OBS NDI Plugin Setup | Your Phone is a KILLER Webcam!

Scott explains how to set up your phone and OBS Studio to use the NDI plugin. This tutorial will show you how to accomplish three primary tasks with your OBS installation.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
WAIT TILL YOU SEE THESE KILLER FREE ANIMATED SUBSCRIBE BUTTONS
I spent five long days learning how to animate subscribe buttons in Blender.
The animations are KILLER and I made 10 of them for you COMMERCIAL FREE.
Get Them Here ➤ scottfichter.com/free-animate...
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
The first part will show you how to find and install the OBS studio Newtek NDI plugin. All you have to do is go to the Blue OBS website and search for the NDI Plugin. Installation is very straight forward. From a PC user's perspective, always download the exe file. You will also be shown an installation warning you of overwriting files on OBS. Don't worry about the prompt and press forward. Nothing terrible will happen to your streaming software.
The second part of this NDI installation is downloading the phone app for both iPhone and Droid. The Newtek NDICam app is a straightforward installation, and it only costs $10. The software works perfectly. There are some warning flags with Droid, though. People say the software sucks, and so I suggest you install and work with the IP Webcam. The app is 100% free, and everyone in the comments loves the app. You can find the link here.
play.google.com/store/apps/de...
This link below will take you to an OBS studio install video.
• How to Use Phone as IP...
The third and final part of this tutorial explains the settings for NDICam and OBS. Scott explains what the various parameters are on your iPhone and how to create a connection on OBS. For the most part, the setup is very easy.

Setup was easy from the OBS NDI page - thanks for the video that showed the steps (I would have hesitated on the "this folder already exists" warning if you hadn't mentioned in!). I used the free EPOCCam on iOS - gave it a test run and liked it so much I got the paid version for $7.99, which includes green-screen, LED-Light control, several options for bit rate, size, etc. Now I can freely walk around the house (and yard mostly!) and stream/record. Thanks for the video!!

I found this video trying to start a budget stream, and let me tell you, that this video is worth way more than people believe. Not only does the android IP webcam app work in obs it works in the elgato stream software as well. Using the same exact principle. I just did my first 2 hour stream with zero issues besides the cpu being a 4 core and the gpu on the very low end of the spectrum, it was not bad at all! Thanks for this piece of gold!

The one issue i have with using the phone as an IP webcam is the obvious delay and lip sync issue for live usage. I have android and I use droid cam and connect via usb which has no latency what so ever. It is Free. You do have to jump through some hoops with your phone to let the camera pipe out via usb, but if you follow their instructions precisely, it works terrific. my old galaxy s6 is now a permanent webcam. I'd love to see you check that out and see if you like it! Then of course we look forward to another video. Thanks!

Nice Tut. Been using NDI tools for months with Zoom and OBS. Just an FYI: You don't need the OBS plugin. Just run the Free NDI tools and add the device (iPad, iPhone, etc) and add in OBS the Newtek item. Works fine without the OBS add-in. The benefit of the free NDI tools is it works with any other online tool like Zoom directly.

Scott, I don't think you need to turn on the NDI settings in the Tools drop-down. That's only if you want to use that OBS program as a source (output). Just installing the plug-in automatically adds the ability to receive an NDI stream over the network. (Clue: That 'NDI Source' will be in the sources menu as soon as you have the plug-in installed. Remember the 'Restarts' everyone! and yes it must be the same network.) FYI: I also found that using OBS as a source on another PC over a wi-fi network was problematic. Plugged in the ethernet cable, rebooted everything and it worked fine.

Thanks Scott, went like a dream. I've got it running alongside a second iPhone running EpocCam, going to be interesting to do a test stream in the morning and watch for sync. Any ideas as to how to get them to line up?

Many thanks Scott Fichter , I have been used to managing these issues with audio, the trade-off between too much latency at one end of the quality spectrum and complete audio breakdown at the other end. This seems to be the video equivalent insofar as it relates to the quality/speed slider in NDI. What I was referring to, having sorted the aforementioned, was the issue of lining up two video tracks, a bit like you do in a DAW with audio. I imagine that I will be able to keep the audio separate from the video and mix it down to a stereopair from multiple recordings in the usual way with my DAW. To finally get to the point, my concern, and my question, was how do I lineup the video tracks, of which there will be four, in my finished offering. What I have discovered in OBS is that you can apply a video/audio filter to the relevant MEDIA items, that introduces a multi-millisecond delay. Hopefully this will enable me to sync the video tracks; it’s a bit like the lip-sync Delay setting in Advanced Audio Properties in OBS.

Great video Scott! Thank you! Question: Is there a way to include my iphone screen as a scene source? For example, my friend was FaceTiming me from a parade, and I wanted to include that conversation from my phone as part of my live stream. Is this possible?

  • @ScottFichter

    @ScottFichter

Yes, the objective is to get your phone screen to show up on your computer and then you would bring that computer screen into OBS. Take a look at this software www.airsquirrels.com/reflector. You connect your phone with USB and the phone's screen shows up on the computer. Talk to you later.

@@ScottFichter I really like that you're watching and replying this often. It makes watching you even more fun! Quick question ... I saw you tweaking your background colors (living room) in one video. Are you using a green screen or is there a trick to using a photo as a backdrop in OBS that I haven't seen yet? I'm a musician that wants to live stream a concert. My studio is a small bedroom that I will light up. There's no room for a green screen but I'd love to have something "nice" behind me, anything but a door! LOL!!! Maybe you've covered this in a video that I haven't seen? Thanks Scott! :)

For Android I've been using iVCam and like it, you can adjust exposure and white balance and lock them down (which I prefer). I upgraded to pro to remove their logo and I think it was $7. But do you know of a phone app that has more control and features like my built in camera app has....things like stabilization, color saturation, all that kind of stuff??

One thing you must take care about is whether the phone plugin outputs its video in widescreen or in 4x3 aspect ratio. I found a lot of them on the Google Play store that only seem to do 4x3 and that is not acceptable in this day and age.

Honestly man.... some folks are having trouble with it and other get it to work with little to no issue. All I can say is yes, it SHOULD work fine with a iPad. An iPad is a iPhone with a bigger screen. It should work. I can not pin point why this does not work for some folks. It may be an app conflict.
