I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone who has subscribed. Today, I passed 1K subscribers, and because of you (and people like Steve @ Mind of Watercolor and Brian Ashmore Studio for their shout outs!) we did it in under 4 months. A beautiful painting with lots of atmosphere but I must say that I like your videos best when you explain what you are doing as you go along, such as, color mixtures, darks, lights, why you chose the particular colors, etc. Thanks for showing us how it's done!

Wow, it really shows the decades of experience, I love how you mastered the perspective in which space there is a fine order of form, surrounded by accurate lightning, clothed in color and characterized by texture and on top of all a general notion of presence how things shine all together! It gets you on goosebumps, this is what being artist is all about! Definitely you got some really refined understanding for the objects themselves and overall creative thinking, that is some refined piece of work, both your creations and the artist you are. I wish people to learn to paint like you, I definitely wish to learn one day, it's beautiful. Great work once again, got my day spinning!

Your art is incredible, but your teaching skills are just phenomenal. I love your videos and how much I am learning by watching you paint and listening to your valuable insight. However, I must say, I am blown away by what a perfectionist you are. I thought you were done by minute 20 (on the time lapse). Wow, you must have painted dozens of landscapes in one considering how many times you readjusted those mountains. It just shows that true artists are on a journey too, they don't have it all figured it out from the get go. Trial and error is the name of the game.

Now thats the best explanation of AP on a whiteboard I've ever seen. LOL! As for Boo? Maybe she can teach the cats around my house a thing or two about mousing. Seriously though, AP has always been fascinating to me. I remember standing in front of an 6' tall Albert Bierstadt for the first time when i was bout 13 years old. I didn't know what AP was then but I could see it. The atmospheric painting effects left an indelible mark on me. Great treatment of the subject and always a joy to watch you paint!

Aw, thanks so much Mark. I'll just bet you're better than you give yourself credit for. Most good artists don't think of themselves as good. It's the reason I've nicknamed myself "Salieri", ha! Many artists think that we're the only one who struggles with every painting. I used to ask my wife, "When does it start to get easier?" The answer is that it does get easier, but it's never easy. Here's a quote that may give you some comfort..."The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is granted to the less talented as a consolation prize". Thank you Steve. I needed to see how patient you are. How many times did you put those lighter tones in and out of those purple flowers? How many times did you repaint those mountains. I am trying to do a painting of the Grand Tetons and have been stuck a while because I haven’t been able to get the values right. Part of the problem is I am a beginning painter and I still haven’t learned how much the paint will darken as it dries. Also I am painting w acrylics which may be harder to get the colors right because of how quickly the paint dries. Anyway thanks for taking the time to video what you are doing. It is very helpful to me.

Love it- a job not to get color like that too aggressive - i like the atmospheric look to the center and base of the peaks- will try that. I found the Tetons difficult after the heavier thjcker air of the PNW everything seems closer and sharper in Wyoming even if I know painting it that way wont look right.

Clearly your thoughts on “best artists” are limited if not flawed altogether, as if THOSE artists are the best around, YOU ARE TOO, as you’ve made the concepts masterfully simple for even such minds as mine to grasp...! Jon, that has to be the nicest comment I've ever received! It made me smile cuz I have massive respect for both James Gurney (I've purchased some of his tutorials on Gumroad) and Andrew Tilscher. They are wicked good and to be compared to them makes me blush, lol! I do have plans of showing my palette either as a cutaway or picture in picture, I just have to figure out how to do that with only one camera =) Paint on!!

In South Carolina the atmospheric perspective is called "humidity". For both seasons- rainy and summer.

Used to be a Celtics/lever harp player, never really took to the Celtic or Irish music but played contemporary stuff. The nickname stuck but I no longer play as it was more a hobby than a passion. Discovered painting 4 years ago (watercolour, 2 years ago) and I am now addicted so my free time is all into painting now. Kind of miss it sometimes but I just can’t help but paint. I had a bad episode where I was diagnosed with a genetic cornea dystrophy that was making me over sensitive to light so started to paint (go figure!) then they told me I could get a cornea transplant, and I did, and although my vision is not 100% I am able to be in the light again which makes me want to paint even more! Loving this new addiction! Lol! I paint critters... all sorts... especially love their attitudes! (Www.artbychantaldupuis.ca)

Hi Uncinetto Superstar, that's a good question! I don't use glue to attach it to attach the painting panel to my larger board. Instead I use a product called Blue Tack or Museum Putty or even Poster Putty. I use a small piece in each corner and one in the center and press hard on the painting panel in those spots and its secure until I pull the panel off when I'm done. Easy! Per your lesson at the beginning, shouldn't the red on the far mountain be washed out (i.e. more blue)? Great painting!

