Judging by the metal mesh behind the halo I would guess the shrink's halo is a lighting device. Outdoor lighting occasionally looks like that

Coming in a bit late to add that the ring style light is often used to put light on patients in medical environments for examination, judging by the position of the red module that I assume acts as the machine's eye it'd make sense to be used with/instead of the screen backlight to help it see in front of itself.

On the topic if the Angel's face Looking like a Mudokon's Ghost, it could be that the Vykkers managed to actually figure out what a Spectral Mudokon looks like by interrogating Mudokons who had actually encountered Ghosts, Or simply interrogating them on their faith and myths.

Yeah, they're a great design and would be so threatening!

Personally, my theory (As to why the Shrinks/Guardian Angels were left on the cutting room floor) is that, at some point, you were meant to go up against a Shrink, in a sort of boss battle (Possibly to free the Mudokon queen). This would be a _very_ unique encounter, since the closest thing Abe's Oddyssey had to a final boss was when Abe went all Super Saiyan against the Rupture Farms executives. But at some point, this fight (along with the Shrink himself) was cut from the game, and the Oddworld Inhabitants might've been reluctant to promote their new IP with a character who doesn't even appear in-game. I'm probably just talking outta my ass, but it's the scenario that always made the most sense to me. From a development standpoint, at least :P

I know its probably more of a coincidence but these guys remind me so much of the Think Tank in big MT from Fallout New Vegas Waiting for one to call me a "L O B O T O M I T E"

Honestly I won't be surprised if we see The Shrinks pop up later on in the next Oddworld game as likely either an enemy type or some form of boss considering the next game appears to focus on the idea of freeing The Mudokon Queen- or at least meeting her to question about how The Mudokon's were tricked into becoming slaves and why she stitched up Abe's lips. It would also be funny to see a Shrink discussing the psychological impact of the Slig Rebellion with a Gluckon like some kind of twisted Dr. Phil or something. Switching the screen with each subject and changing its' voice to try and calm down the steady growing horde of disgruntled audience members. Also, the one "Good" Shrink could be because the AI has actually done its' job for once and formed an empathic connection with a patient- gaining what the Vykers' lack in their twisted medical and technological terrors: empathy for the pain they cause. Perhaps what the Vykers believe is a glitch in their code is actually their program doing what it is supposed to do for once and actually act like a valid psychologist and only friend to The Mudokon Queen.

Very good theories! I love that idea of the Dr. Phil-type Shrink, that would be really great to have in the game I think. It would create some really fun cutscenes in the game. I certainly hope they get more of a role, at least, in the next one.

I was thinking the same thing. Considering most of the workers are trapped inside they probably never see the sun, so getting a little bit of simulated sunlight could make them feel better like it does for SAD.

i think that the lower voice sounds a lot like the glukkons' voice showing who's side they are really on.

My brother has the version with the Guardian Angel cutscene. Didn't know it was rare.

I think the shrink was gonna hurt Abe in the bad ending not mullock….the shrink would’ve been terrifying😳. Pup you did amazing with this series I always come back to these videos because these games were a huge part of my childhood

On ps5(probably ps4 as well) the ps1 emulated version gives you text that says glukkons ehrm lawyers wont let them show what they want when you rescue all mudokons but the cutscene viewer has guardian angel in it and can be viewed. And its the og edition if you want to be free

Kinda sounds like a glukon using a voice changer with the deep parts being the voice changer failing

holy shit can you imagine how good the games would have been if we got ANY of this?

I never realized until now during the guardian angel cut scene Abe does not have the scars on his hands i guess it was just an oversight but i was like "Huh neat"

I had no idea this cutscene was in the game, never unlocked it. Popped in my ol' cd and a cheat code later there it was, how awesome!

the shrinks advertisement did air in Netherland! i was hyped for the game!

You were right in the end, "wanna be free" is better. Neither you nor Abe needs to be *told* what kind of situation this is.

one theory we can make about Shrink is that the shrink that comes to Abe in a dream is a spirit sent by the Soulstorm shaman or the big face ... I believe he is the soulstorm shaman (since he has the power to predict the catastrophes as happens in the first soulstorm cutscenes), he sensed that the glukkons would kill the mudokons to make the mudokon pops and he went to Abe in the form of Shrink in a dream, tells him to look inside and be brave just as the shaman says to Abe to "remove the scars of oppression!" encourages him. could also be The Three Weirdos given the resemblance to the mudokon in the shrink screen, (yes, I know that after Soulstorm's release, exoddus is no longer canon, but that doesn't mean weirdos don't exist, and ... yes could make many theories about this too). I don't know if these theories are credible, probably that video of Abe who sees the shrink while he sleeps is just a video to advertise the game, but still these theories can find a canonical reason. It is interesting how the wikkers have put the face similar to that of a mudokon inside the shrink, maybe Sam, seeing the face of his children feels happier! (also because wikkers invented shrinks to reassure Sam and make her produce more mudokon eggs). it's also cool that there is a little halo above the shrinks, perhaps to give them the angelic look. Anyway, your videos are great! 😇

I went into this video really not getting how you could get 15 minutes out of this little oddity. You have impressed and delighted me with information I had no idea of as well as some fun speculation ideas. Great video!

ha watched this cutscene just a month before soulstorm came out when i did a run of both old abe games, glad i kept the ps1 games

I just discovered your channel and really enjoy your style of analysis. These are the same things I kept thinking about when playing the oddworld games.

