    This issue is far more simple than most people try to argue about. The cell phone (or for that matter a computer or some other digital device) has become an extension of us as human beings and warrants to have the same level of security as our minds have. So, the legal answer is: get a warrant, show up at my door and ask for password. BUT, here is the technical side of the argument, which really is the meat of this post: We have to choose between security or insecurity, not just select a degree of security. A crypto-system is either secure or it's not. By building in back doors we create insecure system. Companies should build as secure of a system as they possibly can, while US government should hire the brightest minds it can to crack that security. Any and all security throughout the history of humanity has always been "cowboys and Indians" or "Cat and mouse" game. A crypto-system system can not be considered secure unless it resisted many attacks by skilled attackers over a long period of time. Building in back door inherently undermines what the definition of security is.

  • @ghffrsfygdhfjkjiysdz

    @ghffrsfygdhfjkjiysdz

    8 жыл бұрын

    Lamawalrus Levels of security most certainly exist and the usual way to differentiate them is by the amount of time it would take to break the "locking mechanism", encryption in this case. The problem with adding back doors is that there is no more "breaking" needed to access data, there is no security with back doors. In the past US GVT limited export of encryption algorithms to the weaker ones (56-bit DES) while stronger encryption types were not licensed for export. Now the rest of the world caught up, and everyone has access to strong encryption (triple-DES, AES-256, RSA-4096+) and the new path of building in back doors is not an acceptable path, because it simply is no longer an encryption system, it's just junk.

  • @Lamawalrus

    @Lamawalrus

    8 жыл бұрын

    Igor Petrusky Depends on how much meaning you attribute to the word "backdoor", if it's simply "an alternative means of access beyond the one of the user", then it could have the same level of security (according to your method of differentiation) as the user had, in theory

  • @ghffrsfygdhfjkjiysdz

    @ghffrsfygdhfjkjiysdz

    8 жыл бұрын

    Lamawalrus That would be a "second front door"... Lets say that there is a 2nd password or a key that decrypts the data, there are 3 possibilities: 1. This key is unique for every device. 2. The key is universal. 3. There is a universal way to derive a unique key given a specific device. This 3rd way is similar in security to 2nd way. In the case #2, this is a bad idea, because this 1 key opens every device, it's just like running a big business and having your grandmaster key stolen, now the thief can open any door he wishes without you even knowing about it... Having a huge database of unique 2nd keys is not very practical, but could work. Here the security of the whole system is defined by security of the database, so if every fbi agent has access to it, what is to stop someone from posing a copy of it on a black-hat forums... ANYTIME there is any sort of back-door, there is no more security; just a perception thereof.

    +Ricardo Mazeto I will "do it with arguments" for him. I respect Obama, but he is in over his head. He talks of "compromise", but there is no such thing when you are talking about encryption. It is not physically or mathematically possible to have a secure backdoor. I work in this field and can answer whatever questions you may have. Encryption is math. Even if you completely ignore that point and "ban" math, you still have the issue of creating a backdoor in an algorithm that has to be, by nature, open source. Even if it was not open source, there is no backdoor that can be implemented that cannot be abused by "hackers". It is just not possible. This is similar to whispers in a way. Of course we wish that we could have access to every conversation that happened between "terrorists", but the reality is we cannot. Encryption is the digital equivalence of whispers. It is just not mathematically possible to have an encryption algorithm that the government can eavesdrop on that hackers cannot. If you think I am wrong, then get ready to dig into the research, because I know what I am talking about and to quote yourself, "If you oppose his opinion why don't you do it with arguments and reason"

    Yes they do. Search for the motion filed by federal prosecutors on the web. It's a pdf file. It goes into great details about why it's necessary that Apple create this. Not only for the customers security, but because they need Apple's "signature" in the code for it to work. As well as the OS having to match the ECID to the ECID of the physical phone itself. Which means the OS wouldn't work on any other phone because the ECID didn't match.

    To use his key analogy PROPERLY, what they want is a master key for every lock, while still having the "regular" (personal) key for "normal people". Once you put this master key concept into encryption, the encryption is worthless, anyone can bypass it. There is no such thing as a "key that only a couple people have". As an amateur locksmith (and a professional "IT Guy"), I can assure you this does not exist. Once you create that master key, there is no stopping anyone from getting it, ever. There IS NO MIDDLE GROUND HERE (normally, I argue the solution IS the middle ground, but that just doesn't work in this case. PERIOD.

Compared to them, there are very few people who are anybody at all in this area, but that has nothing to do with anything else, at all. Your claim is little more than an ignorant childish remark, made by an ignorant troll. I am not sure if you were trying to discredit me, to say I don't know what I am talking about, or just because you felt the need for someone to "hear" you over in your little corner so that no-one forgets you are over there, and so they remember why you are being ignored; so a little more clarity with your intent may help to clear up the reason for your meaningless little outburst.

Before someone wants to sell all their stocks, the government knows...a politician creating problems for certain government officials have some personal issues, the officials can use this to stop a revolution before it has even started... Soon the government will become overpowered and corrupted and become the terrorist... If you look back in history, you'll see this bs every single time, government tries to sell "security" for your freedom and becomes overpowered and then corrupted, that's how empires fall... Obama is a cool guy and uses reason to talk to the people, but he doesn't even mention the officials that straight up lied to the public about not monitoring the public, when actually they are even recording most transmissions on the internet in case someday they need it, isn't lying to the public a crime? None of them are held responsible for their acts and that is not right.

