Oil Dilution caused Bearing Chips - Failed Park Brake - 8HP Service - SDV6 Discovery 4
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We found bearing chips during a regular oil change after 152000 km in this 3.0L SDV6 Gen2 (EU6) Land Rover Discovery 4 and a major Oil Dilution. We also fixed a jammed rear park brake and changed the 8HP Transmission oil with filter. We did an adaptation value reset and the park brake bedding-in procedure.

I just HAVE to respond to that 😉 I used to work for an MAN Main Dealer (even got to be a Chargehand) and MAN had these complicated procedures to correct electronic faults on the first generation TG trucks. We realised all we had to do was disconnect the batteries, go have a tea break and 30 minutes later reconnect the batteries, delete the fault codes with the "immer notwendig'' laptop and job done. "We outsmarted them. They were only MAN and we were British" However MAN did beat us more often like when we had to calibrate clutch and throttle pedals, get a conversion file online from Munich and reload into the truck's ECUs when we just changed the door switch module 🤦♂😂
Many debacles overcome, Vera constantly hungry, a dog, Robins beautiful blacksmithing and a happy wife all elements in a classic LR time video Thankyou

Yeah, I suspect most dealer ‘technicians’ are actually part fitters rather than technicians. No requirement to solve problems if it will be replaced, which is why you need a skilled technician.
My first laugh of the day young Christian, over blaming the woman for touching your car. Thanks both for a Happy Sunday morning for me, old, retired, on the coast. You are both very comical and easy watching both.
The most informative, amusing YT channel for demonstrating a successful married life. And you can learn a lot about being a mechanic, engineer, and video producer. Who knew Germans have a great sense of humour. At least two of them that is :)

Sadly it seems the dog is not a permanent member of your household. See the excellent Mr Hewes channel, often featuring Ted, the canine tank overhaul supervisor.
Fascinating how complex these vehicles are. I don't own a Land Rover but your enthusiasm for the cars makes me a subscriber because you are so good at explaining and overcoming issues. Thanks.

Another great video. Your workshop is amazing and your Land Rover knowledge is second to none. You and Vera take care and stay safe.
I'm glad JLR changed to the e Parking brake to on the calipers. The whole motor and cable set up looks like a nightmare. I guess I need to look closer at my filters when changing mine. But we are actually changing it early. Oil and filters are cheap engines are not.
I just watch these with a permanent grin on my face. Brilliant videos.

It's always fun to see Robin in your videos. He is outstanding.
Love the channel, low battery warning is a bit more complex than just voltage. It primarily works based on battery state of charge which is based on coulomb counting when the vehicle is active with correction during quiescent phase & in extreme error cases during cranking. There are various additional bits of functionality which are in place to make the system more robust - mainly this is a period of positive charge once the warning is triggered to reset. There is a lot more to it than this but these are the main points. One of the major causes for false triggering is incorrect connection of battery chargers, if the charger is connected straight across the battery terminals the BMS doesn't register the charging current so you end up with a mismatch between state of charge estimated & actual. It will correct during quiescent phase but it could take 6 hours plus. The other thing to consider is when connecting the battery - on initial connec6the BMS will take a "quick soc" measurement based on voltage. Due to the vehicle pulling current on initial connection if the connection is bounced you can get a low voltage & hence a low soc estimate. Again it will correct but takes time in quiescent phase. Also interesting to note is if you leave a charger connected continously the BMS may never go into quiescent phase as it needs a very low battery current level. Apologies for the long post but it's a fairly complex function & I've mentioned a very small part of it here!

We owned 4 LR4 and one LR3 and a RR L405. The ECU was hung up. Resetting it cured it in this case. We did have all sorts of battery issues before and sometimes it was difficult to find. Not in this case. Thanks. Christian

You've got some background I would appreciate in compulsory social gatherings. Last time this happened was joy in discovering at a party that a colleague's husband was a steering wheel airbag expert. Serious question, to disable the unwanted smart alternator function in my car without resorting to a laptop, would my AGM battery likely be happier if I added a weak AA cell to fool the sensor wire that the main battery Voltage was lower ? I'm irritated that my aircon fan only runs with acceptable flow when I'm braking and the alternator is worked harder and the starter cranking speed is never particularly vigourous.
Thinking is not one of Land Rover strengths.. very true!
I do enjoy your video’s, thank you so much! I drive a Toyota and Honda, so we don’t see the problems you have, but I love to watch intelligent people explain processes, whether it be on motor vehicles or most anything mechanical.

I had the LR Ingenium 2.0 diesel with horrific oil dilution (needed oil changing every 6000 miles and I only did long journeys; LR did first few years of oil changes for free until out of warranty……🤔). Never buying LR again, but still enjoy your videos!!!
@josephgittos3787
6 күн бұрын
Yes I have the same issue but to be honest I have a good reputable garage ( non LR ) that does it for half the price and then now and then I send it to LR for the oil change stamp, so for me not a issue as to do oil change twice a year is better then some people only changing oil every 2 years, my next car I will go back to petrol , less noisy and less dpf problems
@cp4512
6 күн бұрын
@@josephgittos3787 I was worried about wear to the engine so sold the car (Discovery Sport). I did the oil change myself after warranty and it had 8 litres of oil to take out, so must have had about 2 litres of diesel in the oil sump destroying the lubrication. That’s why I sold it quickly!
@mf303

I had the same issue with an ingenium. I asked Land Rover what the impact of running diesel in the oil on engine life expectancy - they declined to answer. I sold the car before the warranty expired. I think oil dilution is a problem with some/many euro6 diesels, not just JLR. Which is why I keep a Euro 4 diesel for our short journeys, and Euro 5 for longer journeys. Fortunately I am not (yet) impacted by ULEZ, but I know it’s coming…….

Watching Christian and Vera on a Sunday morning is like having coffee and reading the paper. You know its sunday! Christian will have a mental breakdown if he saw my D3. Looks unloved. But it is loved... ish. 😅
I watch this channel because many of the issues are the same in my Jaguar XF-S 3.0 TDV6. I normally change the engine oil every year (no more than 5500 miles or 9000 km) but now I'm thinking of changing it every 6 months and dissecting the old oil filter after watching this video.

'Oil Dilution' - are there any two words other than these that can strike so much terror in the heart of man (or at least a man with a post-2016 JLR SDV6)? It's like having a ticking bomb under your bed.

Well done Robin, very skilled always happy to see your projects.
The oil dilution is caused by frequent short and cold runs, where the ecu is attemting to heat up the dpf through post injection, but either the drive cycle is interrupted, or the temps are just too low for it to do so.
