@@FarhadHakimov that works depending on the person for around a week at max, but even then the more often you do it the more you begin accrueing long term health damage from it. Deep sleep is one of the only times your body thoroughly shuts down and heals itself and does self maintenance such as correcting long term issues. It also starts messing with your brain chemistry because most humans are diurnal, and having a non-constant sleep cycle that breaks your circadian rhythm really fucks with most people, but sadly it happens so slowly over a long period that they dont notice it until they reach a point where they're like "Why do I feel like shit all the time?" and by then its usually too late because theyve already started doing long term damage to their bodies. Go figure, they then shrug it off and reach for more caffeine to fix the issue, because thats how addictions work. You try to use the cause of your problems, to fix your problems.

@@TheGregamonster Interesting, so you would say you can't turn two 3rd level pact slots worth 5 points each into filling up the sorcery points up to the cap of say 7? Most caps in DnD say that you can't have a resource above it obviously but then say nothing about the PC needing to be exact. Take overhealing HP for example: Sure, you can't go above max HP by getting healed by a heal greater in size than your missing health, but we all understand that it will just top you off, rather than ruling that people have to heal the exact amount or otherwise it isn't allowed.

Truthfully, I LOVE the idea of this being possible, in-universe. D&D's magic is so specific and weird that the idea of there being game-like loopholes in the rules fits really well, especially since it was canonically set up by Mystra, who was just sort of doing the best she could, and ESPECIALLY especially since this kind of thing has supposedly happened before. Wizards in the lore find all kinds of bizarre unintended consequences to magic, like lichdom, or the entire hellish arc that was Karsus' Avatar and the Spellplague. 'S cool. Still not gonna allow it at my table. Or, more accurately, I *MIGHT,* but the lack of proper rest because you're spending all your time constructing infinite power instead of sleeping is going to result in terrible, terrible things.

My favorite way to reign in Coffeelocking is to require the caster to roll a Wild Magic surge every single time they cast a spell while they have spell slots over their normal amount. Yes, even cantrips. Their body isn't supposed to be able to handle that much power, and the more they accrue 'extra' slots the more I like to find ways to portray their bodies struggling to handle the excess. Wild Magic surges, randomly transforming lower-level spells into higher ones in ways that aren't always cool ("Your Firebolt flares with unexpected, uncontrollable power and becomes something far more than you were anticipating - I need Alice, Carol, and Dave to roll Dex saves against Fireball"), and otherwise make their magic misbehave unpredictably. You wanna play with UNLIMITED POWAH, all righty - but it ain't gonna be easy.

*This* unless someone is attempting to break the game such as performing a irl-time one hour combo that let's them instant kill anything that isn't literally immortal, then it should be allowed. However, the DM should do anything in their power to balance it. Turning their exploit into something that's actually unfavourable due to potentially damaging themselves or others in the party make it so that the DM never actually prohibits the fun, but instead makes it not a valid strategy. Afterall, the point is not to win but to have fun & the scenario you proposed sounds like it would lead to a lot of unexpected & whacky scenarios which is fun.

The Xanathar rule really feels like a patch job, given that it's specifically stated to be for sleep derivation, but using these rules a creature can sleep more than 90% of the time and never long rest. Sleep 7 and a half hours, then go for a nice 30 minute run, really work up a sweat. Long rests can only include light activity, so this breaks that. Then just do it again. Using the Xanathar rules, chaining these together could kill a creature from not getting enough sleep, after sleeping over 22 hours a DAY.

(part of the Long Rest definition) "If the rest is interrupted by a period of strenuous activity-at least 1 hour of walking, fighting, casting spells, or similar adventuring activity-the characters must begin the rest again to gain any benefit from it." It's just a technicality, and does not refute the statement from Manic, but it's useful to remember. A single fight during a LR does NOT screw it up. It does mean people can be surprised and might want to reconsider their choice of campsite however. While obviously there's *no way* a single fight can last 1 hour, so my idea is that if you have one fight, and then another fight that happens any time during the LR that's more than 1h after the first one, then you say "you've fought for more than one hour" and that's when the LR is reset. Two fights within less than one hour (or even more, for that matter) are totally okay. Why? Let's say a battle does not allow you to properly sleep or rest for the following X minutes (w/e) as your adrenaline is f-ing with your system. This is too long. Bye.

