How to Paint a Complex Scene in Oils and Have Fun Doing It!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Let me show you how I take 15 reference photos and put them together into a single story oil painting. It's not as difficult as you might think, but there are some things you should know before you tackle a complicated scene to make your life much easier. With some patience and planning, you can do the best work of your life!
For the impatient, the painting demo starts at: 9:10
Ivory Black, raw umber, cold grey medium (Rembrandt brand), yellow ochre, burnt sienna, green earth hue (Utrecht brand), cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, dioxazine purple, titanium white, lemon yellow, cadmium orange, permanent red medium (Rembrandt brand), alizarine crimson permanent (Gamblin brand). My painting medium is Liquin Original.

Yes sir I so appreciate that you were talking about painting what you're familiar with it was just the other day when I watched somebody painting and they painted goats and called them sheep I nearly fell out of the chair with laughter you are absolutely right about all that you have said thank you for addressing that problem that's so many of us make❤ when I was very young I adored my grandfather and followed him everywhere she went. They lived on a small farm and he still used horses plows, wagons ,buggies , Sledge which at about the age of five I knew how to Hitch and harness ,Bridal and saddle all by myself❤ of course that's been quite a few years ago and I forgot most about it today😢 lol.... really appreciate your teaching easy to understand ty may the Lord bless you and yours and your career❤n

And I don't want to fail to thank you for measuring the helpfulness about making small painting pools. I've never done that before and wondered why people did that I thought it was a great waste of paint. Why can't you explained it I so appreciate it I really understand the necessity and the helpfulness that that would do.... I'm definitely going to use your advice in the future❤❤ty

Thank you so much for this lesson! I am an artist who can get true likeness, but I've always painted strictly to the lines and couldn't get that softness I see in other paintings! This has been a great help! I love your realism as well, and your subject matter. I have written to you before and I wanted to find you again, especially for lessons online. Thank you!

Thanks for subbing Bev! All the photos of the stagecoach and the riders on horses were taken at the same time at the same shoot as I moved around getting different angles. I had to supplement my reference with new photos because I used a camera lens that I shouldn't have used (it wasn't the best quality and I knew it). Also, I needed additional reference for the shotgun and revolvers. But when you are pulling together paintings like this you look at getting the reference as part of the process, especially when you know it'll make your life easier and the painting better. When I was illustrating for a living, getting reference was just part of the job and I guess it's carried over to my painting. Thank you for your trust and don't be a stranger, OK? Happy painting!!

Just want to say that I love your videos. Having dabbled with watercolor and acrylics off and on for about 40 years, I recently have been painting military miniature figures and busts in acrylics. I bought some oils to paint the faces(longer open time for blending) and find that I like painting with oils. Your channel has given me inspiration to try my hand at some fine art canvas paintings in oil. You have a wonderful gift for showing techniques and theory while keeping the videos fun and entertaining. Your videos have helped me brush up on my composition and color theory. While I don't think I would ever do a western themed painting I enjoy your cowboy paintings.

Outstanding work! Surely who bought it enjoys looking at it every day, and loves discovering some small details didn't see the day before:) One consideration though, which is more of a mixed feeling I have when selecting the surface - Given the canvas texture, have you ever thought using a smoother surface like a wooden panel to paint those details more easily? It's true that Liquin, in my experience, makes painting smoother to be applied to, but still with the canvas grains in the middle - Quite a task, is it?

First, you have live models and stagecoaches to take photos of? Wow! That's awesome! Second, when I take photos to paint from, it's tough making sure the sun is always in the same place in each photo. Last, you and I make coffee the exact same way! Those things make the best cup of coffee!

  • @SteveAtkinsonFineArt

Hi Taylor! I don't always use a Moka pot, but it's a great way to make coffee for sure. This reference is from a photoshoot I did with a couple of buddies up in Montana a few years back. It's not something I do too often anymore because I have so many reference photos I'll have to live to be 150 to use them all, lol. I know what you mean about it being difficult to keep the sun in the same place when taking your reference. I always have a photo print or two at my shoot for to refer to the shadows on the ground and keep them going in the same direction. Otherwise, you are going by your memory or just guessing and I'm not good at that. Hope you're well and thanks for watching!

@@SteveAtkinsonFineArt, I can't get out like you do so I have to depend on putting together a montage of different photos but trying to juggle the same light direction is really hard. I have to "guess" at where the shadows would be something. It's not ideal, that's for sure. Thanks!

Great tutorial, you make it look so simple. I struggle with complex paintings of scenes, but seeing how you went about it has given me incentive, I normally do either a single subject up to 3 in my paintings, I’m very critical of my work and have been afraid to work on a scene as complicated as this, I think it is a fear of failure that has stopped me. I have wanted to do this for a while, but I also wanted to make sure I would do my paintings justice before attempting it, I’m improving with each painting, I guess I just get a little overwhelmed, but I will be trying one soon, thank you for giving me the courage to try.

