Mine did the same in traffic, faulty crank position sensor, the extra heat from sitting was enough for the sensor to expand slightly and loose a connection inside, when it cooled a bit it would start again, might be worth a look 🤞

One thing I have learnt in life. Never fool around with a dodgy battery because it's going to strand you at the most inconvenient moment. Just go straight to the depot and get a new one even if you have to sell your granny to pay for it. I also find it hard to believe you set out on such a long journey without a basic tool kit. No matter how much stuff you have on board there must be a little space to stow it.

Have you checked the drain below the ECU yet, just noticed the dirt round the scuttle when you were changing the battery. They can block very easily and start filling up with water. After a first clean up you can do a 'spyhole mod' so you don't have to take the scuttle off so often, the how to is on the owners club forum Matt 🍻

Plenum drain blockage shouldn't actually be much of an issue on this car. All petrol 75/ZT models have a sealed ECU, so even if they do get submerged it's fairly rare for it to give any trouble. It's only the diesels that really suffer, one of the endless list of issues with the M47 powered cars. That said it's always best to keep the drains clear at all times! Electronics are generally happier when they aren't floating!

Some years ago my daughter was offered a place at the University of Kent so I took her down to Canterbury to take a look. Canterbury is a lovely little city but from Mid Wales it was a truly horrible six hour journey for someone who usually drives on traffic free rural roads. My daughter eventually went to The University of Liverpool which took less that two hours. We can take the car to Dublin or Edinburgh faster than we can drive to Kent. 🚙

It’s highly unlikely the battery was the cause of your breakdown. The sudden cut out and then restart after an hour or so is much more likely to be a crank sensor. The battery was obviously not in the best condition, but with a functioning alternator, was not your problem.

An underperforming battery is a relief to hear when your car is doing something scary. 75s are particularly finicky when it comes ro voltage! Also it sounds like the resistor on your cooling fan might've died, as it comes on roaring away at full tilt like that. It should have several speeds it clicks through! It may be worth checking if you car is one with the seperate resistor. The gold resistor upgrade may be a plan!

  • @johnmoruzzi7236

Yes noisy fan and aircon cutout is a classic fail… resistor fails so when aircon tries to drive the fan at half speed it fails after a bit. Solder in a replacement gold resistor. I just replaced the battery on my 75 1.8… fair price on a Bosch one from my local parts factor. And I had a misfire that I fixed by fiddling with the plugs and leads / coils. Also the coils have a short lead to 2 of the cylinders so that could be the issue not the coil itself.

Yep, had a similar toolkit from Argos 20 years ago. Added a couple of extra extensions to it and it’s been in every car since including company cars. Very useful little pieces of kit, been abused over the years and still going. Feel your pain with the breakdown services, RAC sent out an Escort van to tow my Rover SD1, 3.5 auto off the M40. Never mind that it’s a 30 limit to tow in neutral and it was probably half as much again in weight. Then get told that my alternator’s fried, which I’d told him when he’d turned up. Waited nearly 3hrs for a low loader to turn up after that. Cancelled that membership next day! Tried the AA, just as bad. Been with Start Rescue since they started, never had an issue, quick response and no fuss. Very professional.

I had a Corsa which would cut out when emgine was warm and wouldnt start until it had cooled down a little bit, turned out to be the crank position sensor. When it's on its way out the heat would either cause a bad connection due to expansion, or the resistance would be too high, hence why it worked when it cooled down again.

Two observations: 1. I thought that the 75 had lost an impressive amount of coolant! 2. The battery probably failed as a result of getting too hot whilst you were stuck in traffic. I ssem to remember that the Jag XJ12 had a fan cooled battery compartment, and other cars move the battery to the boot. A much better idea.

Good video and hope its a permanent fix enough to get to back home tomorrow. When out in an older car I have a little bag with a small socket set and various screw drivers, allen keys, adjustables, gaffer tape, cable ties, hammer etc. The one time I needed it was when I didn't have it as only going a few miles to the MOT..... I'm glad I'm not driving for a living anymore, I was adding 2 or even 3 hours to the expected journey times for the inevitable accident, roadworks or simply the 4 hour morning/evening rush hour hold ups. Good luck with the meet tomorrow, I was planning on attending but events have conspired against me. I await the video.

I had a similar problem with a Rover, it would just cut out but if you left it for a few minutes it would start no problem. The problem turned out to be a faulty oil pressure sensor, swapped that and the car ran fine for a while but I did buy a spare sensor and a spanner for next time. It worked every time.

Good to see a positive outcome (even if it meant spending a few £). You may be right about the coil pack, and heat soak causing it to fail, but I suspect a new battery is a good investment, especially given the previous one was perhaps a bit under-specified. As an aside, not only is Ponte home to licquorice, but the UK centre for Haribo and Maoam (they bought the licquorice company factory). There are quite a few really nice country villages not far from there. All stone houses, village greens etc. I imagine they may get a tad busy this weekend though!

