The gaming scene in the early 80′s was, to put it bluntly, a complete f**kin' mess [feel free to uncensor that]. Too many consoles, too many games, nobody could keep up with it. Some consoles, such as the Atari 2600 and Collecovision, stood as a peak among valleys. However, some of the best consoles were the ones somewhat hidden beneath the surface. One of these consoles was the Odyssey II, created by Magnavox in the late 70′s, was memorable for several reasons. In this video, Mike Matei and James Rolfe whip through a couple games and give you their thoughts.

You have to Push the button in Spinout for high speed. That game was highly competitive. Played for hours!
Love your guys chemistry in these old videos. Looks like you're having a blast! I hope to see you two collaborate again in the future.
I love Mike's face after asking "You can put any word" like "Oh yeah I know what to put"
The Odissey II was called VideoPac in europe and distributed by Philips; in 1983 they made a powered up version that adds an higher resolution static graphic background. Has also a couple of conversions from coin-op like Turpin.

Simone Bernacchia It appears that the original Magnavox console was released in Europe, though it doesn't seem it had much support or attention. Going into speculation territory, I imagine this comes down to distribution of what was still an American-only brand (Philips would buy Magnavox a couple years later). Maganvox was evidently big only in the US. I didn't actually know they went back as far as they did, as in my lifetime, Magnavox has always been basically a domestic house brand for Philips or Funai (licensed by Philips).

These two are one of my fave duos of KZread, without them I doubt many people would care about getting back into retro gaming, James and Mike, if ever I get the chance to meet you guys in person, the rounds are on me!
Boy watching this video sure makes you thankful we've got the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X already. The Odyssey 2 feels like being suffocated while the PS5/XBSX feel like fresh oxygen.
Had one of these! Got it from a Good Will as a kid to relive our 2600 memories. Crazy thing is, is that I was born in 1987. The 7800 was our first console and I had the privilege to play 2600 games as my first. My uncle still had his 2600 too. We loved old games much like people do today, before we were even adults.

i can remember playing this console. along with all the other old ones. they were dirt cheap in the 80s when i was a kid.. so my mom would bring them home.. before 88 when i got my NES>. wish i still had them all. rock on.
James and Mike play is my favourite series from Cinemassacre. I like the casual conversation about games with none of the forced anger.

I played the same multi cart (crypto/speedway) for years at my dad's TV shop while growing up. Lots of memories.
I had Quest for the Rings, I remember it came with a bunch of coins, map and other stuff I can't remember when you bought the game. It came in a big box. Oh what memories.
"Daddy, can I watch your videos?" "NO NEVER ASK ME THAT AGAIN." ^I always find it kind of funny to think of parents of kids who make stuff like this that has a lot of bad language in it will say to their kids when that inevitably comes up.
Kasey's Crazy Chase is a Voice game. When you have "THE VOICE" it talks to you. But you quickly get annoyed with the constant "run... Lookout... " over and over but in the day it was cool it talked to you.

Dominic Racca Yeah, but for me I loved the wink and a laugh when you finished eating the uh, Ratterpillar. That was directly aimed at Atari, who had sued them over the original KC Munchkin. Another Voice game I enjoy is P.T. Barnum's Acrobats. Only game from that time to verbally insult you :). Still have my Odyssey 2 and The Voice along with around 14 game carts. A fun but virtually forgotten console from the period.

IMO it's well worth it. The Odyssey 2 doesn't go for very much, and sometimes you can get them with The Voice as a set, along with some games. Most of The Voice titles tend to be pretty cheap as well.
Thanks alot for showing this console! Its the first and oldest piece i own, and played it as a kid too. Since im in EU mine is called Philips VideoPac. There are a few really fun games that i wish you covered. Kepp it up, love the channel!

I really enjoy these chill laid back episodes of just you guys hanging out. It's always funny to see the pissed off angry video game nerd side of James, but I enjoy seeing this side a lot if not more.
😀👍Thanks for bringing back some of my child memories!! I had gotten Odyssey for Christmas...everyone else ..pretty much had Atari or a few Intellivisions. Great Flash back from my past ..TJANK YOU.
I'm glad they did this. I saw the Odyssey 2 console in the background in the nerd episodes and kept hoping for it to pop up. My first console also. Same first game I can remember playing as well.
As much as I love my 2600, I gotta say I really love the O^2. The games are very addictive and the imagination part is what makes them great.

@spencersix295

that is true. but there are millions of other games you can play on PC. And PC has faster loading time and better graphics. And without consoles, PC games would be 10 times better because the consoles won't be holding back their true potential.
@spencersix295

Yeah, i guess your right. If you wan't to be a PC gamer, you have to have a good PC which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. Not everyone can afford that so they have 400 dollar consoles.

