Edward Snowden Interview on Apple vs. FBI, Privacy, the NSA, and More

"There's a very real difference between allegiance to country-allegiance to people-than allegiance to state, which is what nationalism today is really more about," says Edward Snowden. On February 20, the whistleblowing cybersecurity expert addressed a wide range of questions during an in-depth interview with Reason's Nick Gillespie at Liberty Forum, a gathering of the Free State Project (FSP) in Manchester, New Hampshire.
FSP seeks to move 20,000 people over the next five years to New Hampshire, where they will secure "liberty in our lifetime" by affecting the political, economic, and cultural climate of the state. Over 1,900 members have already migrated to the state and their impact is already being felt. Among their achievements to date:
getting 15 of their brethren in the state House, challenging anti-ridehail laws, fighting in court for outre religious liberty, winning legal battles over taping cops, being mocked by Colbert for heroically paying off people's parking meters, hosting cool anything goes festivals for libertarians, nullifying pot juries, and inducing occasional pants-wetting absurd paranoia in local statists.
Snowden's cautionary tale about the the dangers of state surveillance wasn't lost on his audience of libertarians and anarchists who reside in the "Live Free or Die" state. He believes that technology has given rise to unprecedented freedom for individuals around the world-but he says so from an undisclosed location in authoritarian Russia.
And he reminds us that governments also have unprecedented potential to surveil their populations at a moment's notice, without anyone ever realizing what's happening.
"They know more about us than they ever have in the history of the United States," Snowden warns. "They're excusing themselves from accountability to us at the same time they're trying to exert greater power over us."
In the midst of a fiercely contested presidential race, Snowden remains steadfast in his distrust of partisan politics and declined to endorse any particular candidate or party, or even to label his beliefs. "I do see sort of a clear distinction between people who have a larger faith in liberties and rights than they do in states and institutions," he grants. "And this would be sort of the authoritarian/libertarian axis in the traditional sense. And I do think it’s clear that if you believe in the progressive liberal tradition, which is that people should have greater capability to act freely, to make their own choices, to enjoy a better and freer life over the progression of sort of human life, you’re going to be pushing away from that authoritarian axis at all times."
Snowden drews laughs when asked if he was eligible to vote via absentee ballot. "This is still a topic of...active research," he deadpans.
But he stresses that the U.S. government can win back trust and confidence through rigorous accountability to citizens and by living up to the ideals on which the country was founded. "We don’t want Russia or China or North Korea or Iran or France or Germany or Brazil or any other country in the world to hold us up as an example for why we should be narrowing the boundaries of liberty around the world instead of expanding them," says Snowden.

To me he is neither a traitor nor a hero, he is a bit naive to wish that the government plays fair in the information "game", (field=war). There are people out there planning to do harm to the US by hitting the PEOPLE, the average innocent citizen, there are the home grown risk, like Timothy McVeigh and some who have the talent to create cults and to get it's followers to do what he/she wants to. I really don't see any problem in sacrifice my privacy to have these types I've mentioned above, under constant surveillance. Time to grow up guys is not us the good guys against them, the bad ones anymore. In today's world we're all bad guys, so let's pull for the team we're in and above all let's not go around the world advertising the tactics our team use, based on a notion of a false sense of higher ethics and morality.

Mario Treglia sounds good, but you fail to realize that the team you think you are on and pulling for, is treating you like the enemy and will burn you the moment it becomes convenient. Snowden is quite the opposite of naive, as his amazing anticipation of gov't action illustrates. He took a very calculated move to put the ball in the court of the people, fully realizing they would likely fumble as they have, but it was near perfect altruistic play. If we ever step up and act like a nation of people that deserve proper gov't and set the example we often claim to be for the world, then his actions will stand out like a Beacon. This is a far sight better than your resignation to join our mafia and integrate into the corruption that sustains it.

+NOOBKING That's libertarian bollocks. It's just as bad, if not worse, to let economical 'freedom' run rampant. It will _always_ lead to monopolies, and in turn they will _buy_ political power, turning democracies into oligarchies, or worse, into dictatorships. The rich want obedient slaves, the people want the opportunity for a meaningful and free life. It's a natural opposing force that can only be solved with democracy.

He not only understands the hardware, progamming and encryption, he understands the social and political implications and how dangerous these technology are. In my opinion, he should be an advisor to the UNSC in developing international policies and electronic restriction applications that prevent misuse.

I perceive Edward Snowden as highly intelligent and one hell of a hero in our time, without using violence as a means to achieve what he chooses as truth. It's also very interesting to see how Edward is slowly moving forward, beginning to answer questions that are far from the subject of his "coming out" with our private cyberspace invasion proof. To see the projection of people asking questions here, showing a need for a savior. It's always tricky to be in the position where he's in, I think. I hope he knows where to draw the line. I'm not too worried though ;)

