Motown is a ride I’ll gladly get on over and over again. You would spend a great seal of time covering the miraculous Motown sound. I highly encourage you to do so. I LOVE this song so much. I was in 7th grade (JRHS) in 1971 and had my first boyfriend, who I was with until senior year of HS. Oh my, what a time…and the music! Thanks so much for playing this one and keep going. It would be wrong to say "no mixing." Everything is mixed. That's just setting the relative volumes of all the various tracks. Now you go back to pre-Sgt. Pepper days when the Beatls and George Martin and Abbey Road Studios more or less invented multi-track mixing, then you really could say there was next to no mixing at all. But by 1972 when this song was recorded, multi-track recording was the standard.

This was one of the best R&B singles of 1971. Unfortunately, it was also the beginning of the end of the original members of the Temptations. I believe, Eddie Kendricks sang lead and the song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks as well as topping their R&B chart. The song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong was so sensational that even the Rolling Stones covered it seven years later on their classic album, "Some Girls"! A truly beautiful song from one of the greatest R&B/Pop groups of all time. Thanks, Jay & Amber, for sharing this classic with us.

Although when this was recorded, David Ruffin had already been fired. I agree, It was the end of an era with the Temps that I grew up listening to. But it was the start of a new era for them (starting with “Cloud Nine” and “Psychedelic Shack”). In my opinion, they had so many hits like this in the 1970s with out David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, they were hardly missed, especially since both had solo careers that produced some great songs!

The Temptations had a tempestuous history within their line-ups but from the late 60s through to the mid 70s their music had so much variety but every piece was so rich, classy and beautifully crafted. His spirit is in many a vocal chords… 🙏 He dated a woman named Carol who lived across from my parents. He always stopped by to say hi to my mom and dad.. They all stayed in the same neighborhood in Detroit when my mom was with Motown.. He bought Carol the first BMW I’ve ever seen lol.. Fun fact: His nickname was “Corn”… Because he loved cornbread lol!

Motown was very significant. At a time of tremendous poverty, racial strife, rioting, civil rights abuses- they indisputably demonstrated the talent and genius of black artists. They looked good, knocked out hits and opened eyes.

Eddie Kendricks on the lead. David Ruffin was gone when this was recorded. He left the group around 1968. This was recorded around 1971. They did this song on The Ed Sullivan TV show but they were sitting down when they performed it. This was Eddie's last recording with them before going on a solo career. The voice switch up in the middle on the bridge was Paul Williams who also left the group after this song.

Other great Temptation songs: Get Ready, Can't Get Next To You, My Girl (OBVIOUSLY), It's Growing, Cloud Nine, Ball of Confusion (That's What the World is Today), Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, Psychedelic Shack, among others. EDIT: I love Eddie Kendricks's voice as well. I can't remember if Eddie is singing this song or Otis. I know it's not David Ruffin. I think it's Eddie. I should KNOW this because I prefer Eddie to David.

The Temptations came together as a result of two other bands breaking up. Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams came from a group called The Primes, which inspired the formation of a girl group called The Primettes, who would later change their name to The Supremes. The Primes disbanded in 1960 after Kell Osborne moved to California. Mooch Harrell and Richard Street left The Distants that same year. Eddie Kendricks auditioned to join them and got the job, but said that he and Paul were a package deal. This new lineup was originally named The Elgins. They auditioned with Motown in 1961 under this name, but there was another group using the name so they quickly came up with The Temptations. Paul sang lead on their first two singles. Eddie sang lead on their first single to make it on the Billboard R&B chart, (You're My) Dream Come True, which peaked at number 22. It was a strong regional hit in many different areas of the country so it was enough to land them a spot on the Motown Revue. Their first Billboard Hot 100 number one hit was My Girl in 1964. Just My Imagination was their third out of four number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and the last single recorded with Eddie Kendricks, who sang lead, and Paul Williams, who battled with sickle cell disease and allegedly committed suicide with a gun almost 3 years after this song was released. His family believes he was a murder victim and that the crime scene was staged to look like a suicide because the evidence shows the gun was fired twice although the body only had one bullet wound, and the coroner's report says that he was holding the gun in his right hand when he shot himself in the left side of his head. He had an extramarital affair with Winnie Brown, a hairdresser who was a cousin of Florence Ballard of The Supremes. In addition to their affair, he also invested startup capital for her hair salon and clothing boutique. His son Kenneth, who was 11 years old when Paul died, became a cocaine addict who got 15 to 30 years in prison for second degree murder in 1989 for killing his 87 year old great aunt. After serving more than 20 years in prison, he filed lawsuits against his sister and Universal Music Group for his share of his father's estate and past and future royalties.

One of my favorites by them, " Papa was a Rolling Stone ".

That was iconic singer and tenor Eddie Kendricks. He, David Ruffin, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams were the “Classic 5” Temptations of the 60’s. Eddie did iconic hits like The away You Do The Things You Do, Get Ready, You’re My Everything, I’m Gonna Make You Love Me with The Supremes, etc. etc. Dennis Edwards replaced David in 1968 and they still were in their prime up until early 70’s when Eddie and Paul left.

Our neighbor was a little old black church lady with her grandson “Billy Holiday” (like the old black singer) he was 17 but looked like a man, was a bulk of muscles (everyone called him monster) he was like a bad ass young Mike Tyson everyone was afraid of him, but he was always cool to me a long haired hippie kid. He use to always hang out in his converted garage (red shag carpet couch coffee table old 60s tv/record player console, refrig. Red lights. He’d always wear wife beater t-shirts, overalls and white fuzzy slippers with his hair in braids like Buckwheat. This was his favorite song He would play this song loud and just hang in his garage with the door open. Billy I hope life was good for you. Your hippie neighbor from the late 60s
