Ocean Wave String Art with a CNC Twist

String art always seemed like something that could benefit from some CNC love, but I needed the right opportunity and motivation to bring this idea to life.

If there is someone in your life you don't want to talk to anymore but you're too non confrontational to say anything, just give them a complex string art kit as a gift. They will be really appreciative, until they actually do it and then understand that you hate them.

just when i've almost forgotten about you, you go and do something like this... and totally redeem yourself!

It looks like it was simple to make once it’s all done, but there is so much that goes into it. It turned out great btw!

Dude genuinely, you're 100% correct about Inkscape. I really love and prefer open source software, and I tried to use Inkscape for years. But it's so arcane and painful to use! It made me not do projects like this because I hate using the tool. I recently found out that I have access to the whole Adobe suite through work, so as much as I hate getting locked into a software ecosystem, I caved and tried Illustrator. It took me 10 minutes with no tutorials or help to achieve something I had tried to do in Inkscape for multiple hours. I've had a similar experience with GIMP and Photoshop now too

It would be interesting to rig up some kind of tool to put in the spindle that could hold the string. Then with a bit of fusion magic of should be possible to to auto generate the toolpaths to wrap each string around the nails

Haha, I agree that would be awesome, and that's why I said this was string art with a CNC twist, and not "CNC String Art". Because someone definitely would have been disappointed I didn't do that. The tricky bit would be having the software decide to how offset inside/outside each nail. You also need a tool that won't catch on other strings. ex. I can't just stick an embroidery needle in the spindle and run that between nails. Ideally, you'd also pair it with a 4th axis, so this tool would be able to pivot and feed smoothly regardless of direction. But it would be a super cool project if someone could figure this all out...

Really clever Engineering Art. Next upgrade would have been giving 3D depth to the waves & mountains by drilling to different depths & nails in hex pattern. Every nail string connected to each neighbouring nail of same colour. (Spiders web effect)

The thought did cross my mind. Other option would be to get longer/shorter nails. Really just depends on if you want to put in a little extra work at the computer in CAD or at the workbench. But that was just a little too much complexity for me on my first attempt, maybe next time...

I would use Rhino with Grasshopper to create the pattern for the holes. Unlimited parametric control over the spacing and much more.

This was cool. Now do a plexiglass version to see what kind of effect you get from seeing both sides of the string art.

I've been wanting to do this and have a spool on the cnc and have it make the string art from board to finished product
