Half-Life: OVERWORLD
Ойындар
Welcome to the Universal Union!
Until Valve reveals their next Half Life game, I tried to imagine what a trailer for a sequel to Half Life 2 Episode 2 would look like... Welcome to the Combine Overworld, and their next attempt to regain control of Earth.
Almost every visual asset in this short film (concepts, models, textures, rigs, animations) have been designed and handcrafted from scratch. Exceptions: (G-man, and Dr. Breen's Face)
No generative Ai assets have been used in this project, even for the concept stage... if that even matters to anyone.
I wanted to thank the Half Life subreddit for all their support and and even suggestions during the design process and a friend who helped with retopology of the bear and the "mother" creature.
Inspiration/references:
Half Life 2 Artbook "Raising The Bar" has been used as initial inspiration for the many original concepts I had to create but at the same time, other media has influenced the design process in many areas. "Alien", "Prometheus" "Scorn - game" and Denis Villeneuve sci-fi movies are some of the them.

not sure if was intentional, but I love how you made it feel like how all the synths were just 'part' of the overworld, like cells in a unimaginably massive body, fitting with the combines use of medical jargon when dealing with humanity. That's definitely my interpretation, too. I like to imagine that there is no 'top' to the combine, no actual leaders or species that's at the helm. The Combine is probably just a giant, impossibly vast AI; a blind idiot god that expands and consumes simply for the sake of it.

Damn man, this has it all, the complete 'other-worldness' and true might of the Combine, G-man cameo, the Aperture logo on Gordon's gun, bloody amazing. Not to mention praise from the messiah himself; TheParryGod!
was really skeptical about this video because fan projects that usually try to capture the deeper and more alien aspects of the combine miss the mark or make them too familiar. but this was absolutely amazing. practically perfectly captures the disturbing, unimaginably massive, alien aspects of what make the combine so interesting. great work!
MAN! This captures the essence of Half-Life 2 and draws up on it in such a perfect way! Incredible new creature designs, showing how truly alien the Combine are, and that even with their humanity removed, the soldiers we fight in HL2 are the most human part of the Combine we could ever see, and that the desolate streets of City 17 are the most cozy and familiar place humanity can inhabit; the sense of scale, in which even the enormous Citadel dwarfs in comparison, showing how the force we fought was merely a policing garrison. And the last scene showing Gordon's POV making us imagine what Half-Life 3 could have been... Also, this feels a lot like the alien homeworld scene in Pacific Rim (In a good way!)

I loved that scene in Pacific Rim! It really concluded for the imagination of the viewers thoughts about what or who was sending the Kaiju from the other side 👍 it was amazing for cinema because it fits pretty well for the ending of that movie! it’s done even better here for half life to reiterate the combine threat using its unknown technology to open gateways across the multiverse 😮 this scene also shows the audience how hidden humanity was to this sinister empire had it not been conducting experiments in territories of science not understood! Tie this combine over world scene back to half life Ch1 and it’s the perfect title choice unforeseen consequences! This strikes so many cords for my sci fi itch because I’m starting to see the subject of not what if in this universe but what if in the multi universe has become a serious topic since in actual scientific theory it’s become pretty obvious the multiverse is real!

Good GOD, this is an absolutely stunning depiction of the Combine Overworld. By far the definitive one in my opinion. Every part of this is perfect from start to finish, showing how completely different The Combine is in a way that is impossible to fully describe. The choice to make Breen a malnourished corpse on life support as opposed to a host body is a little odd but it can be excused, because it’s a brilliant visual and only one part of this masterpiece. The part at the end with Gordon is also underrated. Helping to demonstrate how vast the environment is from a first person POV AND setting him up with a weapon CONSIDERABLY more powerful than his usual fare. Like the entire power ceiling just got boosted by a hundred and now he’s going to be fighting what would’ve normally been considered bosses as regular enemies. GOD I’d love a game set on the Overworld now.

