Couldn't find any good videos online covering this so i shelled out over $2.5k to get this fixed at the dealer a few days ago. Mine failed at 47k miles. Moral of the story is be patient until Kern drops a vid 😂

this probably took longer to post than it should have, but i hate replacing parts that aren't broken just to make videos.

It’s a 9 hour job in the book but yea I just replaced mine and it started leaking 2 months later time to get a aluminum one
Thanks again. I did this already. This is going to help so many people in the future
The video I’ve been waiting for
me waiting with my oil filter housing in the box for kern to drop a diy on it lmao
Thanks for doing this DIY, now i definitely know I'll never be doing this myself. Geebus, what a nightmare.😮
Yeah this is going to be a no from me dawg. I’ll be paying someone to do this.

Did this for my buddy what a pita. Replaced it with aluminum.
Replace the plastic OE with the aluminum one. There is an Aluminum Oil Filter Housing for B58 on the market

Where? Who makes it? In the alternative, would the S58 OE aluminum filter housing swap over?

But isn’t it the o rings that fail?? Or are the housings cracking?

@@johncooke7191 I tend to think both is possible, but I consider THESE TALL FILTER HOUSING o-rings on EVERY vehicle (that has this design) to be a wear/replacement part.
Great job.If I do this on my B48I think I'm going to change the heat control module And the left motor mount.Do you think that excessive? There is so much work to get to that point.
I did it it was a bit of a pain in the ass that lower bolt between the coolers lol people need this video well detailed

did you use a 3/8 deep socket? and how did you go about remove that one i can’t seem to find the correct extensions to grab it on
Was there a gap after putting the oil cooler on? Between the cooler and housing?
Hey Kevin do we have to prime the OFH with oil?
Any chance for this job being easier if accessed from the bottom?
Do I need to put oil in the housing when I install the new filter?
Does this guide apply to the B58TU as well?
I had to do this on my car as well… M240i owner here. Gaskets can’t hold a crack
Can you make a video of a complete mod list of your 340i? 😊

yes will make one after this stage of the build is complete
I had my ofh leak coolant everywhere and also had my main reserve tank crack so it also spilled coolant everywhere. Now every time I get done with a drive I always smell coolant from the front of the car and I have ptsd from it lol. No leaks tho
@Starscream8896

If you smell coolant after driving thats not good
The plastic filter housings broke on both of me 3.6 Chryslers at the same time a couple months ago. Oily mess all over my driveway. Metal replacements shouldn't have any more issues. This plastic crap needs to stop.

amen all my homies hate plastic
About to do this on my car but upgraded to the aluminum housing from Aliexpress, should I use the oil cooler on it, or just throw on the oem cooler as that part isnt really the failure point of the housing?
@kern417

i would use as many oem parts as possible. for sure oem gaskets, cooler, and filter.

Even the cooler thats been on the car for the last 75k miles? If it looks good the internals will still work well?@@kern417
The B48 version of this part is known to crack. Doesn’t seem to be an issue on the b58 version. Any idea why? Edit: shouldn’t the engine be primed before starting it up fully again?
@bsturn

It’s more common on B58s closer to 100K+ miles
@kern417

some b58 owners say it has cracked but mine didn't. there's nothing really to prime for the oil filter housing.
Any leads on an aluminum aftermarket housing? Or, would the S58's stock aluminum housing swap over?

if it's leaking, you don't know if it's a leaking gasket or a cracked housing until you remove it. i'm not going to wait until i have the part removed to order replacements.

@AMS611
3 ай бұрын
@@CarlosPlayhouseif you only have a metal oil filter cap that you twist off to change the filter, the actual housing that the cap threads onto is still plastic and is still likely to leak. Metal housings can be found online for $300ish and if you have one of those then you should only need to replace gaskets, though this is a less likely scenario.
BMW never learns, another leaking ofhg 😂 and you have to remove the “intake manifold” like the n5x cars too
If I do this it’ll be 3 day minimum job
What a nightmare!
This is really starting to get the weak point of b58, it is not if but when it happens
I am seeing a "while you are in there" fiasco when I do this. I have 78K on my 2017 M240i. Crossing my fingers for longevity of my housing.
I kern I’m looking into building my engine, what exactly needs to be done? Can I get away with pistons and rods looking under 900bhp