My mates 75 that also had dying battery would also randomly cut out and it also had smaller battery fitted so I believe you should be fine now. Also you have a diagnostic mode in the cluster if you hold the trip reset button test 1 will be flashing what you need to do is go to number 19 it will the flash on and off click the button when its showing off and the Test 7 is your actual coolant temperature and test 9 is your voltage I find these to be the most useful ones.

Also, noticed there was no driver's grab-handle. Not sure what exact use they were but the blank doesn't look good, fitted one in my ZT to fill the space. The 75 facia always looks welcoming.

Had exactly that happen to my MG ZT 1.8T a few days after getting it on the first long run. Including failure to start and after a few minutes immediate restart. Check the Crankshaft Position Sensor and its wire and connections on the Bell Housing ASAP. ... I did that and replaced it with a known good one from another 1.8T. Immediate start and fine ever since six years later. The CPS's wires can be stressed by heavy handed servicing in past ownership and that upsets electrical continuity. The original fitted to the other ZT fine ever since. Newly acquired used cars can be like that on a "getting to know you" basis. Keep up the good stuff its appreciated. By the way. I fitted the same battery Brand and size you did .. off good old ebay delivered to my door post free at good price.

I flattened a perfectly good (4 year old) battery by giving it a top up charge on low. Totally flat. I used bat aid tablets on the battery and gave it a low charge and this fixed it. I can only assume that the cell plates buckled, touching each other after the acid was stirred up, possibly containing bits that helped with the discharge. Maybe yours has done something similar?

The Bosch alternators are strange. I have had the same sort of thing on the Volvo. Disconcerting to say the least. At first i was going to say ignition control module, then remembered it is a Rover not a Ford. The Ford Duraspark ignition control module can do this. No warning, it quits. Once cooled down, away it goes. Had that happen on several of my old Fords. Glad you got it sorted, though. Big relief. Definitely get the right coil pack for it. Many cars from the 90s and up have multiplexed wiring, so the feedback loop is all important.

The days of calculating journey times based on a 50 MPH average when a lot of M or A roads are used have long gone, safer using a 40 or even a 35 average now if M25 involved. You may then be early not late and be able to stop for another cuppa and a snag or two. Give it a few years and we may well be back to stage coach averages, 15 MPH, 18 for the mail coaches between cities.

Although having a good battery is a requirement in any car, this is not why you broke down, as the alternator would keep the engine running. From your description on the way the engine cut out, I would suspect the crank sensor.

If the crank sensor killed it, then there would be an error code for that logged. Power failure is the one thing that doesn't cause an error code, because the ECU doesn't have any power to log the error code.... It doesn't mean that it was the battery though. VWs used to be famous for failing power relays, and a loose connector or bad ignition switch will also do it.

  • @arthurdardalis

@@philip_christian ECU’s normally run on 6 volts. Have seen numerous instances where the crank sensor has not logged a fault. It is obvious though that the fault is electrical and thankfully not mechanical

Share your view on UK traffic , particularly on motorways, you get one minor accident and it turns into a major hold up for other road users. Still , on the plus side your breakdown was less of a major, and thanks to helpful people , notably the recovery man and staff at Halfords , you were soon motoring again .

You have my sympathy; last Sunday my car broke down, in a running lane of an urban dual carriageway with a 30mph speed limit. The problem was that the 30mph limit seems purely advisory and after three near-misses where people seem blind to hazard warning lights as well, at a point where the traffic stopped (there was a pedestrian crossing nearby) I put out my red triangle. Within a few minutes that had been driven over... so I called the police out to shield the car because it was quite clear that a collision was likely. Sure enough, within minutes a Mercedes stopped within six inches of my rear bumper. I glared at the two female occupants and one was about to kick off when I heard voices remonstrating with the driver - it was the police van sent to shield the car! The breakdown service towed me to one of their recommended garages. A week later, the garage hasn't even looked at my car as their workload has shot up massively.

Had this on a Jeep Cherokee, after a lot of head scratching by our local mechanic it turned out it was the crank position sensor, when the engine got hot, sitting in traffic etc, it would completely die. When it cooled down it was fine.

Just watching the video the now, sorry to see you had a breakdown but going by comments theres a happy ending with an easy fix, battery related!? When you said loud air con, do you mean the fan is running at high speed? If so its likely the resistor thats gone and fan is running at full whack constantly. I believe yours is the same as later models like mine Look through the grille and at around the 2 oclock positon there should be a resistor, original is silver and prone to failure, replace with a gold one from dmgrs and you will be all good. Easy fix just bumper off and solder new one in place of whats there 😊
