Off Grid Experiment: Can We Achieve Self Sufficiency?

Ойын-сауық

After weeks of hard work, our poly tunnel is nearly ready! 🌱 This project means a lot to us; it's not just about gardening but also ensuring our family's food security in our off-grid life.

Wheelbarrow rides full of joy and laughter that fill our hearts for days ever after. The explosive waves that the birds create with their beautiful, synchronised flying can take your breath away. Thank you for sharing such wonderful moments with us 👍

Not watched one of your videos for a while, just catching up. This and the one about bug factories are very good, thank you. I've got a 10x15 polytunnel and seven 1.2x3.6mtr raised beds outside. Trying to stretch the growing season in the Peak District (1000ft, cold, wet). Second year of being self sufficient in Garlic(including keeping best for next years planting) and first in onions. Tomatoes, beans and asparagus also good. Got to get a third crop to self sufficient this year, probably beans I think. Keep up the videos, they are great.

Discovered you guys this evening, what a great find 🤗 We plan on dehydrating and preserving this year, I alway give a half hearted attempt and really want to rely less on powered freezers, ect. What heater do you use in your mini greenhouse if you don't mind me asking 😊

We were treated to nightly murmations with the added bonus of the starlings roosting in trees in our garden. All night, they chatted away, just beautiful. The simplest things in life are the most precious ❤

Thanks for sharing the Starlings murmuration, which reminded me of my days back in the late 80's and early 90's on Brighton beach. The palace in Brighton at that time was cover in plastic sheet into which they would roast, thousands of them and they would also use West Pier. It best when a bird of pray gets involved because they cause the birds to turn and twist making holes in the patterns. Lapwings where even more interesting to watch as they would singing whilst chasing one another in flocks like this. Its a rare sight now never seen one since the 70's unfortunitly.

Good job. We've not been great at preserving either; so it's a big focus for us this year. In previous years we've just relied on our 2 freezers, but we're trying to widen our range of approaches. Food security is so important. As I'm sure you're aware, we're headed for collapse in the not too distant future. I used to think we'd have a decade or two, but the signs are ominous and it's stirred a bit of urgency in us, so we've decided to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in! Great channel. Keep em coming!

We’re in exactly the same position. Pretty good at growing, not so good at preserving. We relied on the freezers too and need to try different things. What sort of thing are you planning to do? Completely agree with you about the way things are headed. We are feeling the urgency too 👍

@@The_OffGridFamily We've bought a dehydrator and a pressure canner already and one of my tasks for this year is to make one of those fancy pantries that preppers in the USA use to keep all of their canned goods in. We did a bit of sun drying last year (we're based in SW France so sun isn't really in short supply) and it worked really well, so we'll be doing more of that this year. We've got chickens, guinea fowl, ducks and quail on our smallholding, so I'm also looking into glassing eggs. We'd also love a freeze dryer but boy are they expensive! Our aim is to have at least 1 years' worth of food stored by end of next year, so we've got our work cut out. It's a good job we've been making an effort to stay alert to the (metaphorical) gathering storm clouds, otherwise we might not have been minded to act with due urgency. Doomerism seems to be entering the mainstream nowadays with the UK government's new Resilience Framework (which reads like a national prepper manifesto and demonstrates how much they're aware of what's going on in the world - despite their positive public messaging) and the WEF's 2024 Global Risk Report which is just jaw dropping in its conclusions. What used to be considered a fringe pursuit seems to be bleeding into the public consciousness, which I guess isn't a bad thing. They've certainly motivated us!

I have been privileged to witness huge Budgerigar murmurations in outback Australia. The vivid colour of budgies is something to behold. Once, while driving along a remote road, a flock of budgies started flying across in front of me. I had to stop and it took a full five minutes for the entire flock to pass in front of me. Here is a sample of what I'm talking about, but imagine something many times larger... kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2mV1rhsg7Caic4.html

Maybe the batteries and gear should be moved into the main home so they are always at a comfortable temperature. They would perform much more efficiently and you'd stop losing charge due to the cold temps. If you really hate the noise from the inverter, perhaps have it just outside the wall so it's in its own little weather resistant enclosure. What's the aversion to running the generator in the winter? If you know you need it, during the winter months then why not just run it as needed. You seem like you dread having to run it. Just curious.

We live in a static caravan so don’t have capacity to bring the batteries into the house. We do run the generator as and when we have to but it is expensive 😩

Nicely done… however, careful what you say and how you say it. When the entire world turns to war and other issues, you’ll be the remembered as the “prepared” person for every looser dead beat relative and ex friend that couldn’t be bothered to pre prepare. The trick is… tell no one

I have been telling people (which i think you should), with the caveat that if im right and they turn up hungry and unprepared, they are getting shot. Including my family... ED: Ive found its quite an effective way of hammering the point home and some of these people have since started actually putting food away. Its not hard to up your weekly shop from £50 to £60

@@ohnoitisnt ok, I see your point, and your points are valid- however, no matter what you do, you’ll still have some relative or neighbour that still won’t be prepared. When SHTF happens, everyone will remember those who are prepared. That’s why I have buried and hidden my food/ preps… absolutely no one at all knows that I’m prepared… good luck 👍👍👍

Grow you're food in stacked rows using drain guttering. Link it all together via pipe works . . . Get 3/4x the food for same space .
