Oculus Rift vs. HTC Vive comparison

Ғылым және технология

If you want the most sophisticated VR headset on the market, you’ve got two choices: the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. They’re a lot more similar than they might appear at first glance, but their are some very real practical and philosophical differences. The Verge’s Adi Robertson breaks them down.

    +Tobias Nilsson I'd wager it's a bit harder than that. It's not a "fill in the blanks" thing as much as it is an actual "back and forth" kind of thing. My guess is she practices the dialogue with someone else while timing the dialogue, then they use signals coupled with the timed responses from the practice to let her know when to start talking during the recording. I also think she speeds up or slows down the recordings; if you look at 0:27, the Vive girl looks unnatural after putting the Vive back on the table, like she was sped up. That might just be me imagining things, though =P

    Tracking via lasers will always be better/faster, because camera image analysis will always be slower. A simple technical limitation. Camera hardware may be cheaper though (but then require more CPU calculation power).

  • @Kissaki0

    @Kissaki0

    8 жыл бұрын

    Neddskorg I don't know if it will be night and day better (if you're not close to the minimum hardware requirements). But it will very probably be a considerable, measurable difference. The base stations emit lasers, which the headset and controllers notice and interpret. Data is then sent to the PC via cable (headset) and wirelessly (controllers). So it is laser-based tracking. This is the quickest way of tracking, at least if you don't want cables on your controllers. Now I don't know how the Occulus camera stuff supposedly works, but even if it did all the other stuff the same, and replaced laser spotting (basically a on/off check on the sensor) with camera image analysis, it can technologically only be slower. Whether this will be unplayable, noticeable, or only a problem on PCs close to minimum spec, if at all, we will have to wait and see.

    The Rift is only a seated/stationary experience, for the first 6 months or so. After that, the Oculus Touch controllers will come out, and the Rift will officially start focusing on room-scale games. The Rift's tracking system is capable of about a 14ft x 13ft tracking space, with just 1 camera in a corner high up. 2 cameras, each on opposite sides of the tracking space, allows for better 360 room-scale tracking, and should keep occlusion problems with the Touch controllers to a minimum. Developers are reporting that the Oculus + Touch works every bit as well as the Vive does. Oculus Rift owners may have to wait a little longer for hand-motion-controllers.. But there are some *big* key differences, with the Touch vs the Vive controllers, that should be considered if you're thinking about the better long-term VR system.. Differences which will allow for certain games to have better controls while using Touch.. And some of these experiences simply wont be possible on the Vive's controllers, until they come out with new hardware to match Touch. These might seem like small differences on paper, but they're big in VR. Basically, the Touch controllers are smaller/lighter and more ergonomic to hold, they sit in your hand's resting pose pretty well. The buttons are also designed to mimic actual hand-interactions, and the focus of the controller itself is to simulate your hands into VR.. This differs from the Vive, because it's controllers focus more on simulating a tool that you use to interact with things in VR. The Touch controllers are capable of being used as tools, but they'll focus more on hand-presence, more than Vive ever could.. And that will be huge for enhancing the VR experience. Also, the Touch controllers focus on sensing what your fingers are doing, to detect gestures for controls and interactions. Social/multiplayer VR has way more potential with Touch, IMO. Also, IMO, for the long-term success of consumer VR, the differences between the Rift and Vive aren't big enough to really matter.. But comfort will be king! ;p And price matters a lot, and the ability to start cheaper, and add-on later, is nice.

    I agree with most in your comment, but your forgot the tracking methods are different, the Vive use laser sensor an put out raw data that no need post-process, the Oculus use an infrared camera and need post-process, what it means the Vive has a lower latency on tracking. Other detail is that the Vive maps all the room and can show the physical boundaries inside the VR experience, most games right now can track you ducking or jumping. Right now the Vive is the absolute winner, if you are a hardcore gamer the Vive is backed by Steam with its large collection of games and a potencial explosive grown on VR games. Well, Oculus is backed by Facebook and there is nothing good I can say about it.

