Oil and filter change on a 2007 SAAB 9-3 1,9l TiD *Insane method*

Ойын-сауық

First things first; If it's stupid, but it works. It's not stupid!
We know this method may seem unconventional, but we find this method to be both fast and easy.

My Saab friends. I found that by removing the radiator header tank, I was able to undo the oil filter cap from the top of the engine bay. With a 32mm socket , a 2"/50mm extension and a rachet. Without having to climb on top of the engine. All the same a good video and alternative way of doing the job. Big welldone lads. of👍

@@ianpearce5745 Also Ian, if you attach a piece of hoes to the stubby piece on the filter housing, and then unscrew the filter cap to the point where the oil drains from the hose into your drain pan. A lot less mess.

You guys made your job hard for no reason. I have a 9-3 1.9 tid and my oil filter is exactly same position. All I did was climb ontop of engine . Rested my knees on the plastic engine cover and reached down with a normal ratchet and 32mm socket on end of it and took it off. No extensions nothing. Simple as that. I did it 2 days ago and also did the same last year on my car. Why did u not just do that? Its simple and not hard

Thanks for the reply! Well the reason we did it the way we did, was that it was the only way we could think if. I don't remember if we had tools that were long enough to do it with your method, but next year we can try that!

@@Shockrox59 Yeh I get you. You just need to reach down while having your knees ontop of the engine plastic cover and use a normal hand ratchet. No special tools required. It is in an awkward position but that's the way I do it. Makes the job easier climbing ontop of the engine and reaching down and plus you can do it on your own. No friend required 👍

Just to mention ! I did the glow plugs on mine the other day as was struggling to start on cold days, I heard that they can snap off in the head so I used plus gas A on the base of them every day for a week and did them without too much problem, put a bit of graphite grease on the the threads of the new ones and they went in like a dream. It now starts on the button no matter how cold it is ! Love the car it’s a keeper !

Good job, yeah the filter is the main quirk of this engine, its such a pain! It is actually produced by Fiat. That said, in my case it has been a really reliable engine. I have a 9-5, which has slightly more room at the back of the engine bay. So I can barely reach the filter by hand from above. First oil change I struggled for days to figure this out! It was really stuck and I got a bunch of tools as to try and find one that could fit in the space. I dont recommend this, but afterwards I've just hand tightened it at refitting and then maybe given it a slight final tug with a band tool. Sketchy, but the filter housing has 2 seals so it has never leaked in my case, and this makes it soo much easier to remove next year 😅

Great video guys, came in my recommended. It really confirms my decision. From the cars I've had, this is the first one I decided to leave the oil changes to a shop. What a pain :D In some Opel tutorials for z19dth, there is a place to put a hose in the oil filter housing, this prevents the stupid mess and drains straight to bucket. Great design anyway.

@@Otsomusic I recommend buying a new oil sump plug first before attempting. Mine was sooo tight that the head of the bolt rounded off. I had to use my special bolt extractor socket on it (13mm) hammered it on with mallet and then it came off with alot of strength 💪. Drained oil but then was left with a demolished oil sump plug bolt. Had to go pick a new one up for around £5 which I ordered online for collection at a car parts shop. Then came back and fitted and put new oil in. Also see if u can reach the oil filter with your ratchet and socket before attempting too. I could reach with a stretch and a few aches on my knees lol. Also it's best to replace the sump plug bolt anyway even if u don't have to damage the head of it like me. They're really cheap here in England so why not for peace of mind 👍

@@javaidsadiq5775I used your method this year, I remembered the comment here. Knees on the engine. Still insane but done 😛💪 2hrs about for first timer... I have one of those longer 32mm sockets and the basic 25cm t-handle, popped open with those. Then ratchet it out To pop the sump plug, and my knuckles, I used a looong breaker bar and two extensions, from behind the passenger tyre.
