Oculus Quest 2 Teardown: Into The Metaverse
Ғылым және технология
In this video we head into the metaverse (sort of) to see how the Facebook/Oculus/Meta Quest 2 VR headset works, from the inside out. It may be a couple years old, but it is still the most popular cordless VR headset on the market, and we need all the practice we can get for the upcoming VR boom.
Devin Coldewey's conversation with Facebook's CTO: techcrunch.com/2019/08/22/how...
Huge thank you to sctanf's iFixit guide on this headset, which helped us break into this thing without, well … breaking it. www.ifixit.com/Guide/Oculus+Q...

That's pretty crazy. I hate to say it, but even though Facebook/Meta is taking over the industry (Unfortunately), their acquisition of Oculus has improved the overall VR experience so far. My Quest 2 has taken some pretty serious accidental beatings, so serious respect for the Oculus design team!

@@dbchees3 I had a Rift S and as soon as I had tried my Quest 2 for the first time, I put the Rift S on eBay. The Quest is better in every way except the shape of the controllers. The ring is perfect on the Rift because it goes around your hand, it's perfectly natural. For the Quest they had to put it on the wrong side of the controller and I hate that.

It should be really high score IMO. Everything is replacable, nothing is glued in (except with strips of course). Sure it is not so easy to tear down, but that is always the case with electronics, that are so densely packed with hardware.

Maybe no rating because there’s so little to compare against, it’s sort of a one of a kind piece of hardware right now in the west as opposed to the thousands of different laptops on the market

Well they should gives the lens shutter like in camera or at least a lens cover with the package. The absent of these is mindblowing for this kind of device when it cost only 3 dollar or less foe the cover and shutter to protect lense is freaking old tech.

pls show how to do that with the controllers. I would love to see the inside of those
Holy cow, all of that crammed into such a small device that can run VR Fairly well is crazy. Just think, about 6 years ago Oculus released basically their first headset.
Omg finally I haven't see any good disassembly of the quest 2 till now. Thank you
I was waiting for this! Thanks
This is my DREAM console so thanks for showing me inside one! 👍
It's a small wonder in itself that it doesn't overheat constantly with how densely packed everything is, and how tiny that cooling system is. And yet, the only time I've ever heard of one of these overheating is if someone stuck a case on it that obstructed the air vents. (Basically that entire 1mm gap where the front plate meets the rest of the assembly.) As much as I hate Zucc for his dystopian actions on the macro scale, I have nothing but mad respect for the engineers at Oculus who managed to make this little thing possible.
Wow. Amazing job. Thank you for all your work.
Thank you! I've always wanted to see what's going on in these things!
Great breakdown, after 2100 hours in this headset (95% with PCVR) with no issues it is insane what they did. I use a battery pack and cable and get 13-14 hours out of it too.

You made it look so easy to to take the plastic off after the 4 screws
This is a work of art
Now that you have the battery out, you might as well keep it in separate enclosure and put it in the head-strap behind head as counterweight.
Good vid. Now I can dust clean mine and change the thermal paste.
They should put the battery on the head strap so it’s on the back of your head. Then it’s easy to swap out and would help balance the weight of the thing.

@evolicious
2 жыл бұрын
@@REDxFROG High DPI would mean no SDE (screen door effect). It really depends on PPI, lens tech, display tech, and more. Varjo Aero is a commercial device that isn't viable for consumers or any mainstream VR software (despite it's OpenXR/VR compatibility). Like most commercial VR systems, you need a team of engineers to support the software you plan to use with it. Otherwise, it's a $3,200-$5,500 (plus an $800-$1,500 annual fee) paper weight.