@@dr.cheeze5382 Why do you guys keep saying Breen is an advisor? He never got his host body, he never crossed the portal. When Gordon destroyed the portal generator, the sphere Breen was in fell, and then the reactor exploded, turning Breen and everything else into dust. He's Dead. Plus, that advisor is not toying with the environment, since it was forced out of its life support, it couldn't see properly, so it had to touch things with its tongue to find out what they are.
WOW!!!! The level of creativity going on here! Incredible all around!
Ok brother, you caught me out there; I was ready to pre-order, lol. I'd imagine The Combine homeworld to look something like this, with their life-forms and tech even more unimaginable and terrifying than what was already witnessed on earth.

Absolutely greatest unofficial video-art on Half-Life that I've ever seen!
The continuous camera shot is incredible!
Valve should hire you as a designer.

Wow! This is next level Half Life for sure! I had to watch it multiple times in a row just for all the details and immersion. And a hearty 'Thank You' for not using AI in my humble opinion. This is well designed and illustrated. It's the Half Life successor we all deserve. Amazing job!
That... was.. amazing... Makes me think of Breen's words. "Really, well, let's see how well it serves you.. on the far side of a combine portal."
Giving Breen the HL2 early Consul's worm form is a nice touch
I absolutely LOVE the Striders (?) crawling around the portal gate at 1:10. It really evokes that sense of unease and disgust that we get when looking at a cluster of wooded stick-insects and the seemingly unnatural way that they move and behave. They're like bacteria infecting an open wound.

Holy shizen! Fine work sir. Things sure have come a long way since I first put on the hazmat suit for a reactor maintainence test 😂
To think this is but a fraction of the Combine Empire's actual strength... I also love the design of the extended Synth Forces such as those Striders and Dropships, really sells their aesthetic.

Actually, it's like a grain of sand on a beach, considering that the alliance knows how to create Dyson spheres and conquer worlds. For them, Gordon Freeman is like an ant that managed to survive the flooding of an anthill
Perfection. You've managed to capture the inhuman, biomechanical, almost insectoid nature of the combine down to a tea. I really didn't think anyone could do the combine homeworld justice, I stand corrected. You sir are an inspiration!
Oh wow man, this is probably the best depiction of the overworld I’ve ever seen. If it had a canon look this would be it
Amazing job! This was stunning!
The most important thing about this imaginative sequel is the absence of a "3" in the title - so it might just happen. Good job!

Gordon going into the Combine Homeworld to close off the portal from inside after the Combine’s discovery of Borealis.
Alien train track right from another world was a goo idea. Practical, efficient...
The amount of talent this man has to make a cinematic masterpiece like this in 5 MONTHS! Wow, Your good.
I can see a mix of HR Giger and War of the Worlds aesthetics here. Gabe would be proud.
Your portrayal of the overworld is honestly the best I’ve seen. From the mix of machine and synths, to the different types of striders that carry different purposes. To it feeling like the inside of an organic system and it feeling both futuristic and nightmarish at the same time. It’s just *chefs kiss*
Dude, this was some insaaaanely visually satisfying footage. Bravo!
The music and his speech gets to me. Very well done!
The models look so good and you even redid the gravity gun from scratch and made me realize it was the weapon in just a few seconds? Really well done needs more attention in my opinion.
Bruh, this is EXACTLY how I imagined the Combine Overworld to be! I really love all the unique synth designs, and the sheer magnitude of everything presented. Also, in this interpretation, is the Overworld just a local command center/nexus or the real “capital” of the Combine?

By the way, why does Dr. Breens host body still have his original body latched on to it? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to just completely transfer Breens consciousness into the host body?
@UnknownDino
Ай бұрын
The consciousness copies of Breen were "incomplete" and "disfunctional" to say the least (based on Mark Laidlaw writings on breengrub). This here was the latest version, the actual body parts of Breen that made it on the other side of the portal in the end of HL2. So the combine kept alive the only version of Breen that did not betray them, the original one.

I think this might be intended to be one of many consecutive sections, and whenever there is an invasion they connect the power plugs to turn the portals on and direct all the troops to them.
I initially thought this was a game trailer and I was SO EXCITED. Then, realization - I was gutted. Then, amazement at the project. You do fine work.
Just coming back on here to watch this again and tell you how much it kicks ass.
