This is EXACTLY why I sold my Tacoma for my JKU. Manual transfer to 4WD is beyond better. I had the same issue with my truck.
I’ve been off roading Ocala NF. for 30 yrs. as well as the rest of Florida and other states. My 2010 Taco has never had an issue with 4 x 4 high or low nor did my 1998 Taco. 2010 manual says you must put at least 10 miles a month on the 4 x 4 to keep it lubed. Hearing about these problems with the 4 x 4 makes me leery of buying a new one.

The transfer case is stuck. Had nothing to do with shifting on the fly or not. Enjoy that snow! It's going to be in the 80's this week.
Not sure if anyone said this but you can air down your tires to around 18 PSI and it will give you a longer footprint in your tires to help on soft ground