That's actually an interesting concept with a slightly less cartoony twist. A positive energy plane that heals, causing new tissue growth in organisms at full health, effectively causing uncontrolled tumor formation. The organism would eventually become simply a mass of positive-energy sustained tumors growing infinitely, the deepest layers gradually getting compressed into a non-living state, as the top continues to grow upwards forever. Eventually some of the tumors may develop into organisms resistant to positive energy, creating an always-growing plane of flesh filled with alien creatures adapted to survive in such a world.

Or maybe it would work, but only on some abstract lump of the plane. Or maybe you might rule that you can only banish the parts of the organic tissue within the 60 ft radius of the spell. But then, does this tissue constitute being native to the positive energy plane, or still constitute some other plane as it's home? Imagine what having that many extra spells does to a magical creature whose body hasn't reached that threshold yet. Exhaustion kind of makes sense. Okay guys, hear me out, what if you just kill the coffelock? But seriously, rules as written, flexible spellcasting never says that you lose the additional spell slots from dying or being raised from the dead, so if you die from exhaustion or intentionally kill yourself and then a buddy casts reincarnate, you come back with a new body and therefore no exhaustion. The best way to make this work is if you also take 3 levels in barbarian and take path of the zealot, meaning that the reincarnation is free. If you rule that the raise dead spell brings you back without exhaustion or that dying from exhaustion removes exhaustion from you, then you can also take a level in wizard to learn contingency, take the divine soul sorcerer subclass for raise dead, make a contingency to cast raise dead on yourself, and then do it alone. Of course, you would also need to have enough levels as a spellcaster to get 5th level spells.

Read all about this build on reddit, and the guy had a really decently crafted argument as to why it should be allowed; passed it by to my DM who was running a hardcore survival game (no rez, no conjuration magic). We were part of a military organization as a unit of new recruits with like 160+ NPC's. In the first "week" of game time alone, I was able to cast cure wounds to keep Everyone that didn't die from an encounter at tip-top shape (was playing a Changeling Medic masquerading as a Warforged). It was so insane, I realized if I got access to third level spell slots (i.e., FIREBALL), I was gonna wreck this dudes campaign. Talked with the DM, he agreed to kill me off. Was a lot of fun to playtest and pilot the build, I think if I were to try to "fix" it and allow it in my own campaigns, i'd go with Gritty Realism on the rest rules; 8 hours to take a short rest, a week In Town to take a long, along with Volo's exhaustion rules.

I was given that by one of my players. After admittedly spending a day trying to figure out how to not allow it, I realized the book only says pact magic can be used to cast other classes spells and vice versa. @kagato23 Pact Magic and Spellcasting both generate "spell slots," and by the Rules As Written it is very clear that the spell slots from either Pact Magic or Spellcasting (whether sorcerer, paladin, arcane trickster, whatever) can indeed be used by the sorcerer's Flexible Casting feature. If a DM doesn't want to allow it, they don't need to spend a day trying to deliberately misinterpret the rules; they may simply say "No," or perhaps "No, because I don't trust you, I think you're a selfish sack of crap motivated only by the desire to outshine the other players in our group, instead of contributing to a memorable narrative." Kudos to that first commenter for working together with their DM & the rest of their group to maintain a fun story, even after discovering that the build didn't work well for their campaign.

