Offset backing maneuver at Tn Truck Driving School

Doing the offset backing maneuver at cdl school. Only messed up once but still did pretty good for the first time. Yes I know there is a light out. And yes I know I hit a cone. But for NEVER being behind the wheel of a tractor trailer and NEVER backing one up, I still completed the exercise like I was suppose to do.

    I just started offset backing Thursday at my school, and for someone who has never driven a combination vehicle, it was whooping my ass lol. But I've been watching g a lot of videos such as this and have a better understanding of where I was going wrong. So come Tuesday when I go in, I'm feeling pretty confident that I'm going to knock it out. Thanks for posting.

    as a truck driver was 28 years Driving Experience 4 million miles accident-free certified I can tell you that backing from the offset side is not easy. for a new student who did a relatively good job the main point in being take your time and do not get in a hurry you will do fine

    I gotta do my road test on Monday and I'm still having problems with offset backing, it's definitely not easy. I heard the key is to keep the cones and the side of the trailer in your mirror. Once you lose sight of the trailer and cones you run into trouble, it usually means you're not backing towards the spot.

    let me just say that when i posted this video i knew there would be good comments and of course bad comments, as with any video. However, i posted this video so that i could later view it once i have some experience and to see my progression from when i first started driving with absolutely zero experience. This is how i motivate myself to become a better and safer driver because i can see my progression in this career. To those who had good comments, thank you. And to those who had bad comments, thank you. everyone learns differently and sees every situation in a different way. you have to find something that motivates you in your own way. this is mine. cheers.

    Owners don't spend lots of money on trucks at schools. Most trucks on the yard are not street/highway driveable. Maybe one or two are ready so student can do driving test after passing everything else. Inexperienced drivers. No need to buy new trucks. And as long as you do your pre trip correct is all that matters.

    Either he's mirrors off or he's turning too sharp. Because it was too far to the right on the left all set and now it's too far to the left on his offset could be the mirrors or something. Because that does play with your judgment.

  • @williamvangorden44

    @williamvangorden44

    Or he's trying to figure it out through the mirrors and in the mirrors are giving him a different feedback or he's not adjusting the mirrors to him not making any excuses but that does play with your judgment. Because it's either going to put you too far to the right or it's going to put you too far so left and if that keeps going on consistently then there's some kind of issue either with the mirrors people like to think otherwise but that does play a big part because you have to look at it through those mirrors if they're off slightly you're going to be off.

    You can not see the driver's front wheels and the shadow kills most of the view of the tractor wheels. It is best viewed from the side of the truck that the driver is backing to and in front of the vehicle so you can see his front wheels turn.

    Brake light out is nothing. one of the trucks we used in the range in my school only had 13 tires (with 14 wheels), and the driver's side door latch didn't work from the outside. You had to reach through the window to open it. but the trucks we took on the road and tested in were in good shape.

    Mike Hardin those trucks don't have to be perfect. I wouldn't buy new trucks for inexperienced drivers. Don't see why people don't understand that. Just do your pre trip as if it was a street/highway ready truck.

    +The Accidental Trucker my brother he is an old school trucker, he may only be 30, but his dad was an independent trucker for 35 years and he taught my brother the correct way to drive a truck. The new school truckers, need to be taught by an old school truck driver on the proper way to drive a truck. Like for having to get out of your truck to check, my brother doesn't even do that. The reason I'm using my brother as an example, is because I'm only 15

    +Dylan Meinhardt If you talk to a lot of the old school drivers that aren't completely full of crap, they will will tell the when they started out thy had to GOAL...especially on a blindside. There's a TA on I-40 exit 37 you should visit to see my point. It is one of the worst parking lots in the I have seen and the every driver that's parks in the spaces up against and facing the road use at least two spotters. It's near impossible to get in there without a spotter and most people still GOAL for themselves. At that place its like an unwritten rule that after you get into your spot you hang out in front of the trucks and wait to help others into the space. I guess when I said "idiotic old school training method" what I really meant was stupid. Over confidence is typically why backing accidents happen.

    +The Accidental Trucker I'm not trying to insult you or anything, mainly because I don't have my Class A CDL yet because I'm only 15. Anyway, a lot of the old school truck drivers, like my brother, are a lot better skilled at driving and backing than most of these new school trained ones. There are some good new school trained drivers that have a lot of skill and can back up really well. I don't have any physical proof of my brother actually doing this, but he said he's been told by people that he can't get in his truck and trailer into certain areas, but he proved them wrong, but my brother says he has done a lot of things. I'm not calling him a liar either because he then later proved some of the things he said he could do. But all it depends on the driver and the drivers skill when it comes to backing up.

  • @theaccidentaltrucker6707

    @theaccidentaltrucker6707

    +Dylan Meinhardt Yes, some are better than others old or new school. But when you watch a video from a truck driving school you also have to keep in mind that they are teaching people how to pass the CDL test not how to be a trucker. That's what the time spent in training at a company is for. problem there is that some companies train for two weeks and then that person a trainer. the company I went to after truck driving school is VERY strict on training and procured good, safe drivers which is why I spent 7 weeks in a trainers truck that had several years of experience. TDS = Pass test not learn to be a trucker.

    it's easy as shit...lol....off set to the left: 12 oclock turn to the right... watch your spot mirror until end of the trailer covers the mid cone, hard right to the left to straighten the tractor with the trailer... straight back watching the middle cone with the spot mirror(left mirror)... stay at least a foot away when you get the ass of the trailer in the box then 12 oclock turn to the left for 4 secs then hard right to straighten up, then straight back...lol

    Thank you. And if it's easy for individuals. I don't see why they talk crap to those that have a difficult time. Geez it's not that hard to be encouraging.

    Jay Class don't bother explaining anything to that super trucker. Hundreds of thousands of them out there think they are the best at everything, but great at none.

    +Kevin Stanley Obviously she's not sure where her " ass " end is. Looks like they want a continuous backup. Great job Girl!

    +Kevin Stanley i agree, every situation is different but if you stick to one pattern 9 times Outta 10 that's what's going to alleviate a lot of problems

    And to add to my previous comment i do not have a cdl ive grown up around trucks my dad has been in dirt work growing up so i know the concept of maneuvering its drilled and drilled daily... and then!?!??! When i get in the seat it just seems to kinda snowball into a series of mistakes due to like your situation improper placement " the set up " of the trailer... and then people starimg yellimg talking shhh and to top it off other trucks getting traffic hammed because of my errors ..... but in those moments when your freaking out and all shakey.... tell yourself to snap out of it calm down and get out and look to assses the situation make the correction and get the task complete.... then move on.... and remember do not react to anyones negative comments or jeers... they hate themselves not you! I have to tell myselfe that almost every day to keep my sanity