Thank you Luis! I wish I could say there is an easy solution, but the best way to do this is to have a light touch and try not to mix your colors on your canvas, but rather on your palette. If you watch closely when I'm starting a new area, I put a test dab down and if it's not right I remix until it is. Once I have that initial color laid in, I try to keep my shadow and sunlit areas separate until it's time to merge the two. Having a lighter touch with your brush will help to keep from lifting up the paint that's below it. Also, let me suggest that you do some small paintings, 6X8 or 8X10" and give yourself a time limit of one hour. This keeps you from overworking an area, and make decisions more quickly and stick with them. Speed will help you to learn to control your paint better. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but for me, it really worked! I hope this helps Luis, let me know how it goes. Cheers and thanks for watching!

Hi Vic, The Scottsdale Artists' School is an amazing resource that has some of the best artist/teachers anywhere. I have not taught there, but maybe one day. I've taught "on location" drawing classes through the Phippen Museum of Western Art here in Prescott, AZ. I'll probably be starting to teach plein-air in the area in the next year. I'd choose to teach outdoor painting because it's simply the best and fastest way to become a better painter. Thanks for asking!

Thank you very much for your full painting video. One question: it seems that you changed the entire color of the mountains several times. Is it normal in painting process? Can not we decide on the color the first or second time that we put colors.

Hi Reza, thanks for watching and for your question! I decided along the way that the mountains needed more color in them than I had used. So, that was a bit unusual in my process. But, with oil paint, it's not right until you say it is, and if you're happy with the way you put it down, then, of course, you should leave it! When working from photo reference, you can't trust the colors that are there and need to rely on your memory of how they looked, so that can be more of a challenge, which is what happened here. Thanks for your question, it was a good one! Paint on!!

Oops deleting purple flowers by reversing video, then forwarding video... a bit confusing, but an excellent tutorial. Pity we couldn't see your palette of colours. Was the painting produced on the flat or vertical?

Thank you for this. If you intend to publish another instructional video, I've found nearly none that discuss the time between layers when oil painting. Was this done wet on wet or is there some "set-up" time prior to doing the next layer? It's not clear form the time-lapse. I see you add, for exampkle, highlights to the mountain areas. Did you thin the next layers of paint to apply to a wet base or let the base layers set-up/dry some prior?

Hi Sugee98, When I paint, I mix in a little Liquin into all of my paints so that it dries overnight. So when I paint on it again the next morning it's completely dry to the touch since the Liquin speeds drying time. But when I paint on it the next day it looks like I'm painting wet into wet because the Liquin helps the paint to glide on and look seamless. So unless I paint with thick paint drying time is not a problem for me. I usually wait until I'm sure it's the final layer to add my thick juicy strokes. Hope that helps!

Hi Ruth, mostly I use Utrecht brand of oil paint. Good quality at a fair price. I also use Gamblin, Winsor Newton, and Rembrandt for some colors. For instance, raw umber is too thick in the Utrecht paint, so I use Rembrandt's raw umber... Like that...

Could you talk about first time Plien Air Painting of buildings and landscapes

Hi Steve, would you please explain why the painting goes in a frame at the 26:35 mark, yet you continue to work on it? Is that a common practise, or did you just see some corrections afterwards. I'm thinking it would have to come off for varnishing, so why frame it? Thank you for the video.

Hi pbeckingham, thanks for watching. I don't know if this is something that other artists do, but I like to get to about 90-95% complete and put my paintings into the frame I'm going to be using and make any small color adjustments needed that might make them work better together. If I need to make adjustments too close to the frame, I simply pop it out, paint and pop it back in! It's not permanently in the frame. I take it out afterward, let it dry completely and of course, varnish it.

Hi George! First, thank you for watching my videos. You're awesome! Second, it's just one of those things that trying to rate myself and my standing and level as an artist has always made me a bit uncomfortable... I mean, there's so much behind a painting that I've done that shades my perception. You know, things like what I wanted the painting to look like as opposed to how it actually turned out. When I review my work, what I see is the reason I did the painting, the areas that I struggled with and the areas that seemingly painted themselves. So, I'm not a good judge of my standing in the genres I paint in. I figure that's for other people to determine for themselves (like you). But what I can tell you is hearing a generous comment like yours makes me extremely happy that I've connected with you through my artwork. It really does make the hard work (feels funny to call it hard) worthwhile. Thank you so much for the compliment and for being a "repeater". Paint on George!!!

Ok, I have to ask as I saw no one else mentioned it. First of all, the video is good, the painting is good and the information is good so, this is a very good tutorial. I have watched hundreds of hours of painting tutorials and I saw something in yours that I've never seen in any other. At about 31 minutes in, the video reverses and the brush is actually picking up the paint and this goes on until most of the purple for the foreground flowers is gone then it goes forward again and puts it back and then it reverses again and picks it up and then reverses and puts it back again. I don't think this was intentional but I can't know without asking and perhaps you weren't even aware of it. I love what you're doing and just wanted to ask about it.

Hi Steven, you know I edited this video and watched it afterward and I never noticed that it runs in reverse, but you're absolutely right, it does! I have no idea what happened to make it run backward for that short time. You definitely get the eagle eye award! Great Job! I can do lots of things, but painting in reverse is not one of them, lol!