Some clarification: Warforged *do* work, but only for the unearthed arcana versions, the others are vague and up to the DM. As well as this, despite being able to move spell slots and sorcery points back and forth, there is no mechanical way to achieve spell slots higher than what being a full sorcerer would give you, as you can only have so many sorcerery points at any given time. Oh, and celestial warlocks are also the most preferable subclass for both the reason you gave and for cure wounds; you can’t long rest and hit dice are limited, damage you take cannot be healed indefinitely by rests alone. EDIT: I got it wrong! All races and abilities that remove the need to sleep in fact also work, as Xanathar’s guide to everything lists that it is only the sleeping, not the long resting, that a lack of will cause points of exhaustion. Sorry for my confusion and thanks to the savvy people who pointed this out!

i noticed when taking a good look at sorcerer that it did not mention being unable to create slots higher than what you normally would have at that level, and i figured the same thing. However, at level 6, you have 6 Sorcery Points, and access to 3rd level spells at highest. It costs 2sp to make a 1st lvl, 3 for a 2nd, 5 for a 3rd, 6 for a 4th, and 7 for a 5th. So, at level six, you have enough sorcery points to create a temporary 4th level spell slot, along with being able to create a 5th level one early at 7th and 8th level. Plus, casting a spell that targets one more creature than usual, or does 1dWhatever more damage than you normally would be able to at the time, to me, falls in line with what meta magic does anyway. Hell, for a lot of spells it wouldnt be worth spending ALL of your sorcery points to upcast a spell by 1 level, minus a handful of spells. For those reasons, i firmly believe that you can, but it is ultimately up to your DM. I asked the one hosting my current game if he would allow it, and he said no. I disagree with his reasoning, but it's ultimately up to him, so I would just allow it in any game i DM, and see how it goes. However, I would say that you could not cast a 4th level SPELL (like Banishment) at level 6 since you havent learned that spell. Only upcasting.

Via Twitter, Crawford has confirmed that a 6th lvl sorc can spend all 6 sorc points to create a 4th level spell slot, and a 7th lvl sorc can spend all 7 points to make a 5th level spell slot. I've wondered how OP this really is. Assuming you need divine soul 9 and warlock 3 for greater restoration and Aspect of the moon (or warforged, but that's campaign specific) to get truly infinite spell slots, then you spend a bunch of downtime. So you're character level 12. What have you got? - infinite 5th level slots for sorc spells (and later warlock spells) - no higher level slots You can restore your HP with spells, but you can't regain any other long rest features. There are some nasty monster debuffs that last until you have a long rest, so just remember that long rests have plenty of benefits. Meanwhile a 12th level wizard still has a lot of spell slots, and they've just accessed 6th level spells; they're gonna get 9th level ones eventually, which you won't. Point is, coffeelock might still be broken, I'm not sure, but I don't think it's quite as obvious as "infinite spell slots means infinite good".

  • @storqe

To do CoffeeLock without any need for interpretation, play an Elf. Elves get the same benefits of 8 hours of sleep by meditating for 4, so you could Long-Rest, then chain 4 Short-Rests while everyone else is still in bed. Warforged still have to sit motionless for 6 hours as their Long-Rest, so you'll only get 2 Shorts out of them. Sleep and Rest aren't different because the book describes Long-Rests as sleeping and Short-Rests as tending wounds and reading so Aspect of the Moon does work (but you have to go Warlock 4: Pact of the Tome to get it RAW unless your DM doesn't mind you getting it early as an intended build). Lesser Restoration doesn't heal Exhaustion RAW although I agree that it should. But I personally love the coffee lock, even if it did give you infinite spells you still only get to cast 1 per turn. You don't get 16 Spell Slots. The Sorcerer page has a chart about how much different spell slots cost to create in Sorcery Points (SP) and only Warlock Slots regenerate with a Short-Rest so the amount of SP you get depends on your Warlock Levels. A level 2 Warlock has 2 Slots of 1st level that can convert to 4 SP per Short-Rest. Using the Elf version with 4 Short-Rests that gives you 16 Sorcery Points. That only converts to 8 1st level spell slots with no SP left for meta-magic. That's a lot more magic but its not 16 spell slots and its not anywhere near "infinite".