  • @keeperkai999

    +Darft Pom how to identify terrorists? Do it the old way. Terrorists are criminals, does monitoring your private chat stop criminals? Hell no, crimes are happening left and right anyways but somehow this warrants the government to go into your house anytime they want? Hell no. Law enforcement deals with criminals, it has nothing to do with law abiding citizens, just like you shouldn't spy on the common folks in the name of "security". You say it like the police can just show up at your door and say I wanna search your house because someone else is stealing, with no reasonable cause and no judge to warrant. The government are people too, just like the police, if you give them this kind of power, they will surely be corrupted. That's why the law requires the police to have reasonable cause and a warrant from of judge to do anything searching, it's to prevent corruption. Somehow when dealing with terrorists it's different? Even in the current law system, with this level of prevention of corruption, we still hear time to time that there are corrupted cops, and now you want to get rid of it entirely and give the free pass to all NSA agents? Sounds smart lol.

They would have to have a warrant for that safe specifically, and they could crack it, but they still could not FORCE YOU to give them that combination. It is the same with encryption, they can trick you, they can crack it (if possible), they can time an "attack" to take your stuff while you have it open (has been done), but they CANNOT MAKE YOU GIVE THEM THE CODE.

    I am curious as to why we can't build a system like you see in movies for giant safes, where there is 2 keys or 4 keys that have to be turned at the same time. So, for a digital thing, we have the system check the IP address, and that is part of it, and have a password. But at the SAME TIME there is 4 other people who have their IPs and passwords. Then, in order to continue to look at the information, you have to, by law, have more than 1 person in the room of the device in question. Like a courtroom or something. So that it can be monitored heavily. The place where the device is, and all the people who have the passwords are separate as well. The people who have the passwords are given the case, and are told to rule on if we need that data or not. However, they will never see that information, as they are separate entities. Though with that I am not sure how they would deem it necessary to do that. That would create a system of check and balances, and would protect privacy as well, at least some. I would like to see something like that built, changed to match what our country needs in terms of safety and security, but that seems to me like it would be a good idea, at least somewhat.

    +k odu Yeah, he is. Usually I would agree with most of the things he says, but in this case I don't think he is fair. There are government officials that straight up lied to the public that they were not being monitored, but the truth is internet transmissions are recorded and stored on a daily basis, and could be accessed any time they wanted, the officials were not held responsible to lying to the public nor even removed from their position. And he even went out to use the "pedophile/child pornagraphy" card, saying it is impossible to find pedophiles without breaking into everyone's privacy. That sounded a bit disgusting to me. As a president, he should know that even when dealing with these criminals, the police needs "reasonable cause" and get a warrant from a judge, but this is not the case for NSA/CIA, they pretty much just do whatever they want, and that is dangerous/would lead to corruption.

    I think that in this situation the problem that people feel is that the government could pick a member of the country, and search his/her whole life, chats, calls etc. and they will surely find a thing to insult the person, or send him to jail. Because nobody is guiltless nowdays... And I wouldnt feel comfortable if I'd watch out for all my chats and calls because maybe a day someone will want to see me in jail.

    My biggest issue with these kind of 'backdoor keys' is that they won't even accomplish the desirable results, they will only open up the undesirable. Why do I say this? Because encryption on the hardware/firmware side that the company puts in, and could thus create a backdoor key for, is only one point of encryption. Software does encryption just as well, and most software is not put on by the manufacturer. Anyone can encrypt basically anything, and no one will have the key but the people who encrypted it. The encrypted portions of the internet are already where the pedophiles communicate, where weapons and drug deals are made, and... oh, right, that's also where your banking happens, and all of your online purchases. Most of the internet is encrypted. That's the world we live in today. No government imposed 'backdoor key' will ever get at what someone wants to hide bad enough.

    It's sad that the Government didn't realize that Apple databases already see every single thing done on iPhones.

    There is a flaw in his analogy with the FBI entering your house. WHY? 1. FBI doesn't have the key to your house..you have to open the door to let them in after they show you the warrant. 2. They're basically asking that a key of your house(iphone) to be handed to them or kept in a secure location for them to take whenever they want and come open your house(iphone).

    +Phil Hassann that's a good point, but only one interpretation of the analogy. You could also say that yes the FBI doesn't have the key to your backdoor, but you do have a backdoor. And that does expose you to burglars and thieves, but you wouldn't get rid of the door because of the possibility that under special circumstances the FBI might search your house.

    This discussion does not take into account the concept of how encryption works. Apple isn't being asked to weaken their encryption. The government wants them to change the phone's operating system so that they can try to "brute force" the 4 digit entry key. There are freely available encryption tools online that are extremely powerful. All this talk about reaching a middle ground with tech companies ignores all that. Also other countries have their own encryption standards. The US does not have a monopoly on this technology. What will the US do about that? This is why PGP was banned in the 90s. The government has been fearing the arrival of freely available and strong public encryption.
