Obstructive Sleep Apnea & Gastroesophageal Reflux in Veterans Disability | All You Need To Know

In this video Leah explores the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in the context of veterans seeking disability compensation. Leah notes that while OSA is often linked to obesity, there is growing evidence of a connection to GERD. She emphasizes the importance of considering all risk factors, both positive and negative, when evaluating a veteran's condition. Leah references various studies and articles that provide evidence of a link between OSA and GERD, highlighting how GERD might contribute to the development or severity of OSA. Throughout the video, she stresses the importance of having an objective, comprehensive medical opinion and encourages viewers to discuss these findings with their doctors to better understand the potential overlap between these conditions in their disability claims.

Thank-you for this timely subject. Within the last year I've been diagnosed by the VA for MDD from tinnitus, OSA , and Gerd with Barrett's Esophagus. I'm planning to put in packages for all three, along with diagnosed lumbar issues. I'm waiting on my files from VetRecs, which were mailed out Dec. 28th. I will be calling you once I get them.

GERD caused OSA for me. The obesity often comes after OSA starts kicking in. It's hard to lose weight if you can't sleep.

I understand that it matters how the disability affects your work. Does your occupation have an effect on the C&P examiner or Raters decision if a disability is service connected? I don’t want the VA blaming my job as a police officer.

It really just depends on the rater and examiners opinions and that is really hard to estimate because there are so many of them with different perspectives. Thank you for watching sir

Hi I recently conducted a sleep study via my private ins. Have been diagnosed with moderate OSA and I have a service connected disability, Tinnitus at 10%. Would it be advisable to pursue a secondary condition of Sleep Apnea due to Tinnitus? Do I need a nexus letter? Should I have the VA do a sleep study as well? Additionally due to my service connected knee condition (20% disability) which has limited my mobility could these also be contributing factors for my sleep apnea (i.e. BMI of over 30)?

Have you seen insomnia as a secondary to a lumbar back, Ibs, and/or mental health service connection condition?

  • @prestigeveteranmedical

Insomnia is generally considered a mental health disability for ratings purposes and is usually combined with this not secondary to it. You may want to follow up with a legal professional to discuss and get further clarification

I may have missed this part but can GERD be claim secondary to sleep apnea. You did mention Sleep apnea secondary to Gerd. I tried to claim Gerd secondary to PTSD but got denied.