Artificers also eventually get Greater Restoration on their spell list and become Crackificers. A 17 Artificer/3 Warlock gets 2 days worth of Greater Restoration and make 16 potions every downtime (which grant 2d6 + your Intelligence modifier of temporary hitpoints when drunk). A better build might actually be 17 Artificer/2 Warlock/1 Wizard, as warlock doesn't count as a caster for multiclassing. With one level of wizard you gain another Greater Restoration, a bunch more spells, ritual casting, and one more 1st level slot per day (not long rest) from Arcane Recovery.

Greater Restoration built in, convenient short resting place regardless of what your party gets up to, resistance to Bludgeoning which is pretty common, access to entombing yourself in stone if your genie item isn't available. Depending on how the 10 minute short rest thing is ruled THAT could get really interesting. Clockwork Soul also grants abilities that take advantage of copious sorcery points and a suite of free spells up through 5th level. Snag a magic related feat to add in healing if you want. I was thinking of doubling down on some Strixhaven to get healing and an advanced familiar. Imagine like a partially machine genie man, the earthiness of the dao kind of ties it together. Alternately, consider using a cuckoo clock as the genie item and being the big crazy bird that comes out of it. The increased periods of rest followed by extreme magic activity kind of tie in with a sort of balance or order too, arguably. So that's neat.

Regarding the XGTE rules killing coffeelock, the relevant section (part of a subsection titled 'Sleep') is as follows: 'A long rest is never mandatory, but going without sleep does have its consequences. If you want to account for the effects of sleep deprivation on characters and creatures, use these rules. Whenever you end a 24-hour period without finishing a long rest, you must succeed on a DC 10 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion.' So, if you only read that second sentence, it would break coffeelock as you describe. However, taking in to account the title of the section and the previous sentence, they are clearly using 'finishing a long rest' as a mechanical marker for getting a 'good enough' night's sleep. Therefore, it is reasonable for abilities that remove a character's need for sleep would also negate that rule (which is optional in the first place!), since those characters by definition cannot suffer from sleep deprivation.

This. The rule is _about_ sleep deprivation, and it's an optional rule, so it doesn't make sense to apply it to someone who doesn't require sleep. The way it's worded clearly equates sleep with a long rest, even if it never actually calls them out as being the same thing.

That rule is merely _how_ sleep deprivation is simulated, but you obviously wouldn't simulate sleep deprivation on a character who doesn't require sleep. Instead of trying to twist the rules to say what you want them to, it's better to acknowledge what the rules say and create a houserule to "patch" the issue. Simplest is usually the best: just say you can only create _expended_ slots from sorcery points.

  • @MagicScientist

@@numb3rc The first paragraph is definitely not fluff. It is at the very least giving crunch about resting mechanics. 'A long rest is never mandatory' is crunch about resting mechanics in general. The second sentence gives two pieces of crunch. First, that the rule that follows is for simulating sleep deprivation, and second that it is optional. For comparison, let's consider the rules for suffocating in the PHB. They state that: 'A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds). When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it can survive for a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 round). At the start of its next turn, it drops to 0 hit points and is dying, and it can't regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again.' That's it. Notice that nowhere does it say that these rules don't apply to creatures that don't need to breathe, it's implied by the context. Similarly, the rule in XGTE about simulating sleep deprivation is implied to not apply to creatures that don't need to sleep. If we follow your logic, this would mean that races that don't need to breathe could still die of suffocation in a vacuum or underwater, and creatures that don't need to sleep could suffer from sleep deprivation.

I just had the most brilliant idea on how to use coffeelocks. In my world, there are vehicles and spaceships and such that suck magical power from the pilot to use. It could be a relatively common thing to have a coffeelock who forced a wild Magic awakening and captured a demon/elemental to force a pact with, and now before a trip they just don’t sleep for as long as they can hold it to build up the power for the ship.