Damn this man is well spoken and conversant on a variety of topics. Obviously he finds many things of interest and pursues advanced understanding of those interests to speak so eloquently to the entire topics evolution not just in support of his preferred interpretation. But specifically I feel that his thorough command of those topics concerning privacy, liberty, legality, justice and more we broadly define as freedom--comparing and considering the weight of risk he would be required to take in providing proof crimes had been committed not just accusations they may have, plus the cost of sacrifices that would be required he make in doing so and that he decided himself less important and expendable, contrary to all instincts of self preservation still chose to deny himself the natural and basic desire to act in self interest that is inherent to us all--to deter his goal to obtain and make available to all people was in the best interest of all people is proof that his dilemma was considerable and that his stated beliefs and purposes which motivated him were the greater value and his duty to the unique ability his position provided and by which it was possible for him to do it. I've seen people angry and disbelieving of and denying his generosity because they said he enjoyed the attention or obviously had profited financially and was not the Samaritan he seemed. But no real claims or allusions to that end have been made by the Government, none except perhaps at the very early period when speculation rampant, opinions were stated as if fact by people without clearance nor status to make such claims. And very telling it is that the one entity most benefiting if the claim was made quickly had abandoned the notion of doing it. I am of the theory that accomplishing such a herculean task, and the successful manner in which it was done must feel gratifying. Let us not forget that if as he claims his hope to open a debate and to encourage the peoples interest in and participation in determining the fate of these issues was paramount in the decision process to take the risks and accept sacrifice has in fact been achieved on a scale he doubtful thought was possible would cause the most stoic person beam with pride and feel satisfaction even vindication that doing the right thing was the right thing to do? Hell yeah, it has to be. Who would do what he has done not knowing if it could be done and unsure that the seeds would bear fruit if it was done and uncertain the fruit would be edible and enjoyed by those whom it had been planted for. Near to none, perhaps only one. I could not dare to deny him his relief, his pleasure and satisfaction or any other gains he receives provided they are not carried on the back or paid with blood of the innocent. Now if any who in willful compliance and deliberate defiance to the best interests of the people and the Rights provident in natural law suffer any burdens that is in my opinion justice measured and sentenced. I really won't care and will likely be pleased. Judgement should never be substitute for consideration, rush not toward a guilty verdict and with thoughtful reason hold innocence protected until innocence proved dead, then be certain that all claims hold to truths provided then know the verdict is justified as well as legal--this is Justice worthy of all respectful that all are worthy of Justice or none are.

erintreez him or me? I'm sure there must be a way to propose the question. But whom, how, and whether you'd want to inquire further you should seek to answer direct. It would be reasonable to assume that inquiry's will be noticed, that may be more cumbersome to you than you'd like. Good luck, Thanks for the compliment

ElPocho DelMundo Yes, there is I suspect in all of us an up-welling of self doubt and insecurity when listening to him speak and express not only knowledge of things, but of idealism, belief, confidence, humility, bravery and any other number of descriptors. But he is just a man, another person with the same needs, wants and fears I suspect as any of us. That and an high level understanding of computer engineering. I think an important difference between his seemingly faultless image and our own is the sure knowledge we have that his choices put him at danger and he chose risk vs. security. I presume his certainty was that dangerous knowledge of others choices, he'd been allowed or was unpreventable to access would imprison and destroy him eventually. We all know that as long as we are useful and behave life is smoother but if that changes we become burdened (punished), expendable (threatened), to targeted (attacked) and when the security of those above is at risk it's a thin line of difference. He had no real choice, and as he expressed concerns and that met resistance, the dangers coalesced clearly and focused his reality. Assuming that the narrative is real, and it has passed scrutiny to appear genuine imo. The machinations of the players always start to fail because to many smart thinkers with big egos are involved. It isn't a matter of could or would we do the same as he did. It's would we have concerned ourselves with the knowledge or ignored it existed completely. It's important to note that people opt for the GED for many reasons and as a metric of intelligence is not reliable. That is more of a programmed judgement, than reflective reality. What I believe is more accurate is many who go this route have reason or needs other than school to pursue, and these are not necessarily included in the larger majority whose poor performance in school is due to boredom, the lack of a challenging and stimulating environment, or rebellion to the obey, stay and memorize model of educational advancement. In all I think very few with mental deficiencies or disabilities actually obtain the GED. I could be wrong though.

How does government win back the people’s trust? “Accountability, I mean the whole idea behind the divide and in the simple language of a private citizen and a public official is that we know everything about them and they know nothing about us because they’re invested with powers and privileges that we don’t have. They have the ability sort of direct the future of society and as a result it is incumbent upon them to assume a level of responsibility and accountability to the public for the exercise and abuse of those authorities. It simply does not exist today and that’s the problem.” -Edward Snowden Damn...

I've proposed the following and believe this makes sense: If any 'authority' is privileged to access our private information, the public should require even MORE non-privacy of them. So let us require all politicians and businesses that do these things to have cameras on them 24/7 with complete access to anything and everything (text, emails, etc.) They shouldn't even be allowed to go to the bathroom without us being able to witness everything they do. It is hypocritical of those demanding such powers to say things like, "...well, if you've got nothing to hide..." when this isn't respected in kind. At present, our whole economy is based on offending our private rights more and more to the point that it WILL collapse even what remains valid in our systems because those privileged to access can and will optimize their own interests of unbalanced powers to become inevitably abusive at some point. Take the ubiquitous EULAs that we are all FORCED to accept in all our media these days. They all now reserve a right to state that they can nullify the supposed 'agreements' at any point at any time for any reason and that our 'agreement' imposes on us no right to get justice for any grievances, etc. Whether this is businesses, publicly owned entities, or to governments proper, we now have an ever-increasing uphill battle to compete against those with power over our rights. "Agreements" are NOT agreements in this way because we have no real privilege to options when all are acting in sync to do this. So I also propose an automatic EULA for all people everywhere that requires default to preserve the individual's rights over any interests regardless of 'contract'. As for privacy issues, if 'authorities' are granted privileged access, such information should NEVER be allowed to be used in a court of law, ...only as a potential precursor to investigate further should it be of concerns of serious matters like terrorism.
