Off Road Build - 1st Gen Tundra Overview - Lift, Tires, Camper Shell Buildout

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is Derek's build - a 2006 Toyota Tundra fit for off-roading, camping, and Overlanding. He's got quite the buildout on this 1st gen tundra and I go over all the mods that make it great. From his Icon lift and Toyo Tires to his big brake upgrade and camper shell build-out, there's a lot to admire about this truck. This is a great example of how to build out a first gen tundra! I really like the lift and tire setup, as well as what he's done with his camper shell!

    My bumper search began last summer, 2022. I was on a camping trip up HWY1 northern California. BLAM!!!! I hit a deer. Jumped out from right to left, I saw it spinning 360's down the road with all four feet up in the air... toast. OMG... the first things that go through your mind. The deer is toast, how bad did it f/U my truck??? Almost afraid to pull over and look. The front of Toyotas are plastic. I pulled over eventually. Thought I was going to be going home at the best. Only a bent front licence frame. Hit at the perfect angle. If I hit anything now I will win.

    That cap is awesome. I have a pretty basic Leer on my 2013 Crewmax Rock Warrior. Unfortunately, Crewmax caps are next to impossible to find on the used market so I was limited to my basic model with just the slider windows and the ugly rear door. I'm even trying to get rid of the cap bc I just don't like having to crawl all the way in the bed to grab something. Really like how this truck is setup.

    I have an 04 Tundra Extended cab. Bought it new off the showroom floor in March 2004. 165,000 dealer serviced miles. It is not feasible to sell this truck and buy something new. I have done the Bilstein 5100 upgrade, I had a Snug Top fiberglass cab high cap. (Still have it if somebody wants to buy it) Replaced this summer with a custom GFC camper. Stellar Built in Nor Cal Sacto is the GFC installer/dealer. If you have a Toyota, that place is evil. What they do.. Now I have custom front/rear steel bumpers with a 10,000 lb winch. Upgrading the front 5100/OEM spring combo now to 6112's. A complete front suspension rebuild. New lower ball joints/bushings, New OEM tie rod ends, Shopping around right now for the best upper control arm replacement. Just got the new 6112's, new shock tower caps. After 165,00 miles. Making an old truck better than new. The cost of 3/4 monthly car payments on a new Yota..

    Tyler... just bought a 02 Tundra 1 owner from Boise area with the access cab... owned several Toyotas !! like a dozen and this is my favorite by far... having said that I just sold a newer Avalon Limited '20 model.... the new stuff just doesn't do it for me... even if it gets over 40 mpg... so much plastic and inferior parts... aside from the JBL stereo, one of the best audios I've ever experienced! Probably should have chopped the Frame and put it in my living room. 🤣 Hope Toyota reels it back before they walk off the cliff with the 4 cylinder turbo engines... guess the 4runner is still made in Japan and not hybrid yet.... Disclaimer, I'm not a hybrid hater... I just drive vehicles way too hard at times to qualify to be a hybrid owner. Having said that this 4.7 isn't a high revving motor but a torque motor... the 2 / 1 Milly examples were used extensively with pay loads... love this motor and one of the best ever made... and I step in this vehicle and realize it just wants to maybe run 2.5 grand tops on the rpms to move through traffic and tugs every so gracefully!! My neighbor literally said that truck has a V8? epic moment! This video/truck is amazing, and mine is nothing like this truck, but again I don't need all the amenities to have fun in the woods... having said that... this truck is not only a daily driver, and off road adventurer but also a date night example (in Idaho). Mine accomplishes the same with my dynamic personality and dialogue... lol If you're interested? I would love to do a video when I'm finished with my truck... reach out to me... seriously, all jokes aside!! I'm on Tundras.com as 02TundraIdaho and have a specific discussion on it at 02 Tundra SR5

    in regards to the front brake upgrade, my understanding us that Toyota began putting larger front brakes on the tundra in the second half of 2003, so tundras made during and after that time already have the larger brake set up as Toyota found the original set up was not sufficient. They created a retrofit package that could be used to upgrade the previous models to the larger brakes. my question is therefore, is the brake set to mentioned for the Lexus better/ larger than the later 2003+ models already have? i have towed a horse trailer over 6k pounds through mountains with no problem with the factory Toyota tow package and this trailer brakes... and i run 265/70/r17 tires on stock limited oem wheels

  • @208Tyler

    @208Tyler

    Жыл бұрын

    You’re correct. Toyota upgraded the brakes, and the brakes from a late mode tundra would retrofit perfectly onto my tundra, provided I trimmed the dust shield. However, the Lexus brakes are even bigger than those. It’s another big step up in performance, as these brakes are from late model vehicles with higher performance OEM brakes. It may not be necessary for a lot of use cases, but it’s a good addition when adding larger tires. In the case of this black pickup, he’s on 34” tires and the brake upgrade makes sense from a safety standpoint.

The best way I can describe the change is like going from trying to stop a dump truck with tiny brakes to now feeling like a small suv that stops quickly, easily, and overall more pleasurable to drive. The tundra (both access and double cab) are about 75” long. So more than 6’ but less than 6.5. Slight difference in length between the two cab configurations but it’s only about an inch. Hope that helps

    Dumb question but you just need a lift for the tires not the wheels right? I plan on getting either Tacoma, 1st gen thundra, or 4Runner, one of the first things I want to do is throw the trd wheels on lol

  • @208Tyler

    @208Tyler

    Hey! Good question! So, normal suspension lifts like this don’t exactly help you “fit” tires. Larger tires may clear during normal driving when you add a lift, but they’ll still hit the fender liner when you hit bumps and/or turn the wheel. I explain lift kits and tire clearance here, check it out. A lot of the principles in this video still apply to Tacomas and 4Runners since their suspension geometry is super similar kzread.info/dash/bejne/imRqp9F8m7zff9I.html And yes, tire size is what causes problems, you can fit almost any wheel size stock as long as it’s not super wide.

    @@208Tyler okay so I should be good to throw on these trd wheels without having to lift the car, I see almost everybody who buys a secondhand truck put a lift on it so I wasn’t sure lol thanks for the reply btw

    @@brian1192 In general, yes they should work fine. Depending on the truck and the tires you intend to mount to them, it's possible you would need wheel spacers. I can't vouch for the tacomas and 4runners, but on the tundra you want 4.5" backspacing if you're going up to about 32 or 33 inch or taller tires,
