I remember getting angry seeing a dog go through this before, but then finding out it was because their human developed Alzheimer's, and kept forgetting they already fed the dog. Taught me something about learning the whole story before getting angry at someone I didn't even know.

@Daddy walking can substitute for running well enough they both burn calories walking does is slower but if you take your time with walks its just as good for burning calories as running

@Daddy also exercise alone will never be enough to overcome a bad diet its just not happening if you eat 5000 calories a day and need to burn 2000 there is no way you are doing that at least everyday i had to walk 32 km to burn 2400(nearly) and it took 4,3 hours almost without any rest so even if the dog was walked everyday it wouldn’t have been enough

This inspired me to lose weight myself. After losing 100 pounds, I'm happy to say that I can scratch my ear with my foot now.

Yes, good point. Children AND animals. The homeless. The elderly. The newborn baby in a dumpster. The trash bag of kittens on the side of the road. Any hopeless human being or helpless animal that you come across is an opportunity to save a life and change it for the better. Some find their niche serving hungry folks in a soup line. Others find theirs in fostering abused children. Still others make it their life's work to shut down puppy mills. It's all good and worthwhile.

No one is making any comments about Bertha’s amazing outfits?! She clearly loves wearing them and all the attention she’s getting. Thank you for being so diligent with helping her. Bertha seems like she has a great life!

I see parents feeding their kids all sorts of junk food, candy, soda, chips - you name it - and these kids are TUBS OF LARD, yet Child Protective Services in my area does nothing. Spank your kid, they get involved. Yell at your kid, they get involved. Fatten your kid up to morbidly obese levels, flirting with juvenile diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and resulting behavioural issues - CPS does diddly squat. Things have to change.

She says the dog looked worse than in the photos, implying she had not seen the dog in-person previously. This person took a dog who was obese and helped the dog get healthy. She is a hero to this dog.

Bertha is such a precious baby. It warms my heart to see how her life improved because of her new mom's love and care.

Yeah, my grandmother did this to her little doxen mix. Love her so much, but she just couldn't hold out against those sad, pathetic eyes when she was eating. Just fed the dog from her plate and unfortunately wasn't able to take her on walks, so the little thing just kept gaining weight. She'd even sneak the dog food if she knew we weren't paying attention bc we'd try to stop her lol

It's possible her previous owner was having mental issues, for example, a lot of elderly people in the early stages of dementia end up over-feeding their pets and don't realize what they're doing. It's not intentional - and it can easily get out of hand if someone doesn't realize what's happening and step in and take care of the animal. But often, people with dementia either have few people in their support circle, or the people they do have are exhausted and completely focused on the person and don't have the mental energy to deal with the pets. It's really tragic. The pets suffer terribly (as well as everyone else). But if it was someone who was just over-feeding because they thought it was cute - I fully agree. Really irresponsible and so unfair to the pets.

Love her can-do, loving spirit. This was a long haul, 18 months. Bertha looks so happy. And they are staying together, Perfect!!!

That breaks my heart to see that poor dog looking like that. Thank God you practically saved her life.

Bertha is a little darling. And the other dog on the treadmill was like the supermodel of dogs

I agree it is animal abuse. There was a woman in our neighborhood who went through dogs like water - none lived more than 5 yrs. and all died from complications of morbid obesity. It made me sick and I told her so & she insisted it's "love". Luckily eventually she couldn't adopt any more dogs -

Same applies to humans. People fat-shame pets, and get angry when they find people with obese dogs and see it at cruelty; The moment, you tell people their obesity is unhealthy, they get angry. Madness.

Some just claim to "love" their pets so much. But people need to understand that dogs need to maintain a healthy weight as well as humans.

Loving a dog isn't over feeding them. Love then enough to give them the best diet and exercise. They'll be happier and love you for it.