Hi there Elisabeth! That's great feedback about being a studio painter. I know just what you mean. It's sooo easy to keep working on it when I should just stop. Do you have a technique for stopping before that happens? Do you leave a painting at night sometimes feeling like it's not good, but in the morning it looks much better than you thought it did? Happens to me all the time! Isn't it amazing how sometimes looking at something as long as we do on a painting, our eyes can deceive us.

I’m thinking here, I see the color drop off in your examples but I am confused in your painting example. It seems to have pretty strong color all the way up. Mid way I see greens but no yellow or red but there seems to be pretty good color to the top of the mountains. I guess, well, I need to get more pictures out and study them. You have the wheels turning in my brain for sure. After I do more research maybe I can ask more questions. Thanks

Draw Paint I am pretty sure I understand, your quick draw on the board, after Boo, I was taking the lines for the colors as a stop sign we will say. Then I was thinking about the Aspens in a valley in New Mexico. They show up in various areas as your eye passes though the valley. So I looked at your paintings on Instagram. I’m thinking about Cowboy Payday. The yellow is maybe in 3/4 of the painting so there are exceptions. Hope that’s right, just trying to learn here.

Essie, from what I can see on spectral colour, I think that Draw Paint Repeat is in error with the order in which colours fall off with distance. Everything that I've seen says that colours fall off in the order of the colour spectrum. So, red first, yellows next and the blues remain the longest.

@@NarrowGauge1 Sorry Rick, but that's incorrect. I've studied with many teachers and done much plein air painting and the yellow is the first color to noticeably diminish. John F. Carlson in his book "Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting" writes on page 64 "One of the most important truths bearing upon receding color out-of-doors is this: It is the yellow that fades out of a landscape as it recedes from the foreground. This means not only yellow itself, but the yellow in all mixtures, such as brown, warm red, orange, etc. Our green, for example will range from a sappy yellow-green in the foreground to quite a cool green in the middle distance and gradually diminish in it's yellowness as it goes farther back, until it turns to a faint emerald in the distance; and this emerald will become a faint greenish blue at the horizon. Again, it is the yellow that fades out of receding planes. As the yellow fades out, the violets and blues seem to increase in intensity. Given a great stretch of country to study this phenomenon, it will be seen that even the violets (purples) eventually give way to the blue. We may have a range of hills, one behind the other; the nearest one may be a warm violet (or contain red, blue and a slight amount of yellow in it's color composition) ; the next hill behind it will be a trifle bluer violet; the next behind it still bluer, and the farthest one almost pure blue (tempered with the prevailing sky color). Hey Steve, awesome video as always. I have to say though, I clenched my fist twice and said, "Steve, stop messing with those purple flowers!" You kept putting in lighter 'dots' of highlights and then removing them. I think you did that 4 times. Was there a reason?

Hi MJ, thanks for watching. Yeah, I just wasn't happy with them the way they were and so I kept at it until they felt right to me. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference, but I can't stop at something until I feel it's the best that I can do. It's just how I am and it can drive some folks nuts... and that's OK, lol!!

Can I ask, for this demo, what colors you were using on your palette?

Hi Peter, here is a list of my palette colors when I work in the studio. When on location, I will leave a couple of these off, but that changes depending on what I'll be painting that day. This is more colors than many artists use (especially if they believe in a limited palette, such as the Zorn palette) but less than others use. I like to use the neutrals and modifiers to get where I'm going faster than I could without them: NEUTRALS: titanium white lamp black raw umber cold grey medium (Rembrandt) MODIFIERS: yellow ochre burnt sienna green earth hue (Utrecht) dioxazine purple BLUES: cerulean blue cool blue ultramarine blue warm blue REDS: permanent red medium (Rembrandt) warm red permanent alizarin crimson (Gamblin) cool red YELLOWS: lemon yellow cool red cadmium yellow medium warm yellow hope this helps. One of these days I'm going to get a second camera and do an inset on the video of me mixing. Might be a while yet though.... thanks, Steve

What medium do you use with your oils?

When I use medium, it's always Liquin by Gamblin. It helps me to work wet over dry and speeds drying time, which is helpful when you're working to show deadlines.

Greetings- Aren't you afraid that you'll muddy up your painting by jumping around and adjusting your values? I've seen very few painters do this over the years.

I'm sorry but if the two mountains are supposed to appear separated in space, one on the right being further in distance than the one on the left...they're values and colors appear to be the same...at least in the video. But I do get your point.

Thank you for your response. I was confused because after what you had said on atmosphere, I would be seeing more atmospheric changes . I was confused on the in color choices. Well just didn't understand. Maybe if you could speak in thes next one of the whys of what you're doing would be helpful. The painting was beautiful!

BEHIND MY HOUSE WHERE I GREW UP IN EAST TENNESSEE In A LITTLE TOWN OF VONORE ! I ROAMED THAT NINETY ACRE FARM ANDGOT SO MANY IDEAS FOR PAINTING, BUTIM A HAIR STYLIST WITH NOT A LOT OF TIME TOO WORK ON MY PAINTING !
