutorials.
I love watching you paint and following your thoughts as you share your genius. The advice you share is priceless. This was amazing. Thank you so much

Already in the early stages of the painting of the rock formations to the left, I felt in love with this picture. All those lovely blues in contrast to those warm, deep rusty-orange hues along side the lighter rockformations in all kinds of yellows... Oh, man...❤️ You are indeed a wizard. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge - I really enjoy watching you work a lot!

SUCH a great video. Wonderful advice.Great color and temperature vibrations. I wondered how people paint the Grand Canyon - just like everything else!! I’ve learned to not judge my paintings in the earlier stages. It just takes time and looking and looking and looking to choose the corrections I want to make. I used to get frustrated that things initially looked like failure, only to learn that if I’m patient, it can still be great. I put stuff up where I can see it for a couple of days and glance at it from time to time. I also photograph the picture and any reference I have at the end of each session, so I can see the progress.

Your rock work is incredible ! I watch every stroke and absorb the technique and reason for it. Wonderful painting and great instruction. Thanks for sharing your palette. Are you using bristle brushes - they look like really good ones. Most of my painting has been a grisaille and many layers and glazes using soft brushes. How refreshing it is to watch you paint. Thanks again.