3:09 Somewhere, Pat the NES Punk looks up and says, "I sense a disturbance in the Force. And by the Force, I mean the Four-Score."
I had that when I was a kid.
YOU'RE 30?! Never would've guessed.. And Congrats on the kid, they're going to have the best childhood EVER.
First game I ever played on Odyssey II was baseball at a friend's house. I ended up having one given to me around the time SNES came out but I still kept playing it even after getting the SNES. Had most of the games you were playing. Wish I had one now to show my kids.
Calm and informative. I like it.
my brother owns an odyssey II and he would always play it, that it untill the PS1 Came out

The helicopter rescue animation seems like one of those animations where if you see the helicopter turning with the front or with the back towards you (it's ambiguous from the animation) you use either half of your brain more... or something!
I had this and a lot of those games. It was great
So when does Batman Star Wars come out?
I bet even this one has more exclusives than Xbox One lol.
Wow. That brought back some memories. I actually miss that system now. I remember having a first person space game where you shot ships. Kind of like the old vector graphics star wars game? "Space Command" maybe? I can't remember.
I had one as a kid, I remember they were going to do a multiple world adventure game but it was blown away by the Atari 2600 back then.

I have one sitting somewhere in a cellar at my mother's house back in Germany, There it's called Videopac G7000 and I have (almost) the same games but with German titles and they came in sturdy plastic cases that were similar to music cassette cases. I had an Odyssey II back in the day and no, we never put it on our lap to play. Always in the middle of the floor and if you needed to use the keyboard, you'd just kneel in front of it.
Just got one of these complete in box with 10 games for like, 30 bucks! Stoked to hook it up and play it!
This was the first console I played also. Here in Brazil things and information used to be delayed, this was around 85-86, at my uncle's. My father liked it so much he bought a Intelivision.
Awesome thanks 👍
the music is awesome in these videos!
I LOVE THE CONSOLE FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN IN THIS VIDEO!
que tremendo video juego para la decada de los 80 yo lo disfrute muchissimo
Damn I loved that console as a kid.. It was so sweet.
I love the Odyssey 2!
Quest for the Rings had a whole box set that came with it, complete with a board and game pieces. That was such a great game way back when. Wished I could have seen Attack of the Time Lord on this video too.

James and Mike! Great combo fellas! ;)
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this but when playing Spinout, press and hold the Action button to speed up. The O2 was the first system I owned, Christmas gift 1979.
We still have a working o^2 with the voice add-on. UFO, and Pick axe Pete were my favs :)
at 06:09 the background music is from a C64 game called Panther. It was an awesome game with an awesome soundtrack.
The music at 03:42 is the music from the Atari 800 version of the popular ZX Spectrum game "Jet Set Willy". This music was composed by a Mr Rob Hubbard who went on to compose music for many other games such ground-breaking "Populous" by Peter Molyneux.
I had a videopac (aka odyssey 2) which was released by philips. It was amazing, had so many games and such
The first game i ever played was Super Castlevania IV on the SNES. I stuck with it and Mariocart until i was 6 years old. Then i started playing CoD :D
Congrats james to your new child. Awesome review guys!!! :)
I saw Odyssey II and KNEW that I had to watch it!
Wow, I lived at the time and we owned an Odyssey 2 and so did some of my friends ( most owned an Atari) and I never, ever even once saw anyone place the game console on their lap.
I first played a video game at age 5. It was Super Mario Advance on the GBA. Still have the original system and cartridge to this day.
Kinda funny they talked about Godzilla in Star Wars and now we have Rouge One that was directed by the same guy who did the 2014 Godzilla.
First game I ever played was Omega Race for the Commodore VIC-20.
First Game i ever played was legend of zelda oot for n64 gold cart. That was the stuff back then
Ultimate Avengers vs the Sith Lords! Now that's a movie I wanna see ;) Great video AVGN and Mike, very enjoyable to watch especially since I never owned one of these systems. 29 and the oldest system I ever played was my uncles 2600.
Nice to see Mike repeating some of the dialogue from the Board James episode Crossfire as here you can actually hear what he is saying, but in that episode most of his dialogue was inaudible.
Now that brings back some nostalgia. This was my first ever gaming system back when I was like 3 or 4. I can remember playing some of those exact games too. Only thing that would have made this vid better is if the assortment of titles shown off here had included my personal favorite, Smithereens! Such a shame that even though I still have the system I'm pretty sure at least one of the joysticks is busted.
