Ike wanted a plan. He didn't plan to use it but he was a military man. His warnings to the American public about the military industrial complex on his departure from office before JFK took over showed his true colors. His tenure at the helm can be respected today.

Yes I agree in that , if only US had people of such integrity today. Eisenhower would be very angry to say the least watching this avoidable war in Ukraine. Not to mention all US recent wars.

It was about two days ago, I learned of this man from the (*free with ads) movie that you tube here suggested called: 'Our Nixon'. The historical context impressed upon me is monumental. The film of the interviews and press statements with this man -from the day of the Pentagon papers- are not so absorbing or interesting; as they are profound.

RIP Mr. Ellsberg.

Just pure insanity

In 1991 when the USSR went tits up, the threat of nukes never really went away through the 90s because old Soviet nukes could’ve fallen into the wrong hands. We still had nuclear (capable) bombers flying about in the UK, and a fleet of nuclear subs mooching about. It wasn’t until the 2000s when they scrapped most of this stuff I finally felt safe. Then 9/11 happened!

Trump was probably the least scary President in that regard because he has no real religious beliefs and he only cares about making money. Thermonuclear war would be bad for business. Reagan was far more dangerous and it took them to make _The Day After_ in 1983 for him to confront the horrifying realities of thermonuclear war.
