Great Video as always. A90/A91 Supra have a similar but slightly different sequence for Low Temp that includes the 3 quick Start button presses to go into Diag mode before the rest of the sequence begins. After pressing the gas peday a message on the dash about the service procedure beginning is displayed and the pump starts. Electronic pump goes for like 10 min. Ran it 3 times and no more bublles. Hi Temp will be tomorrow!.

Thanks for this - very helpful. I can confirm I used this process today to bleed air from the low temperature circuit on my 2016 M140i manual and it worked a charm. This is despite this method not being mentioned in the official BMW manual which states that both circuits are bled together by pressing the start button 3 times and actually running the engine, more or less as per part two of this video. When I ran the process, I could clearly see fluid and bubbles moving around in the low temperature tank but there was nothing going on in the high temp tank at all. This would mean that the first procedure only runs the low temp electric pump or could be running both BUT on the high temperature side, the electric pump is not part of the bleed process and it seems logical to me that this pump is only used as an auxiliary to cool the turbo after shutdown. My conclusion would be the first procedure (undocumented by BMW in my manual) does very usefully purge the low temp system by running just the one electric pump and the high temperature side is purged by the mechanical pump, whether or not the second "auxiliary" electric pump is running or not. According to the official manual, the second procedure (and indeed the only procedure mentioned by BMW) does bleed both the low and high temperature circuits at the same time. Either way . . I'm happy with it because I only wanted to bleed the low temp circuit but in future will probably just run the second procedure and bleed both together with the engine running. I don't think the second electric pump plays a part in any of this - I suspect it merely kicks in after shut down to keep the turbo cool.

Hey @kern417 a subscriber here. I have a question. I know BMW suggests using a vacuum tool to do this but I want to do this at home, my theory is that I can use the manual bleeding procedure that allows the system to bleed cooland and get air out from the system to my advantage. I'd take out the hose that brings back the coolant back to the coolant reservoir and take it out from the reservoir and connect to a garden hose that will allow me to extract existing coolant from the system. While I'd keep adding either fresh coolant at the same time ensuring no air entering the system and at the same time replacing the fluid in its entirety. Do you think this would work? I intend to follow the following steps Remove Hose: Disconnect the hose leading from the engine to the coolant reservoir. Connect Garden Hose: Connect a garden hose to the disconnected end. Ensure a secure connection to prevent leaks. Flush System: Start the engine and allow the coolant pump to circulate the coolant. Simultaneously, introduce fresh coolant into the system through the radiator cap or other suitable access points. Bleeding Procedure: Follow the manual bleeding procedure outlined in your vehicle's service manual. This often involves opening bleed screws and allowing air to escape while maintaining a proper coolant level. Monitor Temperature: Monitor the engine temperature carefully during and after the flush. Ensure there are no signs of overheating.

Thanks for your video @kern417, I was discussing the difference in color and appearance of the coolants in either the low temp. (clear brown) and high temp circuits (blue) from the factory with @NoBrainerTalk. It seems BMW does not recognize any part number for the low temp circuit and people were changing them both tanks to the BMW regular coolant (blue). Was this also the case for you? There is one user who pressure tested at the BMW dealership and found no issues and that their mechanics stated they do not know why the color difference exists. Do you have any more information?

If anyone is wanting to do this without risking the battery dying, I took the cap off, started the engine with the AC on & then waited for the pump to kick on then filled it all the way up, after a few times of doing this and driving around then parking & waiting it gargled all the water down one last time. I might have some air bubbles in the system but the AC kicks on & stays on blowing ice cold with no more coolant drop in the tank. I don’t know if turning the AC on sped up the process at all but I did it anyway just in case.

The only way I’ve been able to bleed the high temp circuit is to turn the car on and do the revving procedure. @@jclavarreda83 No. All "40" designations relate to the B58 engine, not the size or type of vehicle, therefore the process should be the same. Today (June 4, 2023) I followed the process exactly as described by on my 2018 240I X-drive and achieved virtually similar results, perhaps a bit better than you have. However the cooling system on my car didn't really need any bleeding as I have never replaced any components but since my coolant level was a bit low I'd give it a try, if for nothing else as a learning opportunity. Everything worked flawlessly and I added 200 ml to the intercooler circuit and about 300 ml to the main circuit. Albeit not much coolant needed to be added, at least I now know how to do it, thanks to Kern417!!!

@@kern417 Thank you. I have Bmw G20 with B48B16 (1.6 lt) engine with mechanical water pump. But it also has a secondary small black plastic electric pump as well. Is the procedure same as at the video? Or will I bleed air out through small black screw while on idle as old style bmws?

Thanks for a very interesting video but now I am confused. I have a copy of the official BMW Service manual and it states that both circuits are bled simultaneously. The procedure in the manual is very similar to the method you demonstrated but differs slightly. It clearly states one procedure to cover both circuits. First step is to release the bleed screw for 10 seconds or until fluid seeps out. Connect a charger to the battery, switch on headlights and hazards. Fasten driver's seatbelt. Heating on max, fan on min and then 3 quick stabs of the starter button, followed by 15 seconds with the accelerator depressed and then start the engine. Now rev to 3500 rpm for 10 seconds, followed by allowing the engine to idle for 30 seconds. Repeat this process 5 times and then leave the engine idling at 1200rpm. After 11 minutes, revs will drop to normal idle of around 850rpm and the process is finished. . . . . this is as per my official manual BUT . . . I am acutely aware these documents are not always absolutely accurate and I am intrigued by your method because I do want to bleed my low temp circuit ONLY and if this is possible without running the engine, I would like to give it a go but it is strange that my manual specifically states that both circuits are bled simultaneously with the one procedure. Is this technique something you discovered yourself or is it documented officially?? I'm puzzled. Anyway, either way - I 'm definitely going to give it a go because I siphoned the coolant out of my low temp tank and in doing so and refilling it, I managed to get air into that circuit and it needs bleeding but I don't really want to run the full bleed of both systems as per the manual

@@kern417 I understand about there being 3 pumps and the reason for each. I'm just a little confused that the service manual only highlights the single procedure I documented above and says nothing about being able to bleed to low temp circuit on its own. I will try it and from your video, I'm sure it will work - it's just baffling that the procedure isn't documented in the BMW service manual - only the single procedure for bleeding both circuits at simultaneously with the engine running. The other thing that's weird about the procedure in the manual is it suggests letting the car cool down after bleeding and then topping up to the max level plus an additional 200ml!! This would tend to suggest that even a full bleed can't be expected to get rid of all the air and over a period of time, a little more will be released and hence the 200ml overfill. Anyway, I'll be a happy camper if the standalone method works - will try it first thing in the morning

@@kern417 I'm intrigued . . .it definitely works because I did it yesterday but I can't find it in my manual which specifically covers the F20 140i. It could be documented somewhere else in the repair section and I've just not found it . . . could you possibly give me the page number in the manual? In mine, the dual procedure is described on page 5360 of 9308 but unable to find any reference whatsoever to the single procedure - very baffling

@@kern417 . . . The explanation is of course that my car is a 140 and many of these manuals are compiled as a cut and paste exercise. With a B58 engine, the procedures should be the same but clearly the two manuals are different - your 340 vs my 140 but . . . the error or omission would appear to be in my manual. That said, I would still vacuum fill if filling from scratch, particularly the high temp circuit.