Great video; while this IS your forte, I haven’t seen the inside of my quest 2 yet. Thanks.
I wonder if you could mount some cylinder battery holders on top and use one or two 18650’s. Maybe someone could manufacture a cable that could be routed out the case.
Man, I wish they did clear cases, would totally replace it my self if they were available
Am I the only one who loves seeing the guts of the tech? I wish I could buy a polycarbonate replacement faceplate.
Now I just need to figure out the logistics of balancing a better battery with power draw so the thing won't die even when it's plugged in through link.
It's not mentioned in the video but I'm just going to suggest that the aftermarket Elite Head Strap (with a battery) is worth a teardown video, it would make a lot more sense to get the upgraded strap and replace the battery inside it than to ever open this thing just to replace the battery in the HMD.
Great video. Can you do another one on official head strap repair. They break like candy.
Really interesting teardown, thank you! I repair pcs, phones etc, and I can see VR headsets becoming routine for me at some point.
Finnally ifixit did it👍
I wonder if it'd be possible to replace the IPD adjustment system with a different one that gave finer control like the original Quest.
To think this might all be condensed into basically sunglasses in the near future 🧠💥
if you want a more proper answer on how they track using cameras, AFAIK it's just by recognizing common objects and land marks in the area you're in, then they measure their size, check how much it gets smaller and bigger and how it rotates to track the headset. if it gets bigger you're moving forward! and you can see the object on the left of the headset move back, so that's how they can know, and they probably combine it with the accelerometer data to get better accuracy.
@lorow2542
2 жыл бұрын
It's called SLAM tracking, and basically works the way you described
You can gently slide the lense until it’s in between the settings
Only reason why I’m watching this so I can spray paint the shell
I hope someone makes replacement lenses for it or even upgrades. As far as I know there are only add-ons and not replacements . Hopefully that will change in the future
wow look what a lot of materials and work, ha
Nice!
Seeing this would make the Arpara AIO all the more impressive, since it's made by a small company so being able to cram that much tech into an even smaller and lighter overal package is just that. Of course it could still be bad, but chances are it's as good as the Quest 2 in most aspects (and far better in terms of resolution, image quality, clarity and dark performance since micro oled). The Kickstarter ends in a few days and they should be in the hands of backers before the end of next month (and in hands of reviewers some time between now and then).
1:10 You skipped taking off the ribbon cable.... thats literally the only reason i clicked on this video 😢
Waiting for Quest 3 tear down on 10/10. Thanks first!
Had plenty of hard knocks since I got mine, both the headset and the controller. Still running strong. Then again Thrill threw his in a dryer for an hour and it was fine.
Have you ever saw a display have Amy thing distorting the view? Like on the right side I see a squiggly green line . It always show like it's something in the lens making the display distorted. When I move my head it moves also.

i think the best mod for the quest 2 would be a replacement headstrap that gives it the ability to get the lenses right up to your eyes like the valve index. i get a far higher fov with the quest when i take the face foam off. but then its not comfortable. replacing the entire quest 2 shell wil a minimal shell that sits inside a headset frame with a adjustment dial like the index would be really cool.
Dope asf
I can tell you exactly why that screen is attached with stretch release adhesive: Sunlight. You *can* play outdoors in VR, but if the sun goes into those eyepeices and through the lens, it *will* cook the screen. This happened often enough on the older headsets (of all makes, not just Oculus/Meta/whatever they're called next well) that it made sense to decrease the price of the repair on the manufacturer end, because the customer will pay out the nose for it regardless, bigger profits on the service.
@DFX2KX

What *I'd* like to see is a teardown of the touch controllers, because that's the part that's going to get broken more often (yours truly has a minor crack in the tracking ring. Doorframe 1, Quest 0, oof)
2:28 that $300 price tag really aged well, the increase by 100 could've been put towards the ipd slider
I always get dizzy with VR sets… but that’s because I wear glasses normally and it just isn’t always comfortable to deal with.
One thing worth mentioning regarding the battery, is that the elite strap with battery is a way better strap, and just replacing the elite strap would cost less than replacing the whole device.
@ge2719

someone should test if the device can work with an external battery when the internal one has failed. it might not function with a dead battery
Awesome
Is there a way to mod the Quest to bypass the battery and feed it directly with the power needed for PC gaming and applications? When I set my Q2 to max resolution and framerate etc, it drains the battery quickly. I understand this is because you can only charge the battery with external cable which is limited to protect the health of the battery? Need more power! Good to see a teardown and see that it can be repaired, even if its complicated.
I really wish the battery was on the head strap to save weight in the unit.