When I watched this, this made me flood with ideas on how the Shrink will be depicted, like with Fangus Klot on your UNRELEASED GAMES video; I would also bring out some ideas on how the Shrink would be presented as, this idea also has the inclusion of Squeek as well, the idea is that Squeek was at a junkyard, looking for parts until he found a Shrink left abandoned, misfunctioned, and broken, so he takes the Shrink robot and rebuilt and reprogrammed it, and instead of a Mudokon face; the screen of the Shrink is a cartoon bunny rabbit or a symbol of a rabbit in general, and also instead of a psychiatrist; it was a medical bot that can sew up and bandage injuries and wounds, and it can also play some old-timey music while Squeek is working on a gadget, but overall; this gave me some cool ideas on how the Shrink would work, not just in the Cartel's world but also Squeek and Fangus's world too. (Anyways, cool video.)

Taking a look at the Shrink vs the security orbs, all the extra stuff they installed on and in the shrink, it might not have the space for the tech required for it to be able to move unaided, or the weight of everything might overload the orb making it either unable to rise above necessary altitude for effective movement or unmaneuverable enough to make it worthwhile.

Man really made a 15 minute video out of only one multi-version of video and promotional art, gosh.

Think I've commented this before but I love your channel because you don't sound like you're reading off a wiki article, you summarise the creature/creation and then add your own conjecture and theories to the mix. You've also got a curious and slightly macabre tone of voice. There's a channel very much like yours that, while obviously loving what he does and putting equal effort into his editing, doesn't put out nearly as entertaining vids. Feel mean saying that, but it's my honest opinion! 😅

I've been watching Harry Potter lore videos lately and had the exact same thought, I read about the topics while watching the videos and notice that they're literally just reading off the wiki articles word-for-word. It surprised me quite a bit as it never occurred to me that a lot of big channels like this essentially skip the writing/scripting of videos, which I consider to be the hardest or most time consuming part of making videos, and just read exactly what, presumably, someone else wrote. Though maybe it's unfair for me to criticise that, I'm not sure, it just surprised me I guess. I'm very glad you find my videos entertaining, thank you! :)

I actually wonder if Vykers didn't put Mudokon brains inside of those things, so they could be intelligent AND empathetic towards Queen Sam. It would explain why such shoddy robots would have sophisticated "AI". And if they were Mudokons, they could be easily forced into serving their mother.

I think part of what makes the Shrink look "wrong" is... well, the Mudokan face displayed looks like its skin is stretched across the screen.

the shinks have a three finger hand layout similar to the three finger layout to the unused modokin models.

i could have sworn i have seen that scene before on the pc verison.

What if the Shrink(s) look like a Ghost, because the literally put it in the machine? What if the ghosts seen by abe/slaves in the mines and stuff.. Were, in fact, shrinks that drugged them before appearing?

My disk only played the audio and not the video when i tried to play it in game So as a kid, when i heard that voice and had no idea what was happening, was just so creepy

I recently decided to go back through Soulstorm on the PS5. It's been too long to make an accurate comparison, but I didn't personally find the police lights hard in the eye.

Ya know it's often said in these videos how unfortunate it is that one thing or another hasn't appeared, but I must disagree. It's something marvelous to me that a world can contain so many people, creations, and elements so deeply rooted and genuinely present in the reality that makes up the world without even seeing them in world. It makes the world so big and real, just like our own. There's so much that even directly dictates the course of our daily lives and yet the world is too vast and complex to experience it completely and as such few are even conchous of the existence of their presence or control.

spoilers for oddworld soulstorm: at the end of the game, abe, toby and alf are discussing what abe found out during the events of the game, and abe says "we all have the same mother" and says they need to go to the glukkon capital to find her so if a sequel to soulstorm does get made, that will likely be the plot, and as such the shrink will very likely make a return

Honestly, that commercial is a terrible advertisement. Imagine you've never heard of Oddworld and know nothing about it. Now watch that commercial - just once and without pausing or rewinding, as if it were airing on TV. Now: What's Oddworld? It mentions 'gaming' at the end, so we can assume it's a video game, but what kind of video game? What's it about? What kind of quality should you expect? Who's Abe and why should you spend your hard-earned money on him?