  • @NikoKun

    @NikoKun

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Ruy Daza Quiroga Yes, the tracking methods are different, tho I wouldn't say that difference matters all that much, they both have the same level of accuracy, and the post-process needed for the IR cam is negligible, and doesn't impact things. I'd even argue that Oculus is preparing for the future of computer-vision, mobile VR tracking, by keeping camera-based tracking in the game, and putting R&D effort into it. There is also NO significant difference in latency between the 2 tracking methods, they're both below the threshold for that mattering. The Vive's chaperone system can also be done on the Rift, in software. It's not difficult, the SteamVR chaperone already works on the Rift. Once Touch comes out, Oculus will create it's own chaperone system, and there are also tricks they might be able to do with the IR cameras, to enhance chaperone. This feature isn't an advantage for the Vive, it's just a room-scale feature, and the Rift will have something similar. I don't really care which system Valve is backing, nor do I care about facebook's involvement. In a year from now, I'd bet that almost all games on the Rift and Vive will work on both systems, for the most part.

  • @DrNPCabd

    ***** For early adopters with gaming in mind the choice is clear, the HTC Vive is here and by now is the best VR experience, involving your hands in the experience, unlike the Oculus with its Xbox gamepad, yuk!!! It's okay, hopefully Google will launch something with VR (everything but cardboards, please) and even the odds, the market needs more competitors to grow, the only winners would be the users. Cheers.

    We tried both. The vive is better hands down! One of the main things VR should accomplish is immersion and the Vive does this to a much higher degree. Other than the price difference, the vive is better in every way!

    In short. If your planing to get a VR headset wait a year and keep doing research.

    +Blakefe Or, if you happen to have one of the phones compatible with the Samsung Gear VR, get one as it's cheap enough to show you how it works, let you try out some games, watch 3D videos, etc, while you do your research. This way you'll have more experience than just trying out the headsets for a few demos and not really getting a feel of the experience. I feel the experience I am gaining now with the Gear VR will help me make a better decision in a year or so. I think a very smart move, would be for Nintendo to price their NX system lower than either the PS4.5 or the Xbone.5; and to come out with their own VR headset that is also cheaper than both company's. If they did this, it would be the Wii all over again, only better as the NX is supposed to be a powerful machine.

    Okay so, I'm considering getting an oculus rift. I would like to get a Vive instead but it's a lot more expensive and I don't need the best VR that there is. I just want one in general. I have two friends who are huge VR fanboys (specifically Vive fanboys) and they completely trash rift whenever I bring it up. Is the rift really that bad? I knows it's no Vive, but considering I have a smaller room, want to spend less money, and just want a VR to be inside the game, rather than walk around it, is the rift a good option for me? Are there any problems with the rift? My Vive fanboy friends read some terrible rift reviews to me and it kind of worries me. Someone just give me reassurance please. Thank you :)

    +halloween socks Lets see, the headset is almost identical. The Vive just has a camera if you have a big enough room to run around in. However, the Rift is significantly lighter than the Vive, and comfortable for over 5 hours (from what I've heard). The Vive hurts on your head and feels slightly front heavy. Then theres the camera tracking. The Rift is plug and play, while the Vive takes about half an hour to connect and set up. You also need to nail it to your ceiling. The Vive has motion controllers, allowing more immersion, but the Rift is getting them later in the year. Then theres games. Most games on the Vive feel amazing, but theres no real "story" or emotion. The Rift focuses on story and fun feel to their games. Although thats your preference. Finally, theres the fans. Rift fans usually have done their research since most of them used to be supporters of the DK1. They are more open minded and see the benefits of both headsets. Then theres Vive fans, who are mostly recent fans of VR because they saw it on the Steam front page, and trash every single thing the Rift has to offer. "Wow, the Rift has a weird pirate shooting game, SUCKS!" "Um, the Vive has a cowboy shooting game..." "Well its obviously better cuz its the Vive". Have fun with your decision, but I mainly stayed away from the Vive because of its toxic fanbase.

    ***** Thank you for the help! I probably will be getting the Rift because its more comfortable, cheaper, and basically will be the same as the vive when the controllers come out. But for now, it suits my budget. I would feel too mad at myself if i spent almost $900 dollars on the vive but the rift makes my wallet feel a bit better lol. Thank for the tips though.
