Well, if you watch the ending credits, in most movies, you'll see why. In their thank yous, they give a shout out to cities, states, provinces, countries, etc., which allowed them to film there. In most said movies, the locals supply extras, give permission to allow filming at certain locations (even if it means shutting down streets in certain towns for the day), etc. There is SO MUCH that goes into creating any film, but especially major motion pictures. These are things the average person does not even realize. Watch the whole credits, and/or the extra features provided on a DVD of any movie/documentary to understand and get a better idea.

I think they gave this to her though as a substitute because they wouldn't give it to viola despite the fact that viola was clearly the best actress in her category that year. This diverted all the attention off the fact that a black non-super model type was denied winning a leading role Oscar again. The academy seem to be quite happy to give black actresses the best supporting award (especially when they're fat and funny) but less so the best actress in a leading role unless you're in your twenties and light skinned and pretty.

I LOVE Octavia Spencer. She's fantastic! But Melissa McCarthy is really what just amazes me. She did an interview with Ellen and talked about getting nominated for this award. And she said she was excited, as anyone would be. But she was more excited about Octavia being nominated because they're best friends. And the look on her face when Octavia won is just amazing. You can tell she is extremely proud of her friend.

@@itsupsettingmeandmyhomegir406 The Color Purple was nominated for 11 oscars and won none of them. It's tied with 1977's The Turning Point for most nominations with no win. That The Color Purple is also one of few films to focus on the stories of african-american women and then to be so extremely not-honored, not that I can speak for others, but I assume must sting deeply for an audience that so rarely sees itself as the center of film narratives.

I am a white woman “of a certain age.” I was raised to treat everyone the same. I read the book long before i saw the movie. A older African-american woman knew i was reading the book, sometimes asked me how i liked it. I said, “i said it’s very much in the bigoted mindset of the 1960’s south, and it’s making me angry. As a more “modern” white woman raised in the north, i have to keep reminding myself of that.”

+Marco Paiva im neither black or white, but i respectfully disagree with your comment. there is a huge list of black actors who've won oscars. I think the reason Jessica gets more roles is because shes a younger actor therefore she has more opportunities, where is octavia is of an older age and has limited roles. We've seen older white actors talking about this issue too. so i don't think its a race thing here.