My old housemate loved this concept, he called 'em Sorlocks. I found it to still be more or less balanced because while you do get pact slots on a short rest, and can convert them to sorcery points in order convert them back into regular slots, you're still losing half because it's 2 sorcery points to a single level 1 slot (+1 for each level above it, except for level 3 and above, which for some reason costs an extra point just to make it more confusing). So a level 10 character of 8War/2Sor would be able to convert all their short rest slots of 2 4th level into 8 sorcery slots, which is enough for 4 first level spells, or a single 4th level with 2 sorcery points spare. However, because of the Sorcery points rule of "You can never have more sorcery points than shown on the table for your level." That means at level 2 you can only get 2 points from a 4th level warlock slot, which means after breaking down your 2 level 4 slots, you can only get 2 level 1 sorcery slots. Not very worth it at all. If you have more levels in sorcerer to increase the sorcery point limit, that just means you have less in warlock, and thus lower slot levels to grind down. So you'll need a balance to be feasible, that and/or it's more of a late progression class combo. 2War/8Sor = 1 x Lvl1 p/short 5War/5Sor = 3 x Lvl1 p/short 8War/2Sor = 2 x Lvl1 p/short At the very least, if a player tried to abuse this by taking all those multiple short rests in order to bolster themselves with power, I think the being that game them power would see this as unreasonable theft of power or betrayal of their bargain and so there would be... repercussions.

Honestly, if you're going to be using all your warlock pact slots to create sorcery points, you *NEED* to be putting most of your levels into sorcerer, not warlock. A warlock8/sorcerer2 who tries to be a coffeelock is going to be completely useless.

Note: Sorlock is actually a more general term to describe multiclassing Sorcerer and Warlock. It is NOT a term specifically for Coffeelocks. The term Sorlock likely exists mostly because of the already broken nature of the multiclass even without Coffeelock (There are other combos, most notably involving Eldritch Blast, Invocations, and Metamagic, that by themselves already make the multiclass option quite broken).

Underrated comment. I saw the opening for this months ago on my character, but quickly figured out the math doesn't work out to equal UNLIMTED POWA due to the max sorcery points limiter. At best you have a handful of slots for low level utility spells, magic missile or shield.

This is true for when you are out on an adventure, but the idea is that if your campaign has downtime in between dungeon delves, you are using that time to build up spell slots. For example, it would be very reasonable for the party to take a week in town doing crafting or other downtime activities, and so the coffeelock is just locked in their inn room chain short resting and pooling power. Then if it ever runs out, they can still long rest and be no worse off than a regular sorlock (that is to say, still very good)

@@MagicScientist If you spend a week without sleeping you'll probably be around exhaustion 5. So the build gets a little more complicated. Xanthars says a DC 10 constitution saving throw to avoid a level of exhaustion after 24 hours of being awake, and the DC goes up by 5 for each additional 24 hours.

I think the interaction of Warlock/Sorcerer being able to restore sorcerery points and exchange pact slots for different level spell slots is pretty cool, but the whole exploitation of Coffeelocking is unhealthy at most tables. Most of these players don't want extra spells for better party support, they normally just want to spam Eldritch Blast.

i was going to outright ban it in my games because it makes handing out short or long rests at all a questionable actions as a dm due to letting a player do this makes them stupidly op. this kind of build strikes me as people trying to force "main character syndrom" in letting them have all the magic ever. what i ended up doing is i tell a player that wants to do this 2 things 1. chained short rests are NOT a long rest and you WILL take levels of exhaustion if you try and 2. your warlock spell slots can ONLY be used for casting spells and warlock class abilities

The simple solution is to rule that a sufficient number of short rests constitute an amortized long rest. From personal experience with biphasic sleeping, this seems to be the case, maybe a non cumulative con save after X short rests to avoid nodding off enough to constitute a long rest amortized over several short rests. This has other benefits for adventurers