Such a great video Steve! Love the rich density of info you provide. I haven't painted with oil in a while but I absolutely loved Liquin. It was my favorite medium by far though I don't have the experience with mediums that you do. It was just simple and easy to use (not to mention fast drying) so I quit looking. I used to like painting with a technique used by illustrator Kinuko Craft which was glazing over pencil drawings on illustration board that had been sealed with Crystal Clear. Neat technique. Works with watercolor too on watercolor board. I need to revisit that technique once again.

Hi buddy, sorry, I somehow missed this post! I was a HUGE fan of Kinuko E. Craft and haven't thought about her work in years, thanks for making me smile... grin. So she used Crystal Clear out of a spray can? Hmmmm, interesting! I've been thinking about trying to seal it with a clear gel medium instead, but haven't had the time to experiment. I'm sorry I haven't had the time to watch your latest video, I'm under a crunch with some illustration work that's come in, but I promise I will! Paint on Brother!!

This is probably the most enjoyable and informative videos I have seen. I am color blind and most of the time I can match the color ( I think ) but to lighten or darken it is a problem or guessing game. A simple answer is probably common knowledge to most, but no one has ever explained it to me. Thanks.

Thank you James, that's really kind of you. I can't even imagine the challenge you have by being color blind. I truly don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you do. Do you mostly do monochromatic paintings?

  • @jamesoliver505

    @jamesoliver505

    5 жыл бұрын

Sometimes, I use the mother color and glaze parts of it. I usually get the values right or close enough. One way I lighten is simply to start with the darkest mixture of the color and add white. Sometimes I use white and a black to value the color, the traditional answer. Maybe add a tirinary color to it. The best thing I found, as in your video, is to puddle or premix the values. It gets frustrating that in a lot of my paintings people will often say 'why is that pink'? Especially when I mix Burnt Siena with anything. I am the only artist that can mix black and white, or blue and green etc and come up with pink. Thanks for answering.

i always wanted to paint scenes like this , espeically scene like the ones from neoclassicim painter such as Jacques-Louis David, so as a beginner thsi is extremely advanced , but i hope that one day i may paint like you , but first i see that i have to learn the basic and généralities of drawing ( figures , the details on the figure; facial , the clothes , various objects , shading , proportions etc.. ) then the painting part comes in where i have to learn to paint ( blocking in , getting the right colours , etc..) , when that day comes i will return to this video, hopefully , by that time i would have achieved the skills to paint the scenes that i always wanted to paint .

I've worked in illustration houses where there were illustrators who weren't able to do a successful illustration because of the constraints of having to work to someone else's vision. But as fine artists they absolutely shined, because they were driving the bus! Best of luck as you go and don't be a stranger!

Hi Taz, if you mean how do I seal my drawing once it's transferred to the canvas, that's by brushing on a very thin coat of Liquin which dries overnight and is ready to paint on the next day. To varnish a finished painting I use either Kamar spray varnish or Gamvar brush on varnish.

You're welcome Sanjay. Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch and ask a question. When starting a painting I will thin my paint with some Gamsol. Then I use Liquin for my painting medium. It makes the paint much easier to use and I can paint lights over darks and darks over lights. It dries fast and when dry keeps my paintings from looking chalky and needing to be oiled out before working into a dry painting. Hope that helps!!!

Yes, I email my drawing to FedEx Office (formerly Kinkos) and have them do a transfer print the size of the painting. Usually it's oversized, so they use their blueprint printer. Sometimes it's so big I have to print it out in pieces and splice them together, lol. Oh, and I love that mug.... Amazon baby!

Thanks Charles, I appreciate the compliment! When I was experimenting with painting, I did try acrylics because many of my favorite wildlife painters use the medium... Robert Bateman for one. But I found it wasn't for me for a couple of reasons. First, because it dries so fast I had to premix many of my colors and had a hard time blending as I wanted. Second, it dries half a value darker than when it goes on wet. I want to mix my colors as I go without having to keep a well of every color mixture I use. So for me, oil is a much better medium. Mad respect for artists who use acrylics though!

I just discovered your channel and really enjoyed watching how you created this painting. My question is: how do you know/decide which edges to soften or smudge and which to leave sharp? The sharpest edges should be at the focal point, but it seemed to me that you had all soft edges? Or perhaps I missed noticing the sharp ones. If you’ve already addressed this in other videos that I haven’t watched yet, just point me to it. Thanks!

Hi Jonathan, you're right, the info I included was not very detailed. So, I'll put a more detailed video on how I do this on my to-do list. Thank you for the suggestion. The process of gathering the reference, shooting additional reference I thought I needed (such as the robber on the ground and the guns that were thrown on the ground), and putting them together roughly in Photoshop so that I could do the drawing was probably not more than 3 full days. The drawing was probably 3-4 days, so in total the prep took an additional week before I put brush to canvas. Hope that helps a bit. Paint on!

Hi Joey, good question. I scan the drawing into my computer. In Photoshop I increase the scan to the size I'm doing the painting at, and then email it to Fedex Office. I have them do an oversize print at 100% on their thinnest white copier paper. I then rub the back of this print with charcoal or pastel, lay it over my canvas and trace the image with a roller pen. When finished transferring, I seal the drawing with a thin coat of Liquin like I did on my "drawing your image onto your canvas" video. Hope that helps!
